From Interview:
Smith, from Jackson, Tennessee, has nearly every major program after him, so narrowing his list down to just six schools was a bit of a challenge. He and his father sat down and comprised a plan to help him figure out what schools would be the best suitors.
My dad is a businessman, so he had a spreadsheet for me to narrow it down, he said. We put in boxes with a scale of 1 to 10 with things like a good offensive line coach, a good relationship with the coaches, opportunity to prepare me for the NFL and opportunity to play. We just had our list end evaluations of each school, and whoever was the top six on the list was my top six.
While Smith won't reveal who came out on top within the spreadsheet, the 6-foot-6, 299-pound lineman says that one school was a clear No. 1 after the grading.
Another school came close, but there was a clear No. 1, he said. It was quite shocking because that was one of my top schools, so it was interesting.
I thought it's been said in here that his family members were big UT fans.
Five-star offensive tackle Trey Smith, the No. 3 player in the nation according to 247Sports, announced a top six of Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Clemson, Alabama and Notre Dame on Sunday through ESPN.
Heres what the Jackson, Tenn., product told me earlier in the week about his interest in Tennessee.
Theres no doubt, they want me a lot, Smith said. Coach Jones is a down-to-earth guy and hes doing everything in his power honestly to recruit me. Being that my sister went there, I know Knoxville pretty well.
Smith added that hes close with Volunteer players Jason Robertson and Jack Jones.
I like Tennessee a lot, he said.
As for a final decision, that comes later for Smith, who will be an early-enrollee.
Im going to wait after official visits, said Smith, who added hed probably take all five visits. Right now I can not even name a No. 1 so Ill wait till all my official visits and stuff before I make any rash decisions.
The industry-generated 247Sports Composite has the 6-foot-6, 300-pound Smith as a four-star recruit and the No. 9 OT in the nation (while being a top-50 player), but in the most recent rankings for the class of 2017, I tabbed Smith as the best tackle in the class and a no-doubt top-5 player.
Seriously. Some of you people really need to give up following recruiting. It really isn't for you. Enjoy the summer and come back in the fall when there are games to be watched.
Following recruiting can be a stressful thing if you let it be, but it really isn't much, if any, different than any other year. You get some recruits, you lose some recruits. About the only things different in recruiting is 1) More in-state talent in TN. 2) More media outlets to follow from.
#2 is the one I personally have a problem with, because it has caused a lot of you guys to come out of the woodwork and jump on the recruiting bandwagon without having a clue as to how recruiting works/flows.
I'm glad SOMEONE around here is finally pushing to kick out the people who don't "get it". How would we know that we have been internetting all wrong without you?
So, how do you inform those who make the cut that they are allowed to post or visit the recruiting forum? Secret message? Or is it written in the Recruiting Forum Rulebook that no one knows about?
You may know recruiting but I think the concept of message boards eludes you.
I hope we get Smith. I think we will but, as it has been mentioned by others, it is a long time until February.
If you've ever seen Major League it will be similar to that. Check your locker at the end of the day. If you have a red tag hanging in your locker it means the skipper wants to see you because you just died and got sent back to the FF. It's not fool proof because we don't have lockers or red tags but it's the best system we have right now.
