2013 TN PG Darius Thompson

I admit I follow football a lot more than basketball. From what I've read from BTO,he seems to think he's a take.I was being a little sarcastic about him starting at point next yr.I just don't think Golden is consistent or good at the point.

Golden is not a true PG, but a true freshman isn't taking over for him at this point. I would love to be able to turn this team over to an experienced PG and let Golden play the 2, but we don't have that luxury. Partly Pearl's fault for what he left although Pearl was hoping for Jones. Partly Martin's fault for not finding one by now.

From what I was talking about earlier in the thread about Desonta Bradford from Humboldt...

http://www.jacksonsun.com/article/2.../Humboldt-holds-off-Wartburg-reach-title-game

Fast forward to the 20 second mark and watch from there...Desonta is #1 with the ball
I know I may be in the minority but, I would be more excited with a Desonta Bradford commitment than a Thompson commitment. I have seen both play and like Bradford a bit more. I feel he is more athletic and fluid at the point guard position than Thompson, great defender too.

I can hear it now. In the year 2018 we struggle at the point. Somehow Pearl will be the blame.

Really! At some point Cuonzo will have to be held accountable for not signing a true point guard. This is his third class and no point guard, at least highly rated point guard, is on the radar.

Why does the PG have to be highly rated? Shane Larkin at Miami was going to George Washington before ending up at Miami and look at him? Rankings are just that RANKINGS

Darius Thomas will be a good pickup
My point was mainly directed toward those that continue to blame Coach Pearl for the roster. Cuonzo at some point will have to take ownership of the roster. As to a highly ranked point guard, odds of success go up with a higher ranking. Sure a lower ranked player may turn out great but the odds are not as good.

I am a big Cuonzo fan and desperately want him to succeed but I also hold him accountable for the performance of the team. I also liked Coach Pearl and he's not coming back so to continually blame him is counterproductive.

It doesn't really do good to blame either for the roster but you can't give Cuonzo a fair shake without evaluating the roster. IMO, both Cuonzo and Bruce have both had a hand in the roster. But I don't think you can criticize Martin nearly as much as Pearl.

Pearl - left Martin with 7 scholarship players, most of which were primary pine riders to that point. McBee, Maymon, Jordan McRae, Trae, Kenny Hall, Swiperboy, Cam Tatum. Result = signing 5 guys in a short time, which a few of which were questionable takes at the SEC level.

Martin - a couple questionable "takes" early in the recruiting season since his first class where he wasn't able to be selective.

I think starting with this season, the roster becomes solely Martin's responsibility. There should be no roster excuses in 2013-14 and no recruiting excuses from that point on.

George Washington? I thought he was committed to DePaul?

This about sums it up. Martin was not given much, based on experience or with the PG position. Martin had to take some bodies, although he did reach with a couple. Martin, though, had the chance to fix the PG situation last year and failed to do so. The problem is he is one year too late because we needed to groom a PG this year for a strong push next year with Golden maybe at the 2 for some minutes. But now with a true freshman PG, Golden will have to play 30 minutes a game. I just do not like Golden at PG- he is slow on defense and makes poor open court decisions.

I think all it will take is a competent back up in 2013-14. A pg that can handle the ball and defend. Doesn't have to be great, just solid in those two areas.

That would do two things:

1. Put pressure on Trae to step his game up every night and be more consistent.

2. Allow us to play someone else at point when/if Trae is having a bad night.

Judging by how we fared when Trae played bad or was out with injury this year, I'd say if we had a backup pg like that, we'd have 24 or so wins this year and would be dancing.

I agree.

You also can't blame Pearl for two players leaving early for the draft. He had a chance to convince them to stay and for whatever reason was unable to.

Just curious, who is the pg that Martin had a chance on last year and missed? The kid at Vandy??

One or both were going to leave early even if Pearl stayed. Personally I think both would have left. Scotty wanted to go pro and I doubt a fourth year was going to help him get there. Tobias was going as well because his stock was likely higher than it would ever be due to the possible lockout that kept a lot of guys from declaring.

So yeah, fair or not, that's how Pearl left it.

This today from Rob Lewis on possibly adding Thompson...

"Yes, they are full right now including the three signees. If they add Thompson or someone else they would have to cut someone from the roster or somehow part ways with a signee. I don't know what they will do, if forced to guess I would say they would try to part ways with Landry but that's speculation on my part."

Thought Landry had already signed his LOI.? Or does that not matter?

Parting with Landry would absolutely be the best case scenario. IMO we add Thompson then hopefully Lyle next year and landry won't really see the floor at all...so let's part with him and use that scholarship for someone that'll see the floor. We are in on some talented guys in 14, I'd prefer to have the extra scholarship and bring in 5 at least.
