'18 TN WR Tykee Kellogg

Good point. Your prior post used "local" instead of "in-state", but when your state is 440 miles across and your state university is on one end then there's a lot of area more "local" than the Memphis area is to UT. One of the reasons I never understand why some folks get bent when a west TN recruit goes Ole Miss or one of the universities closer to home?

Yeah, I shoulda let my attorney look at it first lol. We need to convince those Atlanta and North GA kids that we are their local college. WNC kids already know it.

Agree with you whole-heartedly BTW. Memphis has fewer ties to Knoxville than Texas does. At least we sent some folks down there to fight.

I just dont put such a premium on proximity but you are right we want the same thing.

Well let me ask you this.

If they grew up vols fans, come from schools that produce 4 and 5 star talent annually, are easier for our coaches to reach and recruit, and will build pipelines to those schools in the future, in state, are they not considerably more valuable than a once in a while kid we manage to cherry pick out of California that requires out coaches to spend several days on the road just to see one kid maybe?

I think that as long as there is no huge style of play difference between a prospect and what the coaches want, that in state talent should be a priority.

This is just my opinion, obviously, and as you have disagreed with others, I understand if this is a moot point and respect your opinion. :)

Edit: in response to the comments above, I do concede that "local" rather than in state may be a better way to look at it. Memphis is much further away from Knoxville than several states, obviously.

I really don't think Newt is against TN recruits. All things being equal, take the TN kid. However, while TN's level of athletes is increasing rapidly, we are still a far cry from equaling the talent in states like Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and California. Our goal should be to get the best athletes in TN that fit our system and then go out and compete for the best in the other, more talent rich, states. We are gonna miss on some in TN and we shouldn't take a TN kid just because he is a TN kid if there is a kid from another state that is better at football. Taking TN kids for the sake of taking TN kids will not result in the highly rated classes that some many desire. There just isn't enough talent yet and we simply won't be able to keep them all besides.

Well thanks for understanding(no sarcasm). In my experience kids are not really all that about the school they grew up a fan of nor are TN kids necessarily Vol fans and of course we know the reasons why. So really the only reason to put such a priority on in state kids is to develop relationships with schools and high school coaches to create pipelines. In my opinion you can do that anywhere and UT has shown they can.

So that leaves proximity where you can visit and spend time with a kid who is closer. So that comes down to a numbers game. A two hour drive vs a 2 - 3 hour flight?

If you prioritize all kids equally and make UT a destination school as opposed to a "you live in this boundary so you should come here" then I think in the long run you wind up with the best of both: in state kids who truly want to be Vols and fit what you are looking for and out of state kids that want to get away from where they grew up and play in front of 100k + and get a shot at going to the NFL.

Its been distorted to where I only want out of state recruits. Not the case I want the best regardless. If they happen to be from Farragut or Alcoa, great. If they happen to be from Bismark, just as great.

I understand the sentiment of both not wanting a top recruit to choose a conference foe and to keep the top talent in state, but there is still much more of a UT presence here from what I've seen than an OM presence. I will grant that there is still a large contingent of OM fans here.

Like when Peyton signed. Or Heath. Or Clausen. Or Jamal Lewis. Or Eric Berry. Or...

Honestly I can think of one class, maybe two, where in-state talent seemed like a catalyst. It's certainly not the norm.

In state talent is way better these days

The Vols HAVE to get his kid, especially after missing on guys like Higgins and Amari. His highlight film left me breathless the first time I watched it.

Okay, hyperbole. But still, it's highly impressive

They didn't miss on Rogers. There was no big push to get him here.

"Great day at UT with my boi @Jalynnsykes1 this place might actually turn out to be home bro!🍊✊🏽"

I honestly forget how to share a tweet. I probably haven't done it in two years. But here you go...

Going to hold off just a little bit, but wouldn't be surprised to see something within the next couple weeks. Was told this one is pretty much in the bag, unless something crazy happens.
