Yeah, after his first year people were saying that he'd never make the NCAAs and that his top recruiting class was a fluke.
Before last season people were saying that he'd never win an NCAA game and that he couldn't beat a top 25 team.
I dunno about Elite 8 wins, but I wouldn't bet against the guy, especially now that he's going to a conference where you won't get a 6 seed for going undefeated. It's pretty clear to me that he's improving as a coach.
I'm betting against him. Bad coaches don't "improve" all that much or Buzz Peterson would be a genius by now.
Yup.
I said he's improved. You're inserting the words "crazy" and "dramatic".

I would certainly hope that anyone can improve with more experience in any position. To take the position that a coach will never improve is ludicrous. He is an excellent recruiter, not a great floor coach. Even moving to another conference, he still will not have a problem winning as many good teams are leaving the conference. He probably should do more than he does with his talent, but he certainly can improve as time goes on. Talent will usually win for you, even with less coaching ability. I think part of the Memphis problem in the tournament is the lack of playing quality teams during the season.
It seems like you're saying that Pastner isn't a bad coach because a bad coach wouldn't improve as much as Pastner has. Your evidence is a two-point win over St. Mary's. If I'm reading that wrong, let me know.
The evidence speaks for itself.
No NCAA's first year.
NCAA as an AQ second year.
Wins conference outright and NCAAs as at-large third year.
Goes undefeated in conference, wins 30+ games, wins an NCAA game and finally beats a top 25 team in the fourth year.
All while continuing to recruit at an extremely high level. He's got a ways to go in certain coaching aspects, but it's only his fourth year on the job.
That's improvement.

I don't think any coach does. If your evidence of dramatic "improvement" is (barely) beating St. Mary's, that's about as shaky as it gets.
Amazing isn't it! Now he's hanging his hat on that. They have beaten one ranked team in 4 years! Wow! Such a great coach! I live in Memphis and 90% here know and say Pastner sucks as a coach.

I'm not a Memphis fan, but what has Cuonzo done that is better? Cuonzo has been coaching longer than Pastner and Pastner is still getting Top 5 classes in recruiting...just saying...:ermm:
Top 5 classes, 5 star recruits and every year their 2 star coach sits at home watching the finals. Zo would have Memphis in the final four with that talent. What a waste.
Next year we will have the most highly rated squad we have had at UT if you are a star gazer. We will have 2 five star and 3 four star players on this team. Let's see what we do with them.
Again, you guys (The Vols) were crowing about lack of "top 25 wins". Seems when Pastner gets one, someone tries to move the target.
That's all I'm trying to say.
I love it when pointing out a teams/fans weakness is labeled "Crowing" "moving the target".
Your guy hadnt beaten any top 25 teams. He has a strangle hold on one of the best basketball areas in the country, and just got his 1st win vs. a top 25 team. Normally dont respond to Memphis or Vandy dung, but your love for this guys is gettting creepy.
I don't "love" Pastner, and I'll be as vocal as anyone about his shortcomings.
But if you're going to "point out a weakness" like he hasn't beaten any top 25 teams (as if that has ANY meaning at all, as I've gone over before), then turn around and equivocate about him beating a top 25 team, you should be able to see how dumb that looks.
