19 students, 3 adults dead in Texas elementary shooting.

All these coincidences around these things are so weird. Can't really blame people for believing the "conspiracy theories".
There was a book written in the 80’s by a guy who claimed he was a former military intelligence officer. He made the claim that the CIA wanted disarm Americans, and how they would do that is through mass school shootings. So he made this claim way before anything like Columbine took place. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy theory anymore.

Nothing happens in a vacuum. The problem of spree shootings can't be analyzed by just isolating one factor by itself. This is a toxic brew of many factors working in conjunction with each other over the course of the last 230 years. Prevalence and ease of access are a small part of it, but it would do no good to isolate those variables for restriction, while holding everything else constant.

Outside of fortifying schools as much as possible, I'm not sure what can be done at this point. Gun violence is too ingrained in American culture.
I agree that something has likely changed in the last 50 years, particularly the last 20 or 30. However, it isn't the number of guns relative to population size or ease of access. If anything, guns are more difficult to get today than 50 years ago. There is some other variable that has changed in the relatively recent past that has made mass shootings occur with more regularity.

Should be able to buy whatever you can afford and have your eyes on! Why mini nuke if you’ve got the coin the shell out for a hydrogen bomb!

When chief idiot-a-lot brings up the mini-nuke scenario in every gun related thread he never asks himself why terrorist organizations don't have them. It's not because their banned from possessing them, they're ****ing terrorists they don't care about the law. It's because they can't afford them or the components to make them.

I'm also curious why the publicity around the shooter has not been investigated as a factor in these events. The number of time I've seen a reference back to Columbine as related to the shooter seems significant. If we have our government monitoring for ISIS and child porn sympathizers, should they add a category for these events?

I might be the only "pro-gun" person in the thread to admit this: If our culture did not have such an affinity for firearms, the United States would not have as much gun violence. I think we'd have the same level (or maybe even more) crime overall, but less gun violence. That's just common sense.

However, that does not mean that it is the fault of our affinity for firearms for creating the gun violence problem. The United States has had a strong affinity for firearms, far in excess of other Western industrialized nations, since its founding. Regular mass shootings and school shootings, however, have not occurred since the country's founding. Isolate the variable(s) that appear to be new, because "there are 120 guns for every 100 citizens!!!" or "America loves guns!!!" are not new developments. However, regular mass shootings are relatively new developments.

This was a slow moving car wreck. No more mental health facility incarceration, life like video games with first person killer scenes, little to no father interaction anymore, people like EL's nasty comment yesterday about the husband of one of the teachers that was killed and died of a heart attack. The country is sick.

Minus the video games, I agree with you. I think it is easier than ever before for people to get into dark places where they feel isolated and have nowhere to turn. There have always been people like that on the fringes of society, but I think greater numbers of them cluster now on the end of the bell curve.

With the words "***** ** * School" how was this not flagged by Instagram (I omitted the words so I'm not flagged) and this not investigated?
I wondered the same but wasn't smart enough to self censor...so I am on a watch list, I guess.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I found it amazing that a woman jumped the fence and went into the school and took her two kids out on her own while the police were sitting on their thumbs.
