With one offensive lineman committed for the 2017 class, Tennessee is taking a long and hard look at how they hope to fill out the remaining spots they have penciled in for the line of scrimmage on the offensive side. Huntington, West Virginia's Billy Ross appears to be near the top of the board and he was in town on Wednesday.
"The visit was great," Ross said. "When I got out of the car, the entire coaching staff was there to meet me. I got a lot of attention and they showed me how much they want me in orange. I got to spend a lot of time with coach Mahoney which was important and meet with coach Jones."
Ross visited in early May with his high school head coach, Billy Seals. The former Liberty linebacker is from Morristown and has been a lifelong Tennessee fan. This trip was different as Ross was accompanied by his father.
"He really liked it and he always has something to say about whether he likes it or not," Ross said. "He told me he really likes it. He and coach Mahoney hit if off because they are both big Steelers fans."
So where do things stand for Ross? Things are coming down to the wire for the mountain of a lineman.
"Tennessee and North Carolina are in a tie right now," Ross said. "Florida State is just behind them. I hope to sit down with my family and work my way toward a decision."
No matter which school becomes his pick, Ross plans on at least one more trip.
"I feel like it's more personal face to face," Ross said of how he plans to commit. "I don't like the idea of committing over the phone or in text message. I want to be professional and I think doing it in person is the way to do that. My dad also thinks that way."
Ross told us he hopes to do something in July or at the latest August. We expect things to come to a head within the next two weeks.
