Interview with a psu guy after taking DL MVP in NJ
http://www.scout.com/college/penn-s...7-p-j-mustipher-s-interview-on-psu-gets-crazy
Didn't say they would all be on the field at the same time.
Meant you could have two sets of elite level DTs rotate throughout the game so that all 4 are fresh and destroying the opponent OL all game and especially in the 4th quarter. :hi:
If you take 4 every year that adds up to more than 2 sets. Covering Wrs was somewhat of a joke but if you have 8 more outside your 2 sets they may get a chance if a DB goes out.
That's assuming you don't have early departures every year.
When you get an elite DL/DE/DT to commit, you are thankful.
You never ever say no to elite DL.
If 4 want to be Vols this year, you take all 4.
Only 3 of these 4 are true DTs. The 4th is likely a DE.
By the way, if you have 3 sets of elite DTs (6 total), then you rotate 3 sets. Always full speed when they are in. Increased ferocity. Decreased injury risk because they aren't tired. There is no downside. Unless you are the opposing OL.
85 scholarship players.
22 1st string
22 2nd string
22 3rd string
Leaves you 19 players. 1 LS, 1 punter, 1kicker, 1 backup kicker.
Stil leaves you 15 players. 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 TE,
4 DTs, 4 DEs, leaves you 4 more spots.
That gives you 10 DTs and 10 DEs.
Not 4 every year, but there will not be 4 elite DTs every year that want to be part of Tennessee. Takes em when you can gets em.
I am finished here. (I would take linemen for the last 4 spots too).

You need more than 1 punter and 1 kicker on scholarship, but other than that, I agree with your reasoning!
I gave a backup punter/kicker....
Plus there were 4 spots left. I said that I would fill them with linemen. Could be a kicker in there. When Fuad was kicking for Tennessee, no other kicker took the field. There was only one punter too. One of the QBs was the pooch punter. No wasted spots.
Having 3 deep at every position puts you over 22. For instance, does your 3 deep offense run a traditional format? What about 2 TE sets, 2 RB sets, or 4 WR sets? On defense, are you running 2 LBs and a NB or 3 LBs?
In 22: 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 TE, 1 C, 2 OT, 2 OG 3 WRs
2 DTs, 2 DEs, 3 LBs, 2 CBs 2 Safeties..
You can easily shift a position with the 2nd string or the 3rd string. Doesn't go over 22 at all.
So you think 6 CBs is enough to field 3 positions? 4 RBs is too low also. 9 WRs doesn't allow for any injuries, transfers, busts. I'm all for a few extra on the DL, but it's not as simple as you're making it out to be IMO. 16 on the DL is 4 deep at every position but still allows cushion elsewhere. 14 to 16 is ideal. Anymore, and you have too many guys that aren't getting playing time and will leave anyway.

Agree......works well for bama....elite dlines that can be rotate with no drop off are very hard to maintain a high level of physicality they just wear you down over course of the game
