2013 recruiting class....

Sugar coat it all you want, Jones has his work cut out for him. Drink the Jones-aid and be happy it's a new day at UT. But once it gets serious and the recruits make their decisions, don't start the excuse making when it is not as good as you predict now. It will not be Jones' fault. Hart and Cheek made the program's bed first when they tried to make it work with Dools last season and it failed miserably; then by botching the search. Jones is walking into a mess. So if he pulls out a 5.6-5.7 average for all recruits he has done as well as could be expected. That's a mid-high 3 for you star watchers.

And based on Rivals ratings and recruiting classes over the past half dozen years that gets you a 7-12 season W/L finish in the SEC if it continues past one class. So we will learn what the best staff in America can do by early February 2014. Can they get more from less on the field and capitalize on it with the next class, or will it be Dools version 2.0?

Keeping it real.

Solid Post :good!:

CBJ will put together a respectable class. It is the age of big time players that make classes and teams. There is enough name recognition @ UT to pull solid players, but the real deal is getting that one or two guys in a class that are difference makers. A top 30 class with one big time play maker is a success this year. I hope he is on D we need it. GBO

I'm guessing you guys don't follow the recruiting forum much? We have a lot of really solid athletes that are leaning TN (WR North, RB Green, S Bell) that are going to wait til NSD, and any one of those three (among several other possibilities) would make our ranking jump considerably. We might not have a signing class like Michigan or USC, but I think CBJ and co. will do fine, and like others said, we'll pull a 10-20 class. Our staff is composed of some really solid recruiters.

ok lets say that CBJ has a break-out year next season and the team goes 8-4..then in 2014 if recruiting is even better then this yr they have a shot at winning 9-10 games and then in 2015 they have a chance maybe 11 wins and contention for a SEC title and then by 2016 they are contenders for a NC..is this far fetched at this point??

WTF, we should be suing that idiot DD for his buyout money, since his was a clear case of malpractice. Look as hard as you want to find some plan to recruit game changers, Patterson being the exception. This has to be the slowest team in TN history. Either he learned nothing under Saban or he is guilty of malpractice.

A contract is a contract is a contract. DD did a better job than too many here are willing to give him credit for. He just didn't win on the field. Time and again breaks went against his team. He made questionable calls as many coaches do, Les Miles comes to mind. But because his team lost, these calls were magnified by impatient fans. We came ridiculously close to beating some good teams this recent season but again breaks went against us.
Now, the man is gone, gone, got it? Gone. Let it go and focus on the present and the future. Beating and cattle prodding a dead horse does not, not, not indicate you're a brave and gallant person. Now it's BJ's turn. We signed a 6 year contract with him because Dave Hart knows it will take time to right the Volship. He thinks and we all hope he has a man who can do just that. There is no magic wand to undo the mess that began back in the late Fulmer era. DD is gone, please stop bringing him back purely out of malice and nothing else. We should be better than that. Continuing such foolish behavior just adds to the ammo of ESPN and everyone else who see us as a laughingstock already.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't feel too great about how this class is shaping up. We have had quite a few kids decommit (which was somewhat expected with turnover). You can't sell the brand of Tennessee to these kids because the Tennessee they know goes 5-7 and gets beat by Vandy and Kentucky. The sky is obviously not falling but I believe this is a much tougher job than it used to be and I'm not going to be surprised if we don't pull a top 25 class. We have a serious need for talent on the defensive side of the ball and I hope that I'm wrong. Can anyone share if the decommits were TN parting ways or the players decisions? I really liked to size of Campbell as a LB, texas steals another good one in my opinion (even though coach mac underperforms every year).

When you figure in the arrests, drop outs, failures, dismissals, and busts, Kiffin's only recruiting class could be the worst in UT history.

We are not doing to bad Rivals has us use at 41 but our average is 3.33 which would put use in the top Twenty. We only have 14 recuits. Let see what Butch and his boys can put together.

I haven't been paying much attention to recruiting. How's it shaping up?

Might find this interresting...and good encouraging news...

Tennessee Volunteers Football: Volquest.com

The Jones way

In less than two weeks, head coach Butch Jones has made a dozen in home visits. He's hosted two official visitors. He's landed his first commitment and he's hired a staff.

