2014 JUCO Center Stephen Hurt

Even if we've got to go up against some stiff competition to land him, I personally think we should be the team to beat for Hurt.

It seems that way but after Nichols last year I hope CCM has learned his lesson.

With Stokes being the exception every Vol Bball coach has had difficulty pulling top level recruits out of Memphis, even Pearl.

True Truth. Jerry Green probably had the most success. IIRC he pulled Tony Harris and a couple of other decent players from there. But like you said, for the most part UT has always struggled to get guys from there.

If CCM is here for a while, he will start to bring in a guy every couple of years or so. IMO

O'neill got Harris.

I believe Kevin O'Neil had a hand in getting Tony, but I also heard that Tony was leaving the city. It is very difficult to get basketball players out of Memphis, especially the years where there are only 2-3 high level prospects. We have a coach who can do it though.

Football is where we need to get back into The Memphis/Shelby County area. Fulmer had success there.

Good point about Football. Getting that program back, will help with relationships in that area.

Was thinking the same thing
I was thinking Turman would be the 2nd choice.
Beast with the ball but misses a lot of passes (from watching his game tapes).
If he could improve his hands a ton, he'd be a tall maymon type.

O'neil left in 1997 and Tony Harris came in 1997. So yeah, O'neil recruited but Green was the coach when he signed right? not splittin hairs, just making sure I remembered right.

Correct. O'Neill signed him, but Green had to re-recruit him after the coaching change. So, both get credit I guess.

"One name that's not been mentioned as much lately due to the fact that July is the culmination of the high school hoops offseason is junior college prospect Stephen Hurt. The Vols haven't forgotten about him though. Martin has made two trips personally to see Hurt this month at a couple of different junior-college events, a clear signal that he remains high on the wish list."

Any idea if location is any factor with this kid. Does he have family in Murfreesboro that might help us get him on the hill?

I'm pretty sure his family still lives in Murfreesboro because that's where he went back to for summer, so I would definitely think that's an advantage for us. I would be surprised if we don't land him, Martin has really made him probably his biggest priority, and I'm not sure any other head coaches have been following him around like Martin has.

That's one reason the Austin commit is huge, it'll let Martin be a fixture at Hurt and Looney's games going forward, while other head coaches are trying to split their time between different places.

preciate it. Starting to like our chances.... add him, London, and Kasongo/Turman and that is a solid class. IMO

Steal Looney or Black in place of Kasongo/Turman and probably one of the best in TN history.? anybody think of a better basketball class?
