2013 F Austin Nichols (Memphis Briarcrest)

Do you have a better measure for determining good teams?

Even more telling: Pastner has no wins against top 25 opponents at home in four years. Martin had three this year alone.

???? He's only had something like 2 games against top 25 teams at home. And those teams were VERY good top 25 teams, not like Ole Miss, etc.

LOL

There are much better ways to determine good teams than whether or not they are ranked in the polls when you beat them.

To me, the only way to measure success is to win games in the NCAA tourny. Conf Tourny wins are nice, but to me they don't mean squat.

Both coaches, Pastner and Counzo, are young coaches with a lot to learn. Both are going to achieve a high degree of success in the years to come.

As far as who is better right now, that is debatable on both sides. Counzo has more big wins, but he also has some very bad losses, and his recruiting is kinda suspect. Pastner has made the tourny multiple years and he has been pretty good with recruiting, but has only one win in the NCAA.

I think next year, the heat will be on both coaches. Pastner has a stellar recruiting class to go along with some solid upperclassmen, but if he doesn't improve on his last year (make it to the sweet 16), he will be under a lot of pressure from Tiger fans. I don't think his job will be in jeopardy though. Counzo, has his best team to date at UT, so he will be expected to make the NCAA tourny. If he barely misses the tourny, I think he will be able to make another year. If by the end of the year he has no shot at making the NCAA, then he will more than likely be gone.

This. This. This. The whole point of the regular season is to position your team as well as possible in the Tourney. Tourney success is more important than anything else, by a mile.

How many of those games did he get at home?

On second count, he's 6-8. My response was pointing out CCM's success against top-25 teams in his two seasons at Tennessee. He has played less than half at home (6 games). What difference does it make where they were played? He's 5-1 @ home, 1-4 on the road, & 0-3 on a neutral court.

1-7 away from TBA.

I think next year will be a good barometer for both coaches...if Martin can't make the dance next year, and have a top 25 team I'm not sure he ever can. On the flip side, if Pastner can't have a top 15, beat some ranked teams, and make a sweet 16 then I don't know that he ever can either.

Pastner has had ample time to allow for a judgment of his coaching. He's just OK.

The book is still out on Cuonzo.

We should finally have ample opportunities to beat a ranked team in conference, with both Louisville and UConn in the top 25. Cincy may sneak in as well.

How do you think they do next year in conference? Early prediction/expectation for the tigers?

Hard to tell until the Fall, when we know exactly what our roster will look like.

But right now I think top 3 probably behind Louisville, possibly behind UConn in the conference standings. 25 wins. Another 6 or better seed in the tournament, barring injuries. I'm confident that this team will be better than last year's team unless things break bad for us with recruits.

And 6-8 overall. The home games count too. You know that right? It's convenient that you choose to only highlight his road/neutral floor record, as if road struggles were some sort of anomaly in team sports reserved for only the most average of coaches.

No offense, but Martin's teams have exhibited road struggles. Not just in beating top 25 teams on the road or neutral sites, but mediocre teams such as UGA or Ole Miss on the road late in the season with a tourney berth on the line.

Maybe this won't be an issue when Martin has his full cadre of players, but I've seen the trend these last two years. Has his team playing out of their minds in TBA in February, then loses a head scratcher on the road.

I don't disagree one bit, but isn't that an entirely different conversation in relation to me expressing my satisfaction with his record against the top-25?

@GaryParrishCBS: Austin Nichols will not return to the Memphis basketball program, his father has told @CBSSports.

Jumping off a sinking ship.

This will get ugly

@GoodmanESPN: According to multiple sources, Memphis does not intend to release Austin Nichols.
