'18 TN DL Greg Emerson (UT commit 7/3/17)

I could see Reid bulking up and playing inside. Thaxton could be an OLB as an edge rusher. Picou and Bennett could both play end in 3-4 as they are like quick DT's. Page and Sapp are better 4-3 LB's.

In theory those guys can all make those moves. I doubt they all end up being capable of it though.

Not on the outside though. Our current roster will struggle to fill the OLB spot in a 3-4. I agree it is beneficial to our MLB. I think it benefits our DL personnel. We don't have quick twitch pass rush DEs on the roster. Phillips, Kongbo, Bennett, Butler, Piccou are all better suited for 3-4. Tuttle is the only one thatis really better suited to be a 4-3 DT. Taylor and Smith only really true OLB fits.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see them use Bituli at OLB in spots.

Taylor seems like a lock to get one OLB spot and Smith could get the other in theory, but he hasn’t played ball in 2 years. Hard to count him as a lock.

Bituli on the other hand has played Sam in a 4-3 under, which isn’t super different from the role of OLB in a lot of 3-4 schemes. If Kirkland is healthy and Sapp or Ignont can play MLB at a high enough level, then I bet we see them move Bituli around a bit and utilize his versatility.

If Khalil is our NT we are screwed. He gets blown up one on one and would not eat space in the middle. Shy would be better at NT than he would be.

"the visit was amazing," emerson said. "it was a good visit. It wasn't as much about learning, as it was about noticing to me. Noticing how they work and they really believe in what they tell you. They want people that want to be at tennessee. Players that are talented both on and off the field."

so what did he learn about new tennessee head coach jeremy pruitt? "a nice guy and he knew what he was coming too," emerson said. "he knew this is a program in the making, but it's already shot up with him here."

"what stood out to me was the basically everyone on the staff has won a championship," emerson said. "some national championships and some conference championships, but as a whole they know what it's like to win."

"i've known coach rocker since he was at georgia and came to northside," emerson said. "then coach rumph, i didn't know much about him, but i had heard he was a tough coach and knew what he was doing. I think coach rocker is coaching the defensive line and coach rumph is coaching linebackers. Coach rocker told me that he sees me as a guy that can come in and earn a starting spot as a freshman."

"i always saw myself fitting into the defense," emerson said. "i think i can come in as a freshman and make a big impact on the defensive side of the ball. Watching trey gets me excited to see what type of impact i can make. He went in and showed his work ethic and earned everything he got. I'm ready to do that."

emerson will sign with tennessee on december 20th.

Is there any guarantee we are running 3-4? He said he’d play to our strengths.

Just speculation at this point.

I'm guessing we'll look kind of multiple in 2018 and run mostly 3-4 in 2019. Gonna have to recruit a few DTs and OLBs to run it in 2019 though.

What’s up with asking for followers? Is this relatively common or is this a new thing? Seems like a new thing to me. Is CJP telling them to do this by chance?

Remember guys, Pruitt played almost exclusively even fronts at FSU in 2013.

I don't know if Sheerer has much experience in 4 man base fronts, but I would still guess we see it the majority of this season while we recruit for his preferred personnel.

I think they all just saw that one guy ask for followers and how many he ended up getting and now they all wanna ask

I'm interested to see what kind of sub packages they use. It would be cool to see them use a lot of different fronts, but it might be asking a bit too much to install a lot of different looks.

I think the closest we will resemble Bama's defensive style next year is in the secondary. I really hope Gaulden comes back, so he can play the Minkah Fitzpatrick role. He will have a monster year and improve his draft stock dramatically.

Greg Emerson, North Side, Strong-Side Defensive End
Hudl sophomore highlights

Under-the-radar kid with no recruiting profile available, but he just received his 1st offer (Michigan State). No idea if UT is looking at him yet but he'll be one to watch in the future. Was listed at 245 on North Side's roster last fall so he may project as a future DT.

“My coach Robert Gillard knows some people at Michigan State and got me an invite to spend the weekend there and watch their spring game [on Saturday],” Emerson said.

During the visit, Emerson was called into a meeting in the office of Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio. “He asked me if I had any offers yet, and I told him no,” Emerson said. “He told me then that I had an offer from them. He told me there was no pressure or anything and to take time to think about it and make the right decision.”

Emerson stands at 6-feet-4 and weighs 270 pounds. His best 40-time is 4.7.

North Side's Emerson offered by Michigan St.

Has anyone heard any news on how Emerson’s ankle and leg are progressing? Hopefully, his healing is going well.
