'18 TN RB Master Teague

SMH...nobody overreacted about anything. The SC identified and targeted a great in state talent before the state school did. They went all in on him and got out front. Now that we're chasing, the staff decides to turn up the heat. That much is pretty well accepted as truth. :)

There has been plenty of "what are Butch and company thinking about" posts by the standard handwringers. They are the ones that start soaking mattresses if anyone speculates about a negative outcome of any recruit.

Tennessee identified him early. They just didn't pin their 2018 hopes on him a year or more away from Signing Day. Your account of the events surrounding his recruitment is a little dramatic. I think no one really knew how hard we were pursuing for a long time, and so it was just assumed that we were indifferent to Teague. That doesn't appear to be the case in hindsight.

You see it your way, I see it mine. Yours is more revisionist than mine however imo. And I dont think I'm being dramatic. I have been on the record for awhile regarding my belief that Teague is an elite talent. It is dramatic IF you lose out on elite talent by being slow on the draw. Notice I did say IF. I hope the staffs current efforts make up whatever ground was lost to Mushchump by their waddling. Also by their current efforts, it can be safely assumed that the staff now agrees with my heretofore disparaged assessment of Teagues eliteness :)

I also think that some of it has to do with us being in on several elite RBs in this class. Teague, Franks, Currie-Elliot, among others. It appears we may end up with multiple 4* RBs in this class that fit our system well, so I think it was a "problem" we are lucky to have personally.

We've been in on several of the elite of the elite QBs too...still whiffing. I hope you're right though.

How is my assessment revisionist at all, let alone more so than anyone's? I'm just addressing the facts of the matter.

but if an in-state kid looks elite you certainly don't want to dither and fall behind--no matter how many other players at the same position you are chasing. Get the in-state kid and then an out-of-state RB with equal talent is a bonus. We had more than a few changes among coaches, which might be one reason for earlier slackness in our pursuit.

Irony is a poster with a world avatar emphasizing in-state above talent or fit.

Because it seems like you are saying that the staff has been all in on Teague from the beginning. That is bull. They are now obviously trying to make up ground that was lost to SC because they didn't drag butt around about getting after him. I hope it works out. But I really don't want to argue about it anymore, I'm just glad they aren't fiddledickin around anymore.

From a Clemson fan site

At the moment Teague is hovering around 5’11, 211 pounds, majority of which is muscle as is evident in his recent 500 pounds squat during a lifting session at his high school.

Great start to squat day. Teague 500, Brown 485,Knox 440,Miller 460,Pawloski 405,Moore 455, Otey 425, Quadir and Mitchell 405 pic.twitter.com/6aQ5yUt7gU

I asked Teague about his development going into his senior season. Here is what he had to offer.

“’I’ve been getting faster, I am faster now than last season, but I’m still working on gaining this weight and trying to maintain speed. I’ve been speed training and working out hard, getting better and getting faster.”

“I want to get better at my pass blocking and I’ve been getting better at catching the ball, those are the two areas I want to improve on.”

When asked about his strengths as a player, Teague’s answer was mature and to the point.

“I hit the hole quick, get north and south, I don’t do a lot of shifting and moving I just try to get to the end-zone as quick as possible.”

This answer perfectly depicts Teague’s mentality as both a person and a player, he is modest and comfortable with himself. Later on in our conversation Teague explained how he dealt with the pressure of the recruiting process.

“I’d say every offer, every contact is a blessing, I just don’t approach life like I am better than anybody.”

“I am a humble person, I just want to enjoy being with people and bonding.”

Teague recently released his list of top schools.

I asked Teague if he was planning on trimming that list down once more before coming to his decision.

“Yes we plan on trimming it down a little bit, hopefully next time we’ll trim it down to about seven or I don’t know exactly how much, but we want to trim it down one more time.”

“I am not sure if I will make a decision from there, but I know we want to make a decision by summer. Some time in the summer.”

Teague detailed what factors will play into the trimming of his list.

“Really just praying over it, praying about it and really feeling what the lord tells us. Like I said, what schools are going to best prepare me and how they develop their players.”

Obviously, Teague has his fair share of options. When asked who was recruiting him the hardest at the moment he offered this.

