Ive been a little surprised that its all happened so early. Tennessee was my earliest offer and I think that kind of got things rolling a little bit. Vandy hopped on and now South Carolina and Ole Miss have offered, Schoenwald said. Im just trying to take things as they come. Growing up I always heard people talk about how stressful recruiting is, and I was like, how can that be? But now I can see how it could be a really stressful. For me though, its really fun right now and Im trying to enjoy it as much as I can. Schoenwald has played all over the offensive side of the ball for his Brentwood Academy squad, including quarterback, but hes projected as tight end at the next level.
For me its mostly about my position and learning how programs use the tight end. With Tennessee thats kind of up in the air now with Coach Debo leaving. Ill be interested to see who they hire, whether they stay in staff, Ive heard that Coach (Larry) Scott is a name. That will be a big factor for me at any school, Schoenwald said.
I watch football games differently now that Im playing tight end. I used to just watch the quarterback but now I pay a lot of attention to whats going on away from the ball. The game has really evolved as far as that position goes. Youre not a sixth lineman all the time. Tight ends get split out, go in motion as an H-back or something. I think my versatility kind of matches the way that position is being used by a lot of people these days.
I think it definitely helps make Tennessee more attractive when you see the success kids from Nashville and Murfreesboro have had there. Its a little more appealing seeing how guys have gone there and been able to develop, Schoenwald shared. Like, Derek was great high school player for sure, but he wasnt Reggie White when he was a senior. So seeing how the player development there is very appealing especially when youre talking about someone that went to my same high school.
To be honest right now every place that I visit I come away liking a lot. I couldnt really name a favorite right now, he said when asked about leaders.
