'18 CA QB Adrian Martinez

"Been at Rivals camp and on road all day, but caught up with the Cal quarterback commit a short while ago.

He left Knox around 9-10 this morning. Despite scuttle otherwise, he has not committed to Tennessee. He had an outstanding visit, almost information overload with everything thrown at him. He had some good, candid convos with the coaches about spots and the Penix commitment. Martinez will give the trip some time to marinate and talk to some folks close to him before making any final decision one way or another. Full story in a.m."

That's excellent.

"Tennessee coaches are out on the road tonight and will hit the ground running in the morning.

Mike Canales is in Dallas and will check in with Mayden and MJ Rivers. After that, he will head west."

- Price

Sounds like Martinez and his family might be seeing Canales again very soon.

The Top247 junior quarterback from Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., said Sunday that he’s strongly considering Tennessee after “a really, really good trip” to Knoxville on Friday and Saturday, and he’s likely “one to two weeks away” from deciding whether to stick with his commitment to the Golden Bears.

“We knew going into that we needed to see everything that Tennessee had to offer, and they really came full force and showed it to us,” said Martinez, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 173 overall prospect and No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite for the 2018 class.

“It was real good. There was an academic plan laid out. We got to meet with academic advisors. Obviously, we met all the coaches. We got to kind of see how life would be like if I were to go to school there. It was real good. I had a really good time.”

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Martinez said the Vols “made it clear to me that I was their number-one guy going into the weekend,” and they “showed it through their actions,” including the way they handled three-star quarterback Michael Penix of Tampa, Fla., committing to Tennessee on Saturday during his visit for the Vols’ spring game.

Martinez said Tennessee coach Butch Jones and his staff, including quarterbacks coach Mike Canales, told him that they’re looking to sign two quarterbacks in the 2018 class.

“Really, my perspective on it is that there’s going to be competition no matter where I go,” Martinez said. “And I think the mindset I have to have is that it would just be more guy that I would have to beat out. I told Coach Jones that and I told (offensive coordinator Larry) Scott that, and Coach Canales, and they absolutely love that mentality. That’s kind of the way I would look at it.

“It really doesn’t affect my decision all too much. The good feeling I had about it is the fact that they kind of came about it so honestly, which is huge for my dad and I. They were honest about the whole thing from the very beginning.”

Article also discusses that he has family in Alpharetta and that he is looking to make a decision in the next week or 2 and shut everything down.

Missed the boat? This kid and his father just literally flew from California to Knoxville for two days and then flew back to California today. How is that missing the boat?

Jeez Ron..It was just an opinion. Hell..I hope we get him. I'll be glad to eat crow...I've developed quite the taste for it.

LOL...who could you possibly be talking about???

I'm not really against taking that other player as a second QB option, he has a lot of potential, and he may improve a ton this year. The reservations regarding him by some of us are legitimate however. I'm not meaning to bash him. Just a little uneasy about him.

It was Dorian Thompson-Robinson and he committed to UCLA not Cal. He tweeted "California, I am your quarterback" and I misunderstood it.

Correction, it says "University of Californina, Los Angelas, I am your quarterback." So I butchered it all up.

Yes, I have been drinking. :hi:

No, I get it. I feel the same way and have similar reservations. I don't think any of us should be comfortable right now with Penix as our only QB in this class. He seems very developmental at this point, and it's a little disappointing on the surface to go from Lawrence/Jones/Fields to a guy who may need three years to develop into a quality starter.

I just thought it was funny that you went to great lengths to not mention him by name, though it was painfully obvious who you were talking about.

I just don't like criticizing commits, but we are here to discuss these things, so I was just trying to be honest without bashing a Vol. I like the idea of getting both. Penix has a ton of potential.

“Going in I had a lot of questions I wanted to ask,” Martinez told Volquest, as the California duel-threat quarterback made his inaugural trip to Rocky Top on Friday with his father Tony. “I needed to see how things were in Knoxville. Obviously, all those things were shown to me. I wanted to see how their offense would fit, how’d they’d use me and how’d I’d fit into the puzzle. I wanted insight on how coach (Butch) Jones did things, get feedback from players on coach (Mike) Canales. And I got all those things answered. “They had hyped up the trip and it’s safe to say it definitely lived up to the hype.”

The visit had “an interesting” moment when Tampa Bay Tech quarterback Mike Penix committed the Vols on Saturday, but some candid conversations with Tennessee’s staff reassured Martinez and didn't put a sour note on the trip.

“They told me several times throughout me being there that they want me there and they want me to know that I was their No. 1 guy — regardless if they took another guy,” Martinez explained. “That was kind of an interesting situation. They knew that he wanted to commit ahead of time, and I wasn't ready to make (that decision).”

Sometime in the next week or two, Martinez, along with his family and support group, will finalize his college choice. Taking a mature and steady approach, the 2018 prospect didn't want to make an emotional decision fresh off a "great visit." Martinez will let the trip marinate a bit and weigh the various pros and cons before deciding where he wants to play college ball … either at Cal, Tennessee, Arizona State or elsewhere.

“It was huge that I came and made the visit. I needed to know what the school was like. You can talk to them on the phone for a while. You can get texts, but to see it, get a feel for it. That’s what I set out to do,” he said. “I want to talk with some people that I respect and value their options and give it some time to make a final decision one way or another.”

Sounds like the kid wants to make the right decision. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

Agree. It also sounds like this trip was a fact-finding mission of sorts. Almost as if he had his mind made up on Tennessee if the visit met his expectations and his questions were answered to his satisfaction.

Maybe it's the way the questions were framed to him, but he just doesn't sound like a kid who is dead set on going to Cal. In fact, it sounds very much like the opposite.