“I have to say Tennessee because they send me a lot of things in the mail. Four or five coaches talk to me and message me, they also DM me on twitter.”

Teague also named one of the Vols coaches as the most interesting personality he’s come across on the recruiting trail, “At Tennessee, coach Walt Wells, he’s a character.”

From the sounds of it, Clemson has some work to do to gain ground on the hometown Vols and some of the other programs that have already offered Teague. I asked Teague about the possibility of taking an official visit to Clemson, here’s what he had to offer.

“I am not sure, because I know that I want to make a decision this summer and after I make that commitment I don’t want to take any official visits unless it’s to the school that I am committed to.”

Though Clemson may be a little behind in his recruitment, Teague was impressed with their staff and facilities on his recent junior day visit.

“Oh yea it was crazy, the weight room is huge but it was a good visit seeing all the facilities and the other rooms so I thought it was a good visit.”

“I liked when coach swinney was talking to all the recruits and basically what he believes in and how he runs the program so I thought that was great.”

“They just seem like they are all real passionate, they seem like they are all Christian men. They bring their faith to the team and I think that’s real great. The culture is about building their players, they try to build them as men and as people outside of football and I think that’s great.”

Although Teague expressed his affinity for more power-oriented offensive systems, he is open to the idea of playing in Clemson’s spread offense.

“I think I could, if I feel like that’s the right place for me, where I can grow the most then I’ll do that, but like I said, I like that power.”

Dabo Swinney and his staff place an emphasis on academics, Teague shares that same sentiment.

“Of course I want to get a degree, I am not sure what I want to major in quite yet. I am not sure if I want to finish in three or four years but I definitely want to get that degree.”

Let’s face it, with a name like Master, Teague will immediately have one of the best names in all of college football as a freshman. Here’s how Teague got his name.

“Well my great grandad was named Master Lee Teague and then my grandad is Master William Teague. So my great grandad, my grandad and it skipped my dad and I got it.”

I have no doubts that Master Teague III will have a successful collegiate career regardless of where he ends up. Teague is as grounded a kid as you will meet. His goals for the next level are music to every college coach’s ear.

“Just to play my hardest and give my all and play for Christ. I will allow christ to handle the stats and everything, I just want to play as a team and help my team win. Whatever I can do to help my team win”

Hopefully Dabo Swinney and his staff will be able to outlast the plethora of schools vying for Teague’s services as he would be a great addition to the Clemson backfield and locker room.

I like that he is committing in the summer. Get him on campus in a April and hopefully seal the deal

No, I'm saying that Tennessee has apparently been just a little more involved than some of the dramatic hand-wringers were willing to admit. Those same people who were ready to string Butch up for not crawling to Murfreesboro on his hands and knees a year+ before signing day to beg an instate kid to come play ball.

The early bird approach didn't work so well for Tee Higgins, so I can't be too disappointed that Butch didn't go all in on Teague 18 months before he could sign. It's not like he waited until January 2018 to make him a priority either. Late winter-spring before his senior year seems like an appropriate time to narrow the focus.

Now that was an overdramatized description of my feelings on this recruitment. What I said is still true. They drug their feet, and now are trying to make up ground on mushmouth.

Teague seems to disagree with you. He seems to think the Vol recruitment is going well. You havent yet let go of your view that the sky is falling on this recruit. You were out of touch on this one. Butch was miles ahead of you. It's okay. Just give it up and stop trying to debate that you were right all along because you clearly weren't.

What are you effin talking about? I don't think the sky is falling on this recruit. And I was right.

So Teague says the Vols are recruiting him the hardest, but you were right that we weren't giving him enough attention? Ok

You said the word yourself...NOW. They obviously believe he is worth the effort NOW. I was right months ago she I said they should be all over this kid. I suppose you morons loved not getting Philips for pretty much the same reason...dragging their feet. Look you guys misunderstand me..overall I think the staff does a good job recruiting. They dropped the ball early on Teague and allowed SC to get a toehold. That is a fact. And I think it was a mistake to be so damn slow on a local kid with obvious elite skills...but mistakes get made, people are human. I'm no anti Butch lunatic.
