In a span of about 24 hours, the Vols landed two talents from the Peach State, as Anthony Grant committed to Tennessee one day after Lyn-J Dixon joined the class. The 3-star tailback picked the Vols over finalists Florida, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and N.C. State. “Every time I go up there it feels more and more like I’m at home," Grant said. "I’m so excited. I’m pumped. Tennessee has always been so good to me."

The Buford (Ga.) product held more than 20 offers, but the 5-foot-11, 180-pound tailback has been infatuated with Tennessee ever since earning a scholarship in February. Grant visited Tennessee for a Junior Day quickly after netting an offer and then again for 'Orange Carpet Day' last weekend. He has a real comfort level with the entire staff, especially cornerbacks coach Charlton Warren, who was key in his recruitment for UT, and tailbacks coach Robert Gillespie.

"The people that surround Tennessee football are great," he said. "Coach G, every time I go up there we have a better and better relationship. I knew Tennessee was the right fit for me, so I pulled the trigger."

Grant said he made his decision on Saturday night. He watched Dixon commit to the Vols and then when he evaluated his options, Tennessee kept coming up aces. "Last night, I was sitting there and just trying to evaluate everything," he said. "I was like in my head plotting out stuff and Tennessee fit and checked everything that I was looking for."

Grant believes he’ll fit in seamlessly with the Vols’ spread offense and is stoked to play alongside Dixon and create a 1-2 punch for Tennessee's future offense.

"I feel like I can do it all. I’m an every down ‘back," he said. "Ican also catch the ball in the backfield. I can do a lot of things. ... It’s going to be great playing (with Dixon). We’ve built a great relationship. We get along really good. I feel like it’s going to be fun and exciting to be in the same backfield as him."

GRANT’S SCOUTING REPORT

“Grant is a very good athlete. He makes as many plays on defense, if not more, than he does on offense. As a running back, he is a slasher with good speed on the perimeter and he makes sharp, quick cuts.

"He has good ball skills and his toughness shows on the football field. He splits carries with at least one, sometimes two backs, so his stats will not be huge, but he is a smart runner who is productive. He plays at one of the top high schools in the country, so he will come out of high school prepared to play college football.”

HOW DOES GRANT FIT IN WITH THE VOLS?

Depending on how the 2017 season shakes out, Grant could walk into a rather open depth chart at Tennessee. John Kelly could bolt to the NFL, while Tim Jordan, Trey Coleman and Carlin Fils-aime are largely unknowns at this point. Ty Chandler is expected to be a future ‘bellcow back for the Vols, but there’s certainly an opportunity for carries elsewhere. Grant has spent half his time playing linebacker and doesn’t have a ton of miles on his tires playing sharing carries with Christian Turner at Buford.

While he continues to learn the nuances of the tailback position, he’s a solid fit for Tennessee’s spread offense. Trey Coleman has some natural power, but Grant offers a bit more explosiveness as a more versatile, slashing runner. Grant is also a very good, dynamic receiver out of the backfield, another attribute which could help him see the field early.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TENNESSEE?

Tennessee targeted Grant for months, and once Master Teague went off the board, the Vols hoped to pair Grant with fellow Peach State playmaker Lyn-J Dixon. Donezo. The two Georgia tailbacks discussed playing together in college and made it a reality in a 24-hour span. .

The Vols will continue to evaluate Devon Lawrence, Jahmir Smith, Demarcus Townsend and others, but they're very likely done at the position for the 2018 class.
