Honestly, it would matter if Jarnell was projected to be first round. It all depends on who declares. Jarnell's game will speak for itself in the end, but the NBA is enamored with "potential." Every smart player will look at the boards and see who is declaring. Scotty Hopson did that and (although I wanted him to stay and play for CCM) he made the best decision for himself. It was the weakest draft in years and the lockout had people staying in school. If Scotty were to be drafted, it would have been last year. Jarnell could average Jared Sullenger's numbers and someone that averaged Andre Drummond's numbers could go significantly higher. I'd say its a safe bet that Jarnell will test the draft waters after this season, but I hope he returns.
Here are some suggested guidelines to follow with Nichols. Take off the UT sunglasses (BTO may need a crowbar) and look at EVERYTHING from Nichols' POV:
1) Stop worrying about Duke and Coach K (reputation only). Distance and PT are facts. Wouldn't you want to official with K for a day?
2) Don't dismiss Auburn so lightly. Big fish, small pond appeals to some; Nichols is definitely "different". NBA drafts players, not schools. Sandy State in Yuma, AZ? NBA will find you. (I made that up) If he takes official to Auburn, go to DEFCON 4 (lowest). Should he and Hubbs visit together, UT could be in deep poop.
Pre-emptive strike would be to official them to UT ASAP; together could be game-changer. Don't wait for particular FB game (kids won't know the difference); get to 'em before Auburn (Auburn's thinking the same thing about UT).
3) Jarnell-card doesn't carry much weight. Argue stays-goes all day; still don't know. Sister? Same; not a real factor when you're deciding career/next 10 - 15 years of your life.
4) Vandy BB is 50%; distance and education 50%.
Only time I ever consider/hear UM/Nichols is when you guys bring it up. Like Duke, wait 'til you have something to actually worry about. Hubbs/Nichols same school is leap of faith; UT or Auburn? At least you're tied for 1st!
Not gonna' argue; just my outsider opinion.
Austin Nichols, No. 10 overall in the 2013 class, has cut his list of schools down from nearly 30 to six -- Auburn, Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
"It gets hard to handle all the phone calls and text messages. It was time to cut my list so I can focus on these schools," Nichols said.
The standout power forward at Briarcrest High School in Eads, Tenn., had an outstanding spring and summer and flew up the rankings from No. 29. Nichols is a skilled big man with a 7-foot-3 wingspan whose best asset is running the floor for quick baskets and rebounding. Nichols is also effective in the high post, where he is good on ball screens, can drive by opposing big men and finish with either hand, as well as in the low post, where he displays a soft baby hook.
He has earned the right to pick his school.
"Austin is looking for a situation where he can come in and be a factor sooner rather than later," Briarcrest coach John Harrington. "He is looking at returning rosters when he will be a freshman, recruits and style of play."
Here is what Nichols had to say about each of his finalists:
Auburn Tigers
"When it comes to Auburn, the competition of the SEC is very attractive," Nichols said. "I got to know Coach [Tony] Barbee when he was with Memphis. I have a good relationship with him and like what he is doing with the Auburn program."
Duke Blue Devils
Duke is high on his list and he was impressed with coach Mike Krzyzewski long before he led USA to the gold this year. "I love to watch [Coach K] coach and I am impressed how he transforms good players into great ones." However, he didn't watch much of the gold medal game because his sister was graduating from Memphis.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis is the local school in the race and Nichols has received an up close and personal look at the campus and program over the years. With his sister attending the school, he has been to many football and basketball games and knows a lot about the school. "Memphis has a great fan base and that excites me," he said, "I have attended practices and I love the passion which Coach [Josh] Pastner brings to practice."
Tennessee Volunteers
"I have taken two unofficial visits there and the campus is beautiful," he said. "My former teammate, Jarnell Stokes, who now plays at Tennessee, loves it and he tells me about it all the time. Coach Cuonzo Martin has really got that program going in the right direction."
Vanderbilt Commodores
"Vanderbilt attracts me because of the great competition of the SEC and outstanding academics of the school," he said. "The coaching staff there is great."
Virginia Cavaliers
"I've always liked the University of Virginia," he said. "Coach Tony Bennett is a great guy and continues to build the program up. Right now, I'm thinking of taking an official visit there Sept. 8."
Everything lately about duke, I just don't think he goes there. If he's serious about Memphis then they may be our biggest competition. Only positive thing I hear about duke is K, but in the end I think it's not enough considering what he's saying is important to him.
Only read Nichols' quotes...the "filler" by the author is the author's take.
Very true, however his dad said in a recent interview dukes talent/depth could lead to them being eliminated. Nichols keeps mentioning PT, and his coach just said it again in this article..."Austin is looking for a situation where he can come in and be a factor sooner rather than later," Briarcrest coach John Harrington. "He is looking at returning rosters when he will be a freshman, recruits and style of play."...duke doesn't fit that description at all.
I have seen him in the gym with his trainer a few times since last fall, and like I said before..... He likes sporting his Power "T" shirt. Just saying
He's doing everything he can to maintain some level of suspense. Nichols will be a Vol in November.
