2011 Wimbledon (unofficial) Thread

And, to be clear, I'm not doing it with glee. I'm a Nadal guy, but I appreciate Fed. I realize how important he is to the game and I hope he plays for a couple more years. But the stage now belongs to the youngsters, and there is a whole slew of them.

Agreed. Doesn't do the work he did and has become error proneso doesn't hammer those absurd angles any more.

Predictions for tomorrow?

1. I give Tsonga little to no chance of beating Djoke.
2. I have this weird feeling that Murray is going to beat Rafa. And I can't believe I just typed that.

I hope Murray wins the damn thing. For several years now, I've hoped the Brits would get a winner. Doubt it will happen, though.

This has been the worst Wimbledon ever for me. First, I've only been able to watch bits and pieces here and there. Of course, I got to watch the 3rd set of Fed's match yesterday and had the gut feeling Tsonga was going to Soderling him, Berdych him, or Del Potro him.

Second, I haven't been able to watch any of it.

Third, did I mention I haven't been able to watch any of it.

I can't see Tsonga keeping his level and consistency as high as it was against RF. It is a truism of pro tennis that hot young player literally beats greater player into submission, but then hot young player suddenly loses his gusto in next round.

Tsonga could dominate, but hard to say which version will show up tomorrow.

I thought Murray had a decent shot at winning this thing from the start. Now that the moment is here, I don't see him beating Rafa. Rafa somehow has managed to look unbeatable to me at this point in London.

Murray should beat him, but I don't think he will. I say Nadal in 4 or 5 very, very close sets.

Oh, by the way, I won't get to watch any of it tomorrow. Too busy at work. First time in a long time I've let work take precedence over my tennis time.

Oh yeah, the whole point of my coming here to post.

Anyone see where Wilson just re-released a version of the Pete Sampras Pro Staff 6.0 PS85?

I've never hit with one and don't have a one-handed backhand, but I've heard old players talk so much praise about that racquet that I am going to demo one just to say I did. I think those sticks are ultra awesome may put a little money aside to get one for collectible reasons if nothing else.

Not sure if y'all have checked out Bill Simmon's new website. I really like it and read it regularly. Anyway, this writer I hadn't previously heard of (Brian Phillips), has been writing Federer pieces, and in so doing has established himself (imho) as the best (living) tennis writer on the planet. That title was previously held by the late David Foster Wallace, and has remained unclaimed until now. Excellent work, Mr. Phillips. I hope to hear more from you.
Great reads, and they aren't that long, so you have no excuse. Check 'em out:
The long autumn of Roger Federer - Grantland
Brian Phillips on Roger Federer's match against Mikhail Kukushkin - Grantland
Dog Days of Wimbledon: Brian Phillips on the Roger Federer-Adrian Mannarino match - Grantland
A look back on the first week at Wimbledon - Grantland
Brian Phillips on Roger Federer and Mikhail Youzhny - Grantland
Brian Phillips on Roger Federer's Loss - Grantland

Fed used that racquet back in the day. I know this only because the great Tom Rinaldi mentioned it in his packed-with-metaphors video piece on the 2001 Federer/Sampras match.

Good for you, as the two-handed backhand is simply a superior product. And I will argue this point with anyone who dare disagree.

I am pumped about this final. I picked the Djoker at the beginning of this thread, but man it's tough to go against Rafa right now

The court and balls set up very well for Nadal.

No one seems to have the interest in women's tennis that I do, but it's always interesting to watch Sharapova because you know within twenty minutes of every one of her matches whether she's going to put up a contest or not. Today, she obviously showed no signs of hanging with Kvitova.

Well I said that a new champion would hoist the trophy, but I thought it'd be Murray. Djokovic is working Nadal. This 2nd set is embarrassing.

Ted Robinson's tv commentating robs all joy out of watching major tennis finals. He is the biggest tool in the tv industry.

Djoke appears to have taken up residence in Rafa's head. The loose serve break in that last set was very unrafa.

Congeats to Djoke, though. He is now official; certifiable, if you will.
