What are your thoughts on him as a player?
I think you are confused that the SEC has limited all schools to sign a hard maximum of 25 each year. They can't oversign the 25 max, which some were doing, knowing that they signed some academic casualties.
But, if Bama only has 20 scholarships available, I am pretty sure they can sign 25, thinking that there will be attrition in the offseason. I am fairly confident that still happens. Coaches just let the numbers work out.
You have to be careful with that practice because if you do it every year, something is bound to come up. But, if you do it every once in a while, knowing guys will leave, then I don't have a problem with it.
Thompson?
My first concern, way back, was he doesn't fit the mold of what we really need. The big issues with trae are quickness and ball handling, this guy I don't think is much if any of an upgrade over trae in those areas.
He's a very good shooter, and a great passer, but from everything i've heard his weaknesses are his quickness and ball handling. He "sounds" (I haven't seen him) like a lanky 2 guard that we once again are trying to make a PG.
He's being recruited by the big boys (nc state, and other ACC school were getting involved), but they all are recruiting him at the 2. So...my impression is a very good combo guard. The fact HE wants to play PG tells me he's gonna work to improve the PG areas so that's a good thing, I also like that he's a Tennessee boy (and may spurn Vandy for us!!!).
He's athletic, and has a nice shot...if he can improve those areas he'll be a good one, he's definitely a take.

Say what you will but I think Tennessee defeating VU and the way we are playing now came into play. JMO.
Here's what gets me with this Thompson deal...people wanna gripe about Martin's ability to recruit. Yet now we're saying don't take a guy who borderline top 150 and being offered and recruited by some very good schools?
Thompson is a very similarly rated player as Richardson, I'm not getting it.
Part of the reason is because they prob think we have a good chance at getting talented prospects in 2014.
So is our chances high here for Thompson? CCM needs to show lots of love to this kid. I've seen videos of this kid and he can shot it up. We really need some scores for our bench, and Hubbs and Thompson is a great start. We land this kid and I really, really like where our program is going.
The knock on the quickness issue is a little misunderstood. He's not a 5'10 jitterbug/slasher. He is 6'3...he is fast, but his size doesn't lend itself to "looking" fast. Extremely intelligent, both in the classroom and on the court, exceptional passer, quick release shot. To top it all off, the kid is a LEADER. He is an extremely hard worker. He has improved so much in the last 2-3 years, it is amazing. He went from a prospect that appeared headed for Belmont or another school of that type at the beginning of his Jr year to absolutely blowing up this year.
His length makes him a great defender, which could negate some quickness issues by making smaller guards have to take the "long way around" in order to beat him off the dribble.
I think he is a no brainer to take if he will come. He gets a year to gain experience, spot play some, and hone his craft backing up Golden. By his 2nd year, he will be ready to take over the role.
