'18 TN OL Ollie Lane (UT signee)

It is great that we have so much in state talent but we aren't taking our entire class from in state. We will take some out of state guys too. Of course that will tick some people off because they want us to take every in state guy that knows how to tie his shoes. The staff knows their needs. It may not even be a full 25 signee class if we have to use some blueshirts. If we can only take 23 then I think OL is the first place they look to scale back.

This is how they will react. They act like you kicked their dog and stood their mom up on a blind date if we don't take every in state player with a pulse. Then they get upset if we don't have a top 5 class. You can't win with some folks. The phrase "must get" is thrown around here with reckless abandon and really needs to be reserved for those truly special players. I'm sure somebody will disagree with me even if they are wrong.

I sometimes think you have to have went to college in another state to understand that is what most kids want to do. You have to go out there, nationwide, and get them to want to come to your school. If elite players want to stay in-state that is awesome, sign them up but reality...

I mentioned a while back that VN had identified about 50 "must get" players in the 2018 class. Lots of drama in this forum to have so few teenaged girls in it.

Lol. I have mentioned that I have a pre-teen girl of my own and I live with less drama in my house than I find on here on a daily basis. Lots of bunched up panties. At least we have a couple women to help set the little girls straight. :hi:

We also need about 3 WRs, a couple TEs, probably 2 RBs, and a QB. That's 8 on O in addition to the OL. If we take 4 that's 12 on O. We need at least 3 DTs and probably 3 DEs as well. We need 2 or 3 LBS plus a couple of DBs. We have needs all over the place but our OL depth is spread out over several classes so we can afford to only take 3 or 4 there in order to fill up some other positions that we are razor thin at. Taking 6 OL would not be smart.

I see what you're saying Glitch but how can we pass on getting possibly six 4*-5* OL from one class & possibly all from in-state? That doesn't come around very often.

I say definitely no less than 5 OL but if we could get 6 top notch OL from in-state or one or two out of state then we just can't pass on that in today's times.

We've had injuries to kill us at the OL position the past couple of years & the walk-ons aren't really capable of filling in for injured players & providing quality enough play.

That's just my take on the OL situation. You're right. We do have needs at all those other positions but secondary we could take less than what we normally need because we are pretty deep there now. But, I really do get what you're trying to say. Thanks.

Injuries also killed us at DT, LB, and DB last year. We might be able to get by with 1 RB this year. We need 3 WRs though, especially with Murphy likely to not make it and Fant is still a question mark. We need two TEs with what we are losing and the emphasis CLS wants to put on using the TEs. What position do you think we can scrimp on in order to take two extra OL? Our OL depth

Boulware - RS SO
Richmond - RS SO
Coleman Thomas - SR
Riley Locklear - FR
Niehaus - RS FR
Kendrick - RS SR
Jones - JR
Tatum - SO
Johnson - RS FR
Smith - FR
Robertson - SR
Hall - JR
Brooks - RS FR

That is 13 scholarship OL with Calbert set to enroll this summer for a total of 14. That will be 17% of our scholarship players. We will lose three next year taking us to 11. If we sign 6 like you want, that will take us to 17 scholarship OL or 21% of our scholarship players. I understand the need to have top OL play but what area do you propose to cut back on if we are to have 1/5 of our scholarships tied up on the OL. If we lose three to graduation and sign four, we still increase our depth but not to the decrement of other positions. We can't sign 6 in state OL just because they are good. You have to look at the big picture.

There are outstanding programs that turn down some great players every year because they just don't have room for all of them. It is my hope that we are watching Tennessee turn into one of those programs. We will see.

You have to have skill players too. If you take 6 OL you have to take fewer skill players. What good is having OL depth if you run out of skill players. Early in Butch's time at UT taking 6 OL would have made sense but not with the solid depth we have now. 4 max IMO.

We have very good depth on the OL now. You can't basically have 25% of your class made up of one position group. Especially with what we have at the position now. It would leave us too short somewhere else. Think 0 OL in 2011 that put us in the mess last year.

No more than 4, probably 3.

Cade= Locked in
Wray= Spot held
Iyama= Likely
Lane= Likely
If Wray doesn't commit, they might take someone else that is highly regarded.

If enough people say it he still won't believe us.

Need to sign a minimum of 4 OL every year

Except this past class, right? And the class before that...?

2016 - Johnson, Niehaus, & Tatum
2017 - Calbert, Locklear, & Smith

Just saying, despite the coaches not meeting your minimum, our OL is as deep as it has been since Fulmer's days.

We have had one DL move to OG, though he is not still on the team and one TE has also moved to OL. Your point is still valid.

I think we take 4 this class. I think the ideal number is 15 (3 deep across). That's ideally 3 per class with all redshirting. But sometimes they're too good to RS, or there's attrition.
