Dorian Gerald is one of the top junior college prospects in the country, and the defensive end recently narrowed his extensive offer list down to five schools. He probably should’ve just tweeted a Top 2, though. The College of Canyons (Calif.) standout admits he could commit “at anytime,” and either Tennessee or South Carolina stand as his likeliest college choice. The Florence, S.C. native visited both schools in early June, taking his grandmother to Columbia before bringing his entire family to Knoxville. Both schools offer exactly what Gerald is seeking at the next level, too: opportunity and fit.
“The Tennessee that visit was perfect. They treated me, my family great,” he said. “Now, I will say, it was different. When I went to Carolina, only just me and my grandmother went. When I went to Tennessee, everyone went. It was just, they treated my family so well. They showed us everything and they just made us — not only me — but my brother, my dad, everyone feel like it was home. That’s big to me. My family is everything to me. My family is the reason why I’m doing this anyway.
“If my parents can feel that much more comfortable leaving me here, that means a lot. I trust my mother, my dad and my grandmother 100 percent, without a doubt. There’s been many times I thought I was right and it ended up that they were right. They adults were right, so if they’re comfortable, and they feel the coaches are genuine then I’m not going to disagree because I’ve been in too many situations where they were right and I was wrong. So I trust them 100 percent. Like I said, (Tennessee) made me feel like I was right back at home.”
That’s good news for the Vols, and so is this: Among all coaches, Walt Wells has made the closest connection with Gerald. When the defensive end outlined his Top 5, he named a number of coaches with whom he'd developed strong relationships with. Naturally, the follow up question was who stands out amongst the pack?
With the infection on his voice changing, Gerald said, “That’s real hard. Real hard, but No. 1, no doubt, would be coach (Walt) Wells. Coach Wells, he’s definitely my top guy. He’s a great guy. I can’t even describe it. He’s been so real with me since Day 1. Honest. He was the one who actually offered me, and he hasn’t backed down since then. Not since Day 1. “He hasn’t changed on me at all. Even when I was there, nothing changed. It was the same coach Wells I was talking to on the phone. It was the same coach Wells I was texting. Coach Wells, I’ve built the biggest relationship with. He’s No. 1. No doubt.”
Now the question is, will Tennessee be No. 1 for Gerald, too? We should know fairly soon.
