The Top247 junior quarterback from Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif., said Sunday that hes strongly considering Tennessee after a really, really good trip to Knoxville on Friday and Saturday, and hes likely one to two weeks away from deciding whether to stick with his commitment to the Golden Bears.
We knew going into that we needed to see everything that Tennessee had to offer, and they really came full force and showed it to us, said Martinez, whos ranked the nations No. 173 overall prospect and No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite for the 2018 class.
It was real good. There was an academic plan laid out. We got to meet with academic advisors. Obviously, we met all the coaches. We got to kind of see how life would be like if I were to go to school there. It was real good. I had a really good time.
The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Martinez said the Vols made it clear to me that I was their number-one guy going into the weekend, and they showed it through their actions, including the way they handled three-star quarterback Michael Penix of Tampa, Fla., committing to Tennessee on Saturday during his visit for the Vols spring game.
Martinez said Tennessee coach Butch Jones and his staff, including quarterbacks coach Mike Canales, told him that theyre looking to sign two quarterbacks in the 2018 class.
Really, my perspective on it is that theres going to be competition no matter where I go, Martinez said. And I think the mindset I have to have is that it would just be more guy that I would have to beat out. I told Coach Jones that and I told (offensive coordinator Larry) Scott that, and Coach Canales, and they absolutely love that mentality. Thats kind of the way I would look at it.
It really doesnt affect my decision all too much. The good feeling I had about it is the fact that they kind of came about it so honestly, which is huge for my dad and I. They were honest about the whole thing from the very beginning.
