2013 TN PG Darius Thompson

I've watched the kid play this year. His team was not playing real well when I saw them, then he hit another level and it was over. Like others have said, he may not look fast, but he can definitely move.

That's fine, but I don't see how one has to cost the other. If we lose Q (seems most likely to me) then we're replacing him with a very solid player.

IMO a 3* top 150 who plays a position of need, and is from the state of Tennessee isn't a guy you pass on, jmo.

We still will lose at least McRae, golden, Maymon and Edwards so that at least 4 spots for 2014 class. Personally, I don't like having to take more than 4 in a class, creates an uneven roster.

I don't disagree with this at all. It just bothers me that we signed a pg already.

Made in January.

Looks good to me! I saw somebody describe him as herky jerky, but I don't see it. He looks very smooth and decisive to me. Also, his shooting looks pretty good. Diggin' the no-look passes too. Very cool.

So any idea where this would leave us with Landry? Landry is a jitter bug distributer type it seems. Thompson is a combo guard that wants to play PG. Seems like one of the two will not be happy.

The staff isn't sold on Landry, it's really that simple. So say they don't take Thompson, miss on any Ellie PGs in next years class, where does that leave you heading into the 2014 season?

With Landry as your only scholarship PG.

I'm sure the staff isn't judging Landry on his mishandling by fuller.
The kid averaged 11/6 at bob Jones Jr season. According to his past coach his upside was his handle.
Martin may just be learning a little about recruiting. Not wanting to get caught with his a$$ in the wind again when golden graduates.

You're right but what if we hit on all of them and we have 3 pgs with a shortage of scholarships to give out since we have 3 pgs. I figure we will just cut someone but for some reason it still bothers me.

I would agree, if it wasn't for the fact he was awhile in AAU ball as well. He just hasn't improved, I'm guessing his freshman and sophomore numbers are probably better or very similar to his junior stats at BJ.

I agree with your second part though. Sure, we're in on Lyle, but one thing CCM probably learned with nichols is never feel comfortable until the ink is dry. If he misses Lyle and doesn't have another elite PG he can snag, he'd be left with Landry as the only scholarship PG on the 2014-2015 roster.

I don't see how it's a shortage of scholarships. 1 PG, and 2 guys who can play the 1 or 2.

Having too many PGs is a problem i would love to have for a change. Also though, Thompson and Lyle are 2 guys 6'4" + that can play the 2 guard, so it's not like you have 3 guys <6' who's only position is PG.

Those guys give you versatility and CCM loves that.

The knock on the quickness issue is a little misunderstood. He's not a 5'10 jitterbug/slasher. He is 6'3...he is fast, but his size doesn't lend itself to "looking" fast. Extremely intelligent, both in the classroom and on the court, exceptional passer, quick release shot. To top it all off, the kid is a LEADER. He is an extremely hard worker. He has improved so much in the last 2-3 years, it is amazing. He went from a prospect that appeared headed for Belmont or another school of that type at the beginning of his Jr year to absolutely blowing up this year.

His length makes him a great defender, which could negate some quickness issues by making smaller guards have to take the "long way around" in order to beat him off the dribble.

I think he is a no brainer to take if he will come. He gets a year to gain experience, spot play some, and hone his craft backing up Golden. By his 2nd year, he will be ready to take over the role.
Perfect analysis. I couldn't have said it any better.

Anthony Grant at Blackman tonight to see Darius play.

I was at the game and I saw a guy decked out in Alabama gear. I was not sure who he was.... I guess I know now. Darius had about 6 dunks on our team last night and they won by 43.

It just really is not fair that our District has to go and play a Murfresboro District with 1200 more student than we have, but oh well.

Saw this kid play last night.... Good height.... Needs to bulk up.... Great court vision and passer.... Needs to improve ball handling a bit.... Great outside shot and has great jumping ability.... Not that quick and lacks intensity on D and quickness to play man to man.... However he's a smart defensive player... Sign him up...

Not tryin to sound argumentative but I didnt think CJ Watson was an elite athlete. I would take a CJW in every class though

I agree. Thompson's build and ball handling remind me a good bit of Kendall Marshall. Marshall wasn't the absolute quickest guy on the court, but he was the best pure point guard I've seen in a while. I think Thompson's court vision is great, which gives him the potential to develop into a guy like Marshall. Except Thompson jumps and shoots better. (All opinion, of course, looking at as many senior clips and write ups as I could find.)

If he can develop into 80% the passer that Marshall was/is, sign him up.

I thought the UF game was interesting in light of some of the debate in this thread about preferring smaller, quicker PGs. UF has a series of those types of players and they had some real problems against UT's superior height on the perimeter--mostly with McRae. Now, I'm not saying that I definitively prefer taller PGs because Tywon Lawson was a smaller but incredible guard and we could go back and forth all day with great smaller guards and great bigger guards because talent, after all, is the most important factor. The reason I bring up the UF game is that I think it is important to have a mix and UF had no answer for McRae. Having a 6'4" PG would be a real luxury, especially if he is as talented as some rumor him to be. I sure hope Thompson is a Vol!
