'18 CA QB Adrian Martinez

Sounds like the kid wants to make the right decision. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

We need a QB who makes quick decisions.

Kidding of course. This is a lot bigger decision for him than it is for us. I'm glad he is taking his time, which means he is less apt to change his mind later.

Sounds like the coaching staff did a terrific job juggling Penix and Martinez this weekend. Hosting two players at one position and keeping them both happy is a very difficult thing to do.

"Martinez did not commit to the Vols during his visit, but sources close to his recruitment indicated that the Vols are cautiously optimistic about their chances of landing him coming out of the weekend. The biggest concern for Martinez in regard to Tennessee appears to be the distance from home."

Absolute must get. QB is a huge need plus a big name prospect like this would do wonders with other offensive prospects we are recruiting.

I wonder how it goes down when a coaching staff tells one recruit 'you're our #1 guy', while signing another guy at the same position that weekend. Like, does Penix read/hear those words and feel slighted? Are coaching staffs upfront about their QB board? Etc...

If they told Martinez they're taking 2 QBs they told Penix they're taking 2 QBs

No I get that... but I'm saying you tell one kid he's your #1, do you tell the other kid "Hey, we really like you but were more interested in this other guy."

I've just noticed a lot of recruits talk about how they like how coaches tell them they're needed, etc. Wondering if a recruit (Martinez in this case) saying he was told he's the #1, would cause another player (Penix in this case) to feel slighted or de-commit if Martinez signed.

Not a perfect analogy but think of the scene in Something About Mary where in the beginning he asks some girl to the prom and she says "I'm really hoping ______ asks me, but if he doesn't then maybe I'll go with you."

I would imagine Penix is confident but knows he's not polished at QB. I would think the staff was upfront with him in how they could help him improve. They would have told both they are taking two, and Penix would likely know he isn't their top target, although they're happy to get him.

OK I gotcha. My thinking is that if report are correct then he loves UT enough that it doesn't matter if he's #1 as long as he has a spot and is willing to battle for it

More than likely you tell them they can come in and compete from day one. You tell them the best player will start and put the ball in their court to show up and be the best. The kids who respond to that are the ones you want. The kids who shy away and want to be the only player in a class at a position just don't have the competitive drive you want in a D1 athlete.

Right, and possibly told Penix they would like to RS him.

Since the distance is one of his major concerns if not his biggest, I wonder if he would talk with Ainge or Clausen? They could give insight about making the move, maybe..

That's a great point. There is a difference in a top QB and a player with potential to be a top QB.

The staff will tell who's their #1, and at the same time express their interest to others with the opportunity to compete for the job. Neither QB is agraid of competition and if they are, Tennessee isnt the program for them.
