The second-seeded Vols learned Monday they will open the tournament against the Bruins on Nov. 16 (TV: ESPNU, 9:30 p.m.) as part of a doubleheader in Thompson-Boling Arena.
Arkansas State (17-14 last season) and Missouri State (24-12) play in the other game in Knoxville, which is one of four regional sites.
The winners and losers from Knoxville's first-round games meet in Thompson-Boling Arena on Nov. 17.
Top-seeded Villanova, No. 3 seed Wake Forest and No. 4 seed UCLA will serve as the other regional sites for the 16-team tournament.
The regional champions meet in New York City on Nov. 24 in the semifinals, with the championship and consolation games taking place on Nov. 26.
The other 12 teams will play third- and fourth-round games (Nov. 22-23) on the home campus sites of the three highest remaining seeds.
None of the teams will play each other twice, and the third and fourth rounds will be assigned to the most geographically compatible site possible.
The Knoxville regional winner takes on the winner of the Wake Forest regional — which includes No. 5-seed Virginia Commonwealth, Hampton and Winthrop — in the semifinals.
'It's a field my team will be excited about,'' Pearl said. 'The prize in going to New York is what it's all about.''
First things first, Pearl isn't overlooking Belmont, which finished 19-12 last season.
'Belmont has been a perennial NCAA team, and with Rick Byrd they're one of the best-coached teams in the nation year-in and year-out,'' Pearl said.
'When you play the teams in your own state, as much as we're on TV, they have a feel for who we are and probably have a pretty good idea how to play us.''
Byrd, a Knoxville native and former student-assistant coach under former UT coach Ray Mears, gave the Vols all they wanted in the teams' last meeting in 2008 before falling 79-77 in Knoxville.
Pearl said the NIT second round game, against Missouri State or Arkansas State could prove just as daunting.
'Missouri State won 24 games last season and had an RPI of 75, and then you have John Brady (former LSU coach) at Arkansas State, and they made progress in the Sun Belt Conference last season with 17 wins,'' Pearl said.
'We're going to have to beat two very good teams just to get to New York.''
UT has yet to release its season schedule, but Pearl said Belmont will not be the season opener.
Villanova's bracket includes Marist, George Washington and Boston University while UCLA's has Pepperdine, Nevada and Pacific.
'This year's field can certainly hold its own against any of the previous 25 we've had,'' said C.M. Newton, chair of the NIT selection committee.
'Half of the field is coming off 20-plus win seasons and several fell just below that mark. We look forward to a competitive tournament.'
Tentative Schedule:
In addition to the preseason NIT, the Vols play at Pittsburgh (Dec. 11) at Charlotte (Dec. 17), and at Connecticut (date not yet finalized).
UT also plays host to Southern California (Dec. 21) and Memphis (Jan. 5). The SEC is expected to release the conference teams' full 2010-11 schedule within the next week.
