'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

You all are crazy. Our guys in the front 7 are absolutely 4-2/3 guys. We only have a handful that could legit play in a 3-4. Kmac only nose tackle. Bituli only linebacker big enough. DEs way too small.

NT- KMac, Crosby
DE- Tuttle, Phillips, Kongbo, A Johnson, Butler, Bennett,

OLB- Taylor, D Johnson, A Smith

ILB- Bituli, Kirkland, Ignont

Tweeners- Thaxton, Reid, Sapp, Page, Gray

New guys

Emerson DE
Lawless DE
Litaker NT?

Who am I missing?

Edit* Picou is who I missed - DE and Blakely - OLB?

If we can keep Dorian Gerald I could see him being a strong side OLB

We don't have a roster that is "built for a 3-4" but we have way more pieces than you give credit. Especially on DL. Our LB corp is where we lack enough 3-4 OLB.

Disagree with you, Reggie Ragland is currently 250+, but was 220 when he beat out Reuben Foster. Shaun Hamilton was similar weight and is currently 230...which is the same tonnage Rashaan Evans and Ben Davis sport. Kirkland and Ignont are tight there and I wouldn’t doubt Sapp and Reid are there by Spring. Our current 4-2-5 DE’s are prototype 3-4 OLB size. Crosby was never going to fit at DT but is set up for nose. Phillips and Tuttle at DE with Kongbo and Emerson for depth. See what pieces arrive from the recruiting class and start working at the transition. Thing is, we were rock bottom horrible in the 4-2-5...only direction available is up.

NT - McKenzie, Crosby
WDE - Kongbo, Butler
SDE - Tuttle, Picou
WOLB - Taylor, A. Smith
SOLB - Phillips, D. Johnson
ILB - Kirkland, Ignont
ILB - Bituli, Blakely?

Not ideal by any stretch, but our from 7 is in better shape for a switch to 3-4 than we have been in a long time.

You can see why Pruitt immediately offered like 12 guys that can fill those OLB roles though.

I think Sapp is an awesome player, he just doesn't seem to be a fit in 3-4 due to his build. Looking back though, Sapp is listed as 6'2" and 222, he could 25 lbs or so and fit in at ILB. And I'd say Gray definitely stays at safety if we go to 3-4.

Most of b amas lb these days are 230 to 245 fast and strong as a ox....not 260 anymore

I agree with some that transition won't be as bad as some think our dline is bigger and slower if we can make lb core work we could have much better defense even in year o e cause we have been putrid for years

Because these guys did so good in a 4-3 lol

Bituli was able to show out despite inept coaching and too much time on the sidelines. Better S&C could help keep guys like Tuttle and Kirkland healthy. I believe better S&C/coaching could also reveal a different side to guys like Phillips and McKenzie.

While I think Bituli can become really good he missed a lot of plays right in front of him this year. On 2 plays I recall immediately he was the last defender and the missed plays resulted in TDs. He still needs A LOT OF WORK to play at the SEC level....

If Kirkland stays healthy (big if), a 3-4 allows he and Bituli on the field simultaneously with Ignot in reserve. It actually plays to the advantage of our personnel strength at LB

Not on the outside though. Our current roster will struggle to fill the OLB spot in a 3-4. I agree it is beneficial to our MLB. I think it benefits our DL personnel. We don't have quick twitch pass rush DEs on the roster. Phillips, Kongbo, Bennett, Butler, Piccou are all better suited for 3-4. Tuttle is the only one thatis really better suited to be a 4-3 DT. Taylor and Smith only really true OLB fits.

Bituli (along with Warrior and Gailden) is one of the players that I am most excited to see perform under Pruitt. Could be wrong, but I'm betting he has a monster year.

Regain Dorian Gerald and another wildcard from the upcoming class. Giant fantasy but Adam Anderson was never a match when he was a DE prospect for us...but if Chatman gets in his ear? :jawdrop:

Green and Anderson would be huge steps in that right direction with a 3-4. Chatman is much better fit in 3-4.

I don’t think our players fit well in a 3-4 or 4-3 lol.

Here’s the thing: CJP has almost 2 months to get some folks in them at fits what he wants. One thing he talked about the other day, and what I’m watching for is how he schemes to our current personnel plus who he brings in. I truly don’t think he’s going to force a square peg in a round hole like Butch (look at how CJP manages the FSU defense). IMO, he should and will scheme to what we have.