Georgia tailback plans visit

Tennessee clearly wants to sign a couple of running backs in the class of 2013. One tailback that Vol running backs coach Jay Graham has continued to recruit despite his commitment to another SEC school is Alpharetta, Ga. tailback Peyton Barber

Vols pursuing Bellamy

Chamblee, Georgia defensive end Davin Bellamy has been committed to Florida State since mid-August, but a new defensive staff for the Seminoles has him fielding phone calls. Is he truly listening to what others are saying?

"Yes I definitely am," Bellamy said. "(Tennessee) wanted me from before I committed. I'm going to take my officials and Florida State knows that. I'm just trying to figure out where I'm going to visit and see who still wants me."

Thigpen after four-star linebacker

Trey Johnson was committed to Auburn until this past November when he broke off his pledge because of the firing of Gene Chizik and the entire Tiger coaching staff. One of those former Auburn coaches is now at Tennessee, Tommy Thigpen, and has put Tennessee in the race for the four-star linebacker

I really want what some of you are smoking. I have not been on this site in a long time, but the optimism over recruiting is noteworthy. According to rivals, we are #45. What in the world makes some people believe that we are going to end up in the top 20? Every year I have heard rumors of big surprises on signing day, and every year they turn out to be wishful thinking. Are some of you still holding on to your Enron stock,.....just knowing it will recover someday? :loco:

If you cared to read or do ANY research you would see that the recruiting rankings place a heavier emphasis on quantity over quality. Right now we only have 14 commits. Once we start getting more commitments our ranking will rise and we will, imo, end up in the 15-20 range.

Some latest...

Florida receiver talks offer

An always fertile recruiting ground, Jones and his staff have reached out and offered multiple players from Florida in the last two weeks and that includes wide receiver James Clark from New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

"I was just getting in from a workout and I had a phone call from Tennessee and that's when they let me know it was the new staff coming in and they wanted to offer me," Clark said. "It's all new. This was the first time hearing from them."

Offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian was on the other end of the line extending the offer and he let the 5-foot-11, 170-pound receiver know that he was impressed with what he saw just a few days before when watching his film.

"He let me know that he watched my film and that he was very impressed by it and it's what led to the offer," Clark said. "That's a big time SEC school coming in and with the new staff coming in they spent the weekend watching film and I was the one he was impressed by so he wants me."

With offer, JUCO DB plans on visiting

Garden City Community College cornerback Riyad Jones is planning on enrolling at his new school in January. But before Jones decides on a school he hopes to see one last option on Tennessee after the Vols entered the picture in the last week. For more on Jones and his ties to the Vols get inside Volquest.com.

Hopefully, they can put together a class that is top 5-6 or better in the SEC. Don't really care about the national rankings. I just don't want us to fall any further behind in the talent gap than we already are.

I am more concerned about seeing how the new coaching staff coaches up the players we have rather than getting a top recruiting class. Dooley seemed to find a way to coach players down. Get the best class we can and then work with what you already have and what you bring in.

Remember how in shambles the class was when Kiffin left? Dooley worked a bit of magic in the short time he had. Expect CBJ to do the same and finish top 15. Relax we got a while before NSD.

I think that's very unlikely. Getting into the Top 25 at this point would be an achievement. Top 15 is probably out of reach.

This is the bad part about transitions. It's pretty rare for a school (even a top program) to have a good class after firing a coach. The new coach normally improves dramatically with the 2nd and 3rd classes.

Our current terrible ranking is almost entirely due to having only 15 commits right now. Even filling our remaining spots with mediocre talent will have us a much more reasonable ranking. I think we will do much better than that and land a few big recruits and finish in the 10-20 range. Calm down and breathe.

You're right that the numbers get affected by # of commits, but you can normally get a better sense of how a class will turn out by looking at the "average commit ranking". In this case, even when you go by the average (rather than the points system), Tennessee is ranked #32 by Scout.

Let's face it, this year is going to be rough. If Butch gets us into the Top 25, he's doing a great job.

It sucks we'll have an average class at best, but this is how it normally is during transition years. Saban's first class at Bama was ranked #22 by Scout.
