2014 CFN Preview - More Rocky Times?

Easy money. We've never lost 8 games in a season. Ever. Tennessee and Ohio State are the only schools that can say that.

We are talented enough to beat a USC, UGA, UF, or Ole Miss, but we are young enough to lose one against USU, ASU, Vandy, Mizzou, and Kentucky.

We have to coach smart, play smart, and have a couple breaks go our way this year.

I don't see us winning 7 games (not counting bowl) with this schedule.

I agree that this is easy money but I have never betted and don't know how

Here is where he lost all credibility:

The talent level hasn’t been bad, and the schedule hasn’t been a killer over the years – at least by SEC standards

What part of Aub, Ala, GA, Mizzou, OR, USCe is cupcake? We also played FL when they were good BEFORE they imploded. Vandy was no cup cake either.

And this year is soooo much easier with: Ala, OK, Ole Miss, USCe, GA, not that FL, Mizzou and Vandy will be slouches.

If butch is the right coach, 7 wins will appear.

This post is exactly what's wrong with so many posters on VN these days. You're giving no context to what Butch has to work with and putting an arbitrary win total as the only measuring stick to this season and Butch's ability to coach. I believe Butch is the right guy, but I also understand that he has a roster full of young, unproven talent, totally new personnel on the offensive line, and group of guys on the D line that probably wouldn't play at all if they were on 10 of the 14 SEC teams, a defense that's been putrid by any statistical model you use led by a coordinator that has a questionable resume' at best, and we're playing one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Yet you are guaranteeing 7 wins, which means you probably think we win 8 or 9. My guess is if we start out 3 - 6, which is entirely possible, you'll be one of the morons screaming Butch needs to go, or you'll just vanish because you lack to intestinal fortitude to come on VN and admit you lacked any sense of objectivity in July. I for one hope its the latter.

You'll get your 7, trust me.

Yep, because our superhero legacies are coming and all of em are really gonna crack some heads and dominate the SEC from day one...... and they're gonna get in everyone's faces, talk some trash and not one of em is even so much as gonna get a single penalty flag thrown on em, blah, blah, blah.....right Nation??

His legacy theory will go down as one of the most asinine of all time.

I'm big on the legacy players making a mark and contributing to UT's return to being relevant again and challenging for championships ..... over time, not beginning in August. Somebody needs to convince this guy that our legacy freshmen are named Bates, Wharton, Berry and Kelly, not Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and Hulk.

I don't see it that way. I actually see just the opposite, I think your post is what's wrong with VN. We could have won 7 last year but CBJ didn't have to, he had a class loaded with legacies and he knew it.

Yep, context is just a fancy word for ifs and buts, who cares!? It's the off season and folks should be enthusiastic about this team.

My guess is if we start out 3 - 6, which is entirely possible, you'll be one of the morons screaming Butch needs to go, or you'll just vanish because you lack to intestinal fortitude to come on VN and admit you lacked any sense of objectivity in July. I for one hope its the latter.

Yep, I will vanish because this place can get just plain stupid once we are 3-6. Not gonna come here and try to justify anything, not gonna scream for Butch to go. Objectivity in July? I am stating my expectations and I see nothing wrong with that. Certainly things can happen and maybe CBJ doesn't get it done this season but that doesn't mean right now I can't be optimistic. I can be also be optimistic without having place anything into context, I believe CBJ can get it done and I believe he will get it done this season because he has to.

Don't get me wrong - think they will be ballers and are great for recruiting and tradition. But to say they will play better than the rest of the non-legacy members of the team because they simply want it more is an insult to the rest of the team and doesn't make much sense on its own imo.

If not for the other inaccuracies (talent level, Ferguson still being with the team), I would probably take the part about strength of schedule as really subtle sarcasm, but I guess "STAFF" was being serious. Overall, I thought the article was a decent assessment, but it was wrong about some strange things IMO.

I used to think things like this was easy money...and then UT had back-to-back losing seasons.

ooooh. You used the internet bully card. In the words of nation himself "This is a message board...." If you don't like it, then don't post.

And speaking of posting, you cry for someone to mind their own business yet this is your first post on this topic. You should probably heed your own word first before telling someone else what to do.

I feel like a broken record..... You are wrong about the talent, dead wrong. We have the talent to beat anyone on the schedule except OU and Bama and I think that a perfect storm will arise and we get OU. OUs talent is not much greater then ours. If I'm wrong about my legacy theory then I'm wrong, I won't try and make excuses. I won't be wrong and you can guarantee these kids are hittin the weights right now with only one thing on their mind...
Getting UT back to the top. Attendence will be the highest in years, Florida will go down at Neyland, and the world will see that a giant has awoken and is climbing out of the depths to recapture what his rightfully his. SEC dominance and a lot of rah rah rah like KB likes to say.

I don't consider 7-8 wins dominating the SEC, which I said is my reasonable expectations. They will leave there mark, they will be remembered .

Honestly, I far prefer your unbridled optimism to the uber negativity some guys bring on here. Just think it has to be infused with some reality for it to have credibility.

Fwiw, I think there are 7 wins on the schedule and if a few things break in the right direction we could do even more and be the surprise team of the SEC this year. I guess where I differ with you fundamentally is I think 7 wins or more, given some positive unforeseen developments is POSSIBLE whereas you seem to think, regardless of any other factors, that 7 or more wins is PROBABLE.

Either way, we're both Vol fans and want great success for this year's team.

The emphasis added is mine. I had to read it 3 or 4 times because I was just... well... stunned, and in trying to pick out which specific part I wanted to respond to, I couldn't make up my mind. So I said screw it and did it all.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to step out and say it, really I do. However, "OUs talent is not that much greater then (than) ours" is a statement that is completely devoid of context. If I concede that their talent and ours is equal (and I don't... but hypothetically speaking) our talent is still young, unproven, and untested. If you think 6 weeks or 2 months in a college weight program is the same as being in one many semesters, you're just dead wrong. And it will show when we play OU, Bama, etc.

I believe that in time these kids will fulfill their vast potential and, with the help of future big-time classes and stability in the coaching staff, raise the Tennessee football team back up to where it is supposed to be. Could that "perfect storm arise" and we beat OU at their place this year with like 40% of our roster as underclassmen? I suppose anything is possible. I think that there is a better chance that I print out your post after the game, frame it, and hang it on the wall next to my pictures of the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and the Loch Ness Monster.
