11 wins in 13 starts, right? If JG had that record hed be anointed GOAT by Vol fans.
I tend to think of it slightly differently...
If JG can't step up and beat out Chryst despite having a months long head start, then JG will never be the dude at QB for us anyway and he might as well find his next team.
You don't know that. Maybe he needs more development and to be retaught how to properly play the position. These kids aren't robots. Cedric Tillman.
Weve seen Riley Ferguson and Nathan Peterman able to put up #s but none of the QBs excluding Dobbs legs were able to do anything under butch.
CBJ stunted the growth of QBs and WRs and its pretty clear. Reserving judgement on JG bc of that. But he is one tough dude, nobody can take that away from him.
Additional thoughts on the QB controversy:
My only issue with Guarantano is he strikes me as being too emotional and not in the best way. Other than that I figure hes probably a pretty awesome kid but if things dont go his way my sense is that he reacts with way too much immaturity for someone in a key leadership position. I have some experience with this so Im not totally making this up. I took note of Pruitts comments on body language during the spring but obviously he didnt single anyone out. He was talking about a great many players on our roster - though, I got the idea, not everyone.
As weve all come to know in the last week or so we have Senator Palpatine, now Emperor Palpatine, as our head football coach. What were looking for in our quarterback is Darth Vader. Look, all that stuff in the movies about Luke Skywalker and the rebels winning is FAKE NEWS. It never happened. Everyone knows that people in that camp are spoiled, soft, and wimpy and are no match for the power of the Dark Side. The Emperor has stated that he wants a program where nobody wants to play against Tennessee (a.k.a. the Empire). That means we need Lord Vader leading our football team. The most pressing question I think we face heading into fall camp is can Guarantano be turned to the dark side. If so, then well be in perfect position for the Empire to strike back. Jmo.
Think about it. The quarterback at Tennessee has to face Alabama and perhaps one of the greatest masters of all time, the Yoda of college football coaches. (You know this is an apt description because Yoda and Saban are about the same height).
I was thinking about going with Terminator 3 where in the mausoleum scene Schwarzenegger lifts John Connor up by his throat just to make him angry. Anger, he said, is more useful than despair.
CowboysQuarterbacks dont cry.
You get the idea.
No excuses.
Let the hate flow through you. Good. Good.
In all seriousness, I think Guarantano is overwhelmingly our best option if he can be turned. And if he cannot be turned, then He.Will.Transfer. Jmo
I somewhat doubt that this issue is going to be resolved based primarily on skill sets or historical stats. I think its going to come down to which one of our guys can provide the best competitive leadership for the type of football team that the staff wants to put on the field and for that I think Guarantano needs to embrace the power of the Dark side. jmo.
Pretty much nothing went JG's way last season in any game, yet the only game he supposedly acted with any immaturity was the opener against GT, and I suspect that if Butch had allowed his back up QBs to be more involved in the game, sending signals, holding clipboards, etc., rather than just sitting in the bench, he would have not have been left alone with his thoughts.
You may be right, but I didn't see any real evidence of it last season when there were plenty of opportunities in literally every single game for him to lose his shat. He actually seemed to do a good job of maintaining his composure in some very difficult situations. I don't question his mental toughness, just his ability to quickly process what he sees from the defense, which I am hoping Helton can correct.
The one ting we do know is that KC lost the starting job during the season at Stanford. I have seen nothing that tells me he will be the starter this Fall. Fall practice will be interesting this year.

I think JG is very intelligent. I think he is very tough physically and I think he has the best skill set among our candidates. Honestly, I'm not sure about the mental edge for leadership. Of course he was young and hadn't been in the fire before last year. There's almost always going to be adeversity and even horrible circumstances. In this video Pruitt addresses the body language issue starting at the 5:00 minute mark. (Note: The GT episode was one example. I though his display of dejection after the SC loss was another. Just how I saw it. I just don't think you can afford that if you are the leader. Its not about you and how you feel. Its about the team you are leading. Set an example. Anger would have been better imo. Never give up, never surrender. There are people following you. You're the leader. Its a long season. Keep your chin up and keep keeping on. jmo.)
