'18 CA CB Olaijah Griffin (USC signee)

The playoff has done what it's supposed to, IMO, it's made sure that the 2 best teams get to compete for #1. The poll system and the BCS didn't always make that happen.

the problem with that is every time they've made a change to get to a true champion, they've changed the method in determining who would qualify.

back in the day, you had the handwringing over #1 because you two polls and bowl deals that would prevent #1 from playing #2.

the thought was #1 and #2 should play, regardless of bowl allegiences.

well, they did that, but then they changed the way we determine #1 and #2 to the BCS formula.

the hand wringing there, you had #3 and #4 sometimes w/in decimal points from #2, and it's not fair.

so they move to a 4 team play off, but they scrap the BCS formula and now have a human committee.

i would argue, that it's not the determination of how the champion is determined, but the methodology used to determine who qualifies that's flawed.

if you took the BCS formula and got your top 4, most years, you wouldn't have any real issues with who was going to play for the title.

similarly, if you go back to the old poll system, most years, who ever ended the season ranked 1 and 2, if they had played, most would have never had an issue with it.

in the end, i like the 4 team play off.

i wouldn't be upset at 6, with 1 and 2 getting a bye.

more than that, and you start getting teams that really shouldn't be there, or simply had their shot and blew it.

just as i stated that it would have helped us in 95, it would have helped FL in 98.

can you imagine the reaction if TN goes undefeated, beats FL for the first time in 6 years, wins the SEC, only to potentially have to play FL again to win a title???

13-1 runner up to the team you beat in September....

same for FL in 95, having to potentially play us again.

GA got some of that this year. won the SEC w/out having to beat Bama in the process. but lost the title to a team that didn't even it's division.

how important is winning the division and conf to Bama this year? meanwhile, Auburn is sitting there, saying "not impressed, we beat you both" whilst hanging their division championship banner...whoopie.:pinch:

6...max. but i'm fine with keeping at 4.

Jake, I agree that 4 teams is enough. You make a good point that the 4 team playoff may be more important than how we pick the 4 -- poll, BCS, or committee.

Arguments are the same as they always were, 1 loss vs. undefeated, who did you play, team with the best season vs. team that's the best at the end of the season.

Biggest problem with the old poll system was not having the best teams head-to-head, often because of the bowl deals you mention. Best example I remember is that you couldn't get a top-ranked Big 10 champ to play anyone but the PAC champ, because of the Rose Bowl.

Not what I wanted to hear tonight, but hearing he’s going to be at USC. Pretty much what I stated previously about family and friend pressure and being close to home.

If you’re right, you’ll be credited with “good guess”. If you’re wrong? The fun and legends and stuff gets started.

I hope the kid comes to UT, but in all honestly.. This feels like Adoree Jackson all over again.

It’s alright if we don’t get him . Because we might get woodi Washington who might end up being a 5 Star CB next year .

I would’ve guess this as well but when I hear something from connected people, I will say so but you hear so much on every player and nothing that couldn’t be picked up around here. I know who GFW is but don’t think you are anyone like him. Know who D1 is but don’t think you are anyone except someone who wants this board to think you are something more than what you are. If you had told us about Copeland before Simmons did, then maybe I would be impressed but hearing this cat is staying close to home could’ve been picked up by again, just reading VN.

Eight teams, no bye weeks. Allows a slightly bigger field. Eight to four to two to one. But I like the idea of using the old BCS ranking system to seed teams. Takes out the human factor to a degree.

Did OG personally tell you this? If not, I'll hold out hope for now.

I heard he was coming to TN bc his uncle was able to bring up some Old Plantation BBQ with him from Chattanooga when OG came for his visit.

You mean his family in Chattanooga doesn’t have any influence over his decision? I thought an uncle in a family had a big say so in things?? One would believe he loves his family in Chatt.

I’ve been pretty transparent about who I am and my connection to UT. Additionally, it’s idiotic to pretend to be “something more” on a message board, as you so eloquent stated. What would I have to gain from that. Would also be a pretty pathetic representation of my life, if that was the case. In fact I’ve commented on ~6 recruits (not the every player you so ignorantly want to claim), with pretty reliable information. Also commented on the QB situation because of what was told to me about transfers during a conversation about JT. You want to highlight Copelan (and I’m not really sure what you are referring to) but ignore my comments about Caleb or the transfers or whatever else. Sounds fair.

Like I’ve said over and over, my family is connected directly to Tennessee since most graduated from UT, but I am not and I did not attend UT. I happen to be connected to people in recruiting through my career and my college experience that share information with me.
