'18 GA RB Lyn-J Dixon (Tennessee transfer)

Do we need 5 RBs? I know it’s not ideal, but if Sampson and William me provide depth to Small and Weight, we’re fine. And if one or both of the freshmen surpass Wright, even better.

If the best of the two are just as good as Wright last year, we will probably have a worst backfield than last year.
Sampson and JWT are both more polished than Wright was last year… Wright missed his senior season due to Covid if I’m not mistaken… Sampson is his schools all time leading rusher and has elite game breaking speed… he will be very solid for us this year if he is able to stay healthy. Both freshman have done a good job of staying healthy all camp and making the most of the added reps… I’d like to have 1 more but I am confident in our 4 backs to have a good season behind a very seasoned OL.

Look at every schools depth chart in the SEC. We are the only school in the SEC east that will be forced to rely on freshman at the start of the season. It's unusual to have only 2 returning running backs on a 85 person roster.

A) Relying on freshmen as 3rd and 4th stringers is fine. When has Tennessee ever gotten down to using a 5th string RB in a time that mattered?

B) Not all freshmen are created equally. In 1991, Tennessee opened the season on a Thursday night against Louisville and relied on 2 true freshmen who each rushed for over 100 yards. Their names were Stewart and Hayden. And that was a good Tennessee team. The next RB in line that year was Tavio Henson, who later moved to DB. After that was a TB/FB hybrid named Mose Phillips. He was a RS Freshman.

If Sampson and Williams are ready to just be 3rd/4th string, this loss doesn’t matter. Hell, it doesn’t sound like he was gonna be higher than 5th string anyway.

The problem is they’re both unproven freshmen. We will absolutely need all 4 this year, and probably use a walk on as well

I'd like to have at least 6 scholarship running backs but that's not the case. We played Marcus Pierce last year and he played fairly good considering he was a walk on. So who's our walk on running backs this season? We may need them.

Any thoughts on who may be an emergency play there and does this change their thoughts in recruiting another back
On specifics:
As I told someone in a PM…some things just don’t need to find their way to this message board. I try to show the same respect to everyone in terms of privacy on certain things. If that isn’t good enough then oh well….I try to do right by everyone involved.
