'18 NY RB Ramon Jefferson (Sam Houston State transfer)

Well it just feels like it's taken a lot of work to land most of these transfers. We've also missed on a few. Then you see the Ole Miss' of the world just have no problem landing everybody they want.

If we land this guy I think it'll make it a pretty good haul, but I don't think it's crazy to say that we probably haven't done as well in the portal as we wanted to.

man i think we're pretty stocked on offense.

our biggest issue has been landing juco or any meaningful transfer defensive player. truth is it may just not have been a good year transfer wise defensively.

they also had alot more glaring holes in their roster than we did after last season ended.

We have done well on offense.

Adding Bru and Mincey helps a lot.

I do think we could really use a guy like Ramon at RB and another tackle.

Even on offense we still missed on Neyor and Robinson.

Defense had a pretty meh haul.

Missed on everyone but Walker and Turrentine on defense.

I'm sure we would have done better if it weren't for the scholarship reductions.

The truth is self-imposed sanctions (which were necessary if they work) hindered us at the semester, which is when most of the talent hit the portal. By the time we had room, most of those players had a home. There was no great influx of talent after Spring. Another OL would be nice, but even without that, I think we're okay on offense. We have weapons. I really wanted more defense, but apparently, it just isn't there in the portal. I could see our defense struggling again this year. Hopefully they make a Year 2 leap. We'll see.

We missed on a couple of defensive ends we wanted to compete for playing time with established and experienced talent already on the roster I wouldn’t say those are big losses and there wasn’t a single linebacker worthy of taking this year from the portal, getting the secondary help was huge for us

The last thing was AP saying he could see him ending up here.

Which I guess still means we are most likely to suit him up this year, because no one else appears to be after him.

Who knows. Every potential transfer is a headache to land for us for some reason.

Because we are not guaranteeing starter reps to kids which we shouldn’t in most cases. We want people to compete and be part of rotation. Most in portal are in it for playing time or money

If we get Jefferson, we filled every need in the transfer portal except Edge. Missing on Verse sucked. But maybe we'll still land one. From the portal, I wanted Safetys (got 2) an Edge (none so far), and another big time WR (got Bru). RB was a minor need, but Jefferson would be a nice add.

On the other hand, it seems like they've been picky with Edge rushers, so the optimistic side of me says they like the development of the guys they have.

I think we would have gotten a true corner and a linebacker too if we had the schollies available early on.

As far as edge goes I feel pretty great about Byron Young, Baron and Roman Harrison.

Another guy who is suppose to be good at rushing the passer is William Mohan. Haven't heard any buzz about him

I think it's because Spyre is going to spend money, but they are not going to overpay.

That's exactly what it is.

We have reached out to plenty of guys that have hit the portal, we've hosted some, we've negotiated in some cases. I think that the staff has a number in mind for certain players or positions, and the market is driving up the value of guys that usually wouldn't move the needle. Scarcity is always going to be a factor in any market, and these players (either strategically or by dumb luck) have made themselves available at a time when there aren't a lot of options or an oversaturated market of highly available, highly skilled players. The end result is that you have big programs with their new NIL program (read: toy) that they want to use, desperate staffs, or guys like Kiffin that confuse "would be nice to have" with "need to have."

I don't have a problem with the way that this staff has handled the portal. Admittedly, I thought that we would have snatched up more too (Summer of the Vols), but I understand why they aren't just paying anybody anything. The portal market is in a frenzy right now, and for better or for worse, we have decided that we aren't going to match some of these offers. I'm ok with that.

I don't know if we could have done anything about Neyor once Texas went all-in. Losing that DE from Albany was a bummer as well. I'd like to hear the post-mortem on that recruitment, as I wonder if we would have put together a more significant offer to get the DE.

Robinson, I truly believe, could have been ours if we really wanted him. Nobody knew him as a player better than Heupel. He was fine letting Miami run his value up, and he was obviously fine letting Kiffin land him. We could have blown everyone out if we thought he was a must-have IMO. The thing with Kiffin is that he is the type to confuse "Hey that (object) would be fun to have, everyone else seems to value it" with "I have to have that (object)." Fine, it's yours.

Another thing to consider is that the NCAA is about to drop the 25 man initial counter rule which means we would only manage to the 85 roster limit.

Which means potentially needing to limit the value of NIL spending to account for oversigning trends that are going to happen as soon as this recruiting cycle. More bodies to spread the same funds around on.

He may not, but we need to get back to the level of having the luxury of Redshirting our freshmen, instead of having to plug them in our starting lineup every season!
Only danger is that if you do not play them then they will transfer. Every player thinks they are the best. Even terrible players think they should play.
I attended a game of a coach I know at a P5 school. After game a dad of a player was complaining to his friend about how stupid the coaches of the school were for not playing his son. The son came out to meet them and complained about not playing.
I asked my friend about the player and he told me that the school had taken the players commitment prior to his senior year. The player had a terrible senior year yet the school still honored scholarship (several on staff wanted to git shirt him). School honored commitment. The player is late for meetings, late to practice and is a cancer. He is a DL and the OL abuses him in practice, yet he still thinks he deserves playing time.
Ideally redshirting and developing would be nice, but transfer portal has really hurt that aspect of coaching and roster management.
