Daniels is arguably the top QB out West in the 2019 class. Dual-threat kid but a polished pocket passer who just as comfortable throwing as he is running it. Smooth, effortless release, strong enough arm and only scratching the surface of how good he'll be in a few years. Kind of a late bloomer, was about 5-9 as a freshman, now he's pushing 6-3 and keeps getting better.

Watch his JR season hudl. His WRs and OL look better than ours does. Seems like a good thrower with wheels. Now either this guy is a once in a generation type of QB or he plays on a loaded team against weak competition.

Interesting... thought we wanted more pro style but if he can throw...

I don't think they care but the first thing they will look at is their ability to throw. If they can run too its gravy. Whereas some coaches want a qb that can run and if they can throw its gravy.

I'll take him. This may be my QB for '19 over Howell. That's saying a lot. If he visits, it's game on.

From watching his hudle video, I'd imagine a couple of his receivers have some D1 offers.

PLAYER OF YEAR
Jayden Daniels, Jr., 6-1, 165, QB, Cajon

Quarterback Jayden Daniels of Cajon was a breakout star the minute he stepped into the starting spot on the varsity as a freshman.

He was stellar as a sophomore too, even though a broken finger on his throwing hand slowed him for much of the season.

And his junior year? Well that was off the charts.

Daniels threw for an astounding 5,139 yards with 62 touchdowns and just five interceptions. That yardage total was third best nationally. He was pretty nifty when it came to running the ball too – 1,292 yards on 193 carries with 15 touchdowns. All that propelled the Cowboys to a CIF Southern Section Division 4 title as well as a state runner-up showing. It doesn’t get much better than that.

So Daniels, 17, was an easy selection as Sun/Bulletin Player of the Year.

“I really couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said. “It would have been nice to win that last game but we’re still CIF champion and that hasn’t been done in a long time. It was definitely a season I’ll never forget.”

With those kind of numbers there were a lot of standout games. For Daniels the most memorable was the CIF Southern Section championship 54-28 win over Downey in which he passed for 293 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 281 and another four scores.

“It just felt good to go out there and have that kind of game in a big game,” he said.

The impressive run this season is setting Daniels up for what should be an exciting senior campaign. He has five Division I offers – Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida State and Oregon. His numbers and 3.7 grade-point average should bring in more as next season draws closer.

Daniels’ 9,312 career passing yards puts him well within striking distance of the county record of Redlands East Valley’s Armando Herrera (11,391 from 2012 to 2016).

While Daniels’ game has improved, so has maturity which most impresses coach Nick Rogers.

“He has the physical ability but he also has come a long way when it comes to the other attributes,” Rogers said. “He has become a great teammate and a great leader. We couldn’t ask anything more of him.”

Thanks. Kind of what I thought. But his film does look good.

Based on those references, I was inferring that his performance may have stood up pretty well against the top 25 teams in Tennessee. 9 of the 16 games they played may have been close to if not in the top 25 in TN and they went 7-2 in those games and a 46 point performance in one of those losses is a pretty good showing offensively. That 70 point explosion on the road against Rancho Verde is pretty impressive based on the national ranking. jmo.

The thing that stands out to me the most with guys like this is when they start and perform well as a Freshman or Sophomore in HS. I could be wrong but I see that as having a natural mental edge as a competitor. The stage is likely never going to be too big or too soon for them.

At this point based on limited and superficial research I'd be inclined to think we'd be very fortunate to land this kid. jmo.
