2/9/11, Carolina vs. Duke: Round 1

I know I hate them, but Carolina is still not a championship team and rushing the court is just embarassing. You're the #13 team in the country playing at home. You've got two national titles in the past five years. Just kind of pathetic.

Put them on the road against a team with real big men and Carolina won't be able to do anything. Would love to see a Round 3 with Duke in the ACC Championship game though.

Bummed out from the loss, I see. How is rushing the court after you beat your rival for the conference championship pathetic? Who makes these rushing the court rules? I apologize for college students having fun. Carolina has one of the best frontcourts in the nation, playing a team with real? big men has not been and will not be a problem. Sorry that Duke's best big man, Plumlee, fouled out with a whopping zero points. Bummer.

I'm not really that bummed about the loss. No one's won a conference championship yet. As I've already pointed out in this thread, the ACC doesn't recognize a regular season champion. As for rules, there is no need for the #13 team to ever rush the court after beating someone at home. Especially a team with such tradition as UNC. Rushing the court is for when something extraordinary happens. Like if Old Dominion somehow got to play Duke at the Ted (ODU's homecourt) and somehow won. Or if Tennessee-Martin played the Vols at Martin and won. Duke hasn't had a real big man since Shelden Williams. Pay more attention, that's been talked about for eons. And no, UNC didn't face any real big men in the ACC. Quit kidding yourself man.

I love how when basketball season rolls around everyone thinks I have to be a Vols fan. It's as pathetic as the Colts slurpers thinking I have to cheer on Peyton. I've never cared for UT Men's basketball and never will. Get over it.

While I generally would be against UNC having a court storming, nobody on this Tar Heel team aside from Justin Watts and Tyler Zeller (bit roles on '09 team) has won anything at Carolina. Hadn't beat Duke. Haven't been to the NCAA tourney. Haven't even won a ACC tourney game. Considering all of that, along with how bad they were last year, people transferring, Drew quitting mid-season, etc., PLUS going undefeated at home for the season and beating Duke to claim sole posession of first place in the conference heading into the tourney (only the 5th time that's ever been at stake in this matchup) and I'm willing to overlook it this time.

There is literally no correlation between the 2 things you just listed.

I also love how last month, it was "Carolina still isn't back" and now it's "Duke's overrated, wait 'til the Heels play a team that can play D and rebound, etc." Your Duke team is essentially the same Duke team that won the title last year. There is no dominant team in the NCAA this year. Very few dominant big men anywhere. Kansas typically disappoints in the NCAA tourney. Texas typically disappoints in the NCAA tourney. Big East is overrated as a whole, but Pitt and Notre Dame are looking good right now. Carolina certainly shouldn't and won't be a favorite to win it all, but they have just as good a shot as anyone else, and better than many. Will have to make some outside shots throughout the tourney and Henson has to avoid foul trouble. After Duke's favorable bracket last year, will this be the year that all of the 15 and 16 seeds are assigned to their bracket?

UNC fans rushing the court tonight was pathetic. As said by others, you are ranked in the Top 15 in the country. On top of that, UNC has a litany of basketball tradition. The fans acted as if UNC never won the ACC before.

Just very sad.

It's a little of both.

Your Duke team is essentially the same Duke team that won the title last year.

Hell no. That team's style changed because of Zoubek, who's now gone, and I'd say Scheyer was a little more than just a role player as well. This year's team was supposed to repeat because of Kyrie Irving. Where was he?

No, I think that's called the NIT...but that's something you should ask a UNC fan about.

Duke '10 Singler/Smith/Scheyer + stiffs
Duke '11 Singler/Smith/Curry + stiffs

Essentially the same team. Can't believe you've evoked the Zoubek defense.

What's the correlation between me having to be Tennessee basketball fan because I'm a Tennessee football fan? I grew up in TN, but I have much more ties to the state of NC with family and such. I even grew up 30 minutes from the state line. My undergrad school doesn't have a football team and my grad school didn't have a football team until two years ago, 3 years after I graduated. I despised the way Wade Houston ran the team when I was growing up and so I'm not a fan of UT basketball. I was a huge Bobby Hurley fan as a kid and Duke stuck with me. Plus, it was the one NC school that someone in my family didn't root for, so it gave me reason to be different and be part of their rivalries.

If Milligan College ever started football back up (they had it back in the '50s) and played Tennessee, I would be cheering on Milligan. My Buffaloes would get slaughtered, but I'd be wearing my orange and black. Perhaps that's the main reason why I hate the idea of UT wearing black jerseys.

can't believe you're denying Zoubek's sudden ability to start rebounding two-thirds the way through the regular season wasn't what turned the program around last year. Smith, Scheyer and Singler didn't really do anything different all year long.

I'm just not a fan of split loyalties. I stick behind a school, not a program. That's where my viewpoint originates. I'm not trying to make this into a "true fan" thing, because that's BS. Having grown up in Memphis, I'm just so used to seeing tons of orange in the fall, and too much blue in the spring.

That would be like me saying the reason the '94 Heels didn't repeat was because Kevin Salvadori graduated. Or that the '10 Heels didn't repeat because Bobby Frasor didn't get an extra year. Take it up with the Plumlees.

Yeah, it would, if you spent three months under a rock last year. How many games did Bobby Frasor start during Carolina's championship run?

You should get some sleep. You're cranky after your team got spanked.

Point being, still should be enough talent on Duke's team. Blaming underachievement on the graduation of Brian Zoubek is pathetic.

Unless you know something about basketball, and can reason through the idea that one of the best rebounders in the nation (or one of the best creators, in Irving) would do wonders for a team way too reliant on the 3...

Hard for me to call this a "spanking" after that whole 82-50 thing...

I guess I'll have to chalk that one up to the Power of Zoubek. I'm glad he's gone. Never knew his absence would lead to a 46 point swing.

Irving did nothing to help '10 Duke. Zoubek shouldn't be that hard to replace. This Duke team is essentially the same as last year's. No more/less over/underrated, no more/less likely to win.

No, I've got the REAL solution: both teams are exactly the same, but Coach K is losing it and Duke's players just don't want it hard enough. Forget rebounding and PG play, they just randomly happened to get worse for totally abstract reasons that I can't even explain right now.

Or you could just say that UNC has improved and is a better team this year. Jason Williams said it on ESPN.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the kind of noncommittal statement you throw out there when you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
