2012 SF Derek Reese - New TN Commit

I'm normally pretty positive, but we just flat need better players than Reese. Last year was a scramble and anybody we got was simply gravy, but I hope Martin has a little more discerning eye from here on out. Wayne had committed to Pearl by this point and we could forget that his first signee was Ryan Childress.

I love how everyone on this site preaches patience with Dooley (who has taken several commitments from players with lackluster offer lists) but is ready to run Martin out of town over taking ONE guy like that.

Martin won't win many recruiting battles with BCS schools, and certainly not with elite programs, because he doesn't have an edge. No resume of getting to the NCAA tournament or putting guys in the NBA. No geography advantages. Lot of bad PR on Tennessee basketball in the last year. It's not a "hot" school. Martin probably knows this, so he's going to try to build it like he did at Missouri State. Get guys who will buy in to him, develop them, and hope to get into the NCAA Tournament discussion in Year 3 or 4 with an older, mature team. No quick fixes. You have to be patient to win that way, and maybe it won't work, but that's how he has to do it.

Unfortunately, you're right.

The guys in the incoming class were necessary or else we'd be playing with 7 guys this year.

This.

Let's face it. Unfortunately UT doesn't have a rich tradition of success in basketball. Kids aren't lining up to play for us.

Pearl had some success recruiting, but Bruce was also cheating, even if just a little. Would the recruits still have come here if he hadn't cheated? Who knows?

We didn't exactly land a big name coach. So if Martin is going to be successful here, he will have to first out coach his competition, before he can out recruit them IMO. It's that simple.

I'm not writing him off just yet. Let's give him some time to prove what he can do. Just like Serrano and Dooley, he will either be the next Pat Summit, or he will be gone.

3 miserable years of low scoring "defensive" bball until Bruce comes back with a fun system players want to play for. Play ball faster and score more and players will come.

Three years of waiting.

I'm trying to be cool and respectful about CCM's recruiting ability. I am hoping that he understands that TENNESSEE basketball NOW has a bigger fan base and has a higher bar than normal. I feel like he doesn't REALLY know that TENNESSEE is a MAJOR program.
Unless CCM has an AMAZING EYE for talent he doesn't need to OFFER players UNTIL his COMPETITORS start at least talking about him and inviting him to official visits. You can make the case that NO PLAYERS know how he will do on the court...Well, what happens if he DOES VERY WELL? My guess is that these kids who have already commited will not play very much...and HOW will these kids handle that situation.
BASICALLY CCM NEEDS to RECRUIT the BEST of THE BEST and only OFFER the best until it's a last RESORT.
Good Luck!

Point in case for the idiocy of our fan base.

I love the way most of you are acting.. It's not like all of those 4* and 5* guys that Pearl brought in here really ever panned out!!

Alaska- That could be the most retarded thing i've ever seen anybody post. Those "fast games" sure brought us multiple championships in while Bruce was here, didn't it.

Pretty sure this is what the Pearl haters envisioned when they said we could build on his legacy with someone even better. CCM doing work!!!!!!!!!!!

If you weren't happy with the success we had as a program during the Pearl era then you had delusional expectations.

Nice support. I'd like someone on here who is running their mouth to tell me what you see in the kids game that makes it a bad pickup. Somebody give something of substance. Most of you have no idea how a hs basketball player gains stars or recognition anyway.
BTW, Murray state would have whipped @ 8-9 teams in sec play in the last several years if they played in the league.

THis is largely unfair. I would compare him more to the success of Don Devoe. Meaning just be somewhat as competitive as the guy you followed.

the offer list. 10 out of 10 successful coaches can't be wrong.

Pretty sure Murray State is the team from Ky, whose success we want to emulate.

People want to talk about the talent that Bruce had in here, what about last year when he had his son playing while he had four 4* guys sitting the bench. Which means that "talent" is what Bruce saw and observed and used scholrships for. His 4* guys sat the bench, which means their talent didn't pan out the way he saw it. Also those guys will be starters on this years team.

Bunch of foolish posters here! You know absolutely nothing about this kid and your ready to trash him and fire the coach!!!! They watched him over the summer at AAU tourneys and liked what they saw. Did you watch him this summer? If all your going off is his offer list, its awful early to use that as a your reason for trashing the kid and the coach! Dooley did some of this and the same fools were ready to fire him as well. Its nice to have coaches that actually evaluate and recruit to his system and style. CBP forgot that and began star gazing like most of you and then he couldn't press or run his system because the players didn't fit! I will take a hard working kid over a 5* Hopson anyday!
