'18 GA QB Justin Fields

who’s ranked the nation’s No. 407 overall prospect and No. 15 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite for the 2018 class.

That's an awful low ranking for a kid that can throw the ball like he can. I'm sure he'll get a pretty big bump after this season or before from 247 Sports.

"There are parts of the football facility that I had no idea existed, such as the media center," Fields said. "It was the bomb. We made some really cool videos in there." Along with being a standout player on the gridiron, Fields is a top-flight player on the baseball diamond as well. So, when he learned there could be an opportunity for him to continue his baseball career while playing football at Tennessee it made him excited.

"I learned that the coaching staff will allow me to play baseball if I desire to do so," Fields said. "I'm a football player and prefer to play football. That's my heart. I do like playing baseball as well, though, and I'm pretty good at it. I'm not completely sure I'll be ready to give baseball up when high school is over. But, I might be ready to give it up. It's good to have that option if I'm not."

With a top four of Tennessee, Northwestern, Penn State and North Carolina, it's clear academics are a priority to Fields. It's why he spent more time in the Thornton Academic Center than almost any other place on campus during his visit.

"My parents and I believe in the importance of academics. I make pretty good grades in school," Fields said. "When the ball goes flat, which it will sooner or later, and I can't play anymore, I still would like to have some great life options. I wanted to get a feel for the academic structure and how important it was to the Tennessee football family for student athletes to get a great education."

Back to this past weekend's visitors and 2018 quarterback Justin Fields. After talking to him we certainly believe he was very impressed with Tennessee and what it had to offer both on the field and off the field.

The key here may be academics. Fields and his family maintain that's a high priority and it's why they spent so much time in the Thornton Center Sunday. The Vols are going up against reputable academic institutions like Penn State, North Carolina and Northwestern and they will to sell the success of student athletes under Butch Jones and Dr. Joe Scogin.

But, Fields has plans to travel to Penn State and Northwestern over the next two weeks before returning to Knoxville for the Ohio game. He told Ryan Snyder of our Penn State site Thursday that he could make a decision around Sept. 20-25.

He also said he could make a trip to North Carolina and push that decision date back just a week or two. But, it's worth nothing the Tar Heels already have a quarterback commitment in 2018.
