We covered a lot of ground last week with the NBA Players’ Association Top 100 Camp with the biggest rumor we picked up being that many people who cover hoops recruiting at the national level have picked up some buzz from the Virginia side that the Cavaliers seem to be conceding Keon Johnson to Tennessee.

Virginia just has one more scholarship to give for the 2020 class and would love nothing more than to complete things ]with Keon Johnson, Jabri Abdur-Rahim or Henry Coleman.

Johnson would bring an added dimension of athleticism that the Cavaliers have not had in recent years while Coleman would be an immediate spark on the glass and in the toughness category. However, the best fit might be Abdur-Rahim, a top-50 small forward who will visit Charlottesville this weekend.

Abdur-Rahim is one of the most polished prospects in the 2020 class and is someone that would immediately provide a scoring threat. Even better, he would bring great size to the perimeter and allow for Tony Bennett to play a variety of lineups thanks to his positional versatility. Virginia has been nicked for its inability to score the ball for spurts and adding Abdur-Rahim to its roster would give Bennett maybe his most versatile, freshman scorer he has ever enrolled.

The Cavaliers are in a great spot and while Michigan and Villanova remain heavily involved, it looks as if the best fit could also be their next commitment of the three top targets remaining on its board.

Almost looks like they are promoting another recruit to ease the disappointment of missing out on Keon. 🤔

Who needs to keep him home? Tennessee
The competition: Ohio State and Virginia
Why he’s so important? Rick Barnes has built the Tennessee program in his vision and turned it into an SEC power. He’s done so by hitting on overlooked recruits and is now starting to mix in more highly regarded prospects. If the Vols want to be here to stay, they need to land in-state talent such as Johnson.

He’s a heck of a lot more fluid than Hubbs. Similar in athleticism to Bowden, but much more aggressive. I see more JRich, especially defensively, with less reliance on his jumper. If he can develop his jumper the way Richardson did, he won’t last 4 years wherever he goes.

Anyone thinking Johnson coming in here playing like Hubbs and Bowden did the last times we saw them won’t he good enough is crazy. If he’s that good from the start he’s going to be a star

Yeah if he puts up production as senior Hubbs and junior Bowden as a freshman then that will be fine but I hope he ends up better than those guys overall

You don’t think Johnson could give 28mpg 10ppg 3.5rpg as a freshmen?

I like the Richardson comparison but even that’s right johnson needs to be much better than him early on

No doubt JRich improved his outside shot and guard skills in his four seasons, but he might have been better than what he showed as a FR and SO, even. He just played second fiddle to McRae and Maymon. Keon Johnson will be more relied upon from the onset, so hopefully he has a more immediate impact.

I think Barnes wants to continue to change our pace of play offensively and Keon fits perfectly in that plan. He is a natural replacement for Bowden and Barnes has proved over and over again that he can help players improve their perimeter shot. Johnson has NBA talent written all over him with more polish and experience. He elevates and seems to just hang in the air and already has a good enough handle to be pretty much be impossible to defend on a fast break. He is a classic finisher apparently already. Hope we get some good news in August.
