Then there is Lane, who continues to pile up offers. He added Kentucky, Mississippi State and Cal this week. He is hearing from LSU more and more. He is set to take a trip up north to see Northwestern and Wisconsin this week over spring break. All of that said, he appears to be liking Tennessee more and more. He grew up a Vol fan and has been in steady contact with Walt Wells and even attended workouts earlier this week with his older brother, Hunter, who plays at Austin Peay and was in town for spring break.
I caught up to Ollie Lane a bit ago. He spent a large part of today on campus taking in practice, meeting with academic people and seeing the dorms and stuff he hasn't seen before. His big focus was on seeing Walt Wells coach and he said he liked what he saw.
He told me it was a really good visit where he learned some football things as well as the academic plan, which is something he requested for today.
He said his relationship with coach Wells is really growing. Sounds like he's close to a top 3 or top 5.
Lane has no other trips planned to other schools at this point. He will attend the Rivals camp and one other combine camp in the next 4-6 weeks and the rest of his focus is on spring practice with his high school team.
Will have the full story later on.
I was really looking for how coach Wells coaches, Lane said. Saturday, I think I saw the perfect kind of coach. He's going to get into you when he needs to, but at the same time he's going to sit back and teach you some things. I noticed that. What I have been taking note of a lot is the intensity of their practices. Saturday, they were doing something non-stop. There was no rest time. I like that. You are on the move everywhere you go.
I wanted to see how coach Wells carried himself on the practice field and how he carried himself amongst his players, Lane explained. Then I also wanted to observe some of the techniques they do and take that home to work on. With them wanting me to fit into the center guard type position, I really took note of steps and techniques that I could work at when I'm at home with my dad.
We have finished our spring tour. I have seen everything that I wanted to see, Lane said. One of the big things that I have had at these schools is the opportunity to tour their facilities and talk academics. Saturday, I got to talk to Tennessee's academic advisors and then I also got to see the dorms when I hadn't been able to do. Getting to see all these places really helps me take note of do I really want to go there. Would I fit in to their academic plan. All the little things that these visits have taught me in the sense of where I want to go has really helped me narrow it down. There are some schools that I just don't feel like I need to take a visit to just because I know that I don't want to go there or it wouldn't be a place where I would fit in well."
I would like to get it done sooner rather than later, Lane said. I definitely would like to be committed before my season starts. I feel like it would take a layer off of you knowing where I am going to school, not let's just go have fun with my high school friends. Getting that done before the season maybe even mid-summer would be great. I probably already have an idea of where I want to go, I just haven't put it together yet. These visits have really helped me a lot to narrow things down.
I say we take up to 5. Too many in-state OL with great talent to pass up on in my opinion. Could even take 6 if we can get who we exactly want.
I'd be shocked if we took 6. Highly unlikely we take 5 (possible I suppose). We can't just take all those O-linemen because they are good and from TN. We will still have to fill other needs...taking extra linemen over filling positions of need is just not going to happen IMO.
I say we take 4...and it won't be because we don't want the others, we just won't have room.
You have to consider possible injury situations in which we've been placed into a difficult situation for a couple of seasons now at OL. That's why I say take at least 5 if not 6. The walk-ons aren't going to cut it I don't believe.
We easily have that many top notch in-state OL anyhow but we're probably not going to get them all anyhow. I'd take a solid one from out of state if we can't get them all in-state. Thanks.
We also need about 3 WRs, a couple TEs, probably 2 RBs, and a QB. That's 8 on O in addition to the OL. If we take 4 that's 12 on O. We need at least 3 DTs and probably 3 DEs as well. We need 2 or 3 LBS plus a couple of DBs. We have needs all over the place but our OL depth is spread out over several classes so we can afford to only take 3 or 4 there in order to fill up some other positions that we are razor thin at. Taking 6 OL would not be smart.
This. We'll also need a punter. Only so many spots.
