2014 JUCO Center Stephen Hurt

Yes, he averaged like 14pts 11rbd against UK, Memphis and Ole Miss iirc. Very Stokesesque game, but with a bit more height and a better FT shooter.
Would have gone high major without the 300lb problem.
A year under Forbes and 2 under Christopher, this kids a high second rounder. (at least)

Yea he's really worked on that weight. Forbes said they were trying to get him to walk on at UT when he was still here because they saw the potential there. Hopefully he ends up here after all, perfect answer to our post issues next year IMO.

Hurt making an Unofficial visit this weekend. Go Vols!

Yup, expected to be here tomorrow. Wow, nice to have good news around the program again. I don't expect him to commit, but if he did that would be huge. Lock him up early, and let him concentrate on his season.

Great news

Hurt/Cofer/Cornish before July?

That would be absolutely fantastic.

Hurt will start next year.

Would be great. If they could somehow add Mitchell....that give the staff the luxury of going all in on Looney, Lyle and Black. If you miss, you have great players already committed, but odds are if you can go all out for those guys you'll land one.

Class is shaping up very nicely, and agree about Hurt starting next year, unless for some reason Stokes returns. And for those who are star gazers, Hurt is the equivalent to a high 4* IMO, will be in the running for NJCAA POY.

Couldn't agree more.

If stokes returns you would see hurt at the 5 and stokes at the 4 I think. Both would start.

Would be a very slow frontcourt, that would have trouble guarding any stretch 4, but it's possible. You'd definitely have options with Cofer and Davis being 4s, along with Hurt and Stokes.

I enjoy reading your insights into the bball program.

While Stokes is a really nice college player, the skill set he's shown to date doesn't strike me as crossing over to the NBA. Similar in size to a Charles Barkley except not as athletic and no where near the leaper.

Is there a similar player in the NBA (maybe Charles Oakley but I don't think Stokes is as tall or powerful) and do you see him playing at that level or would he be leaving early for a european job?

Jmo but I think stokes is going pro whether his game is ready or not.

Not sure how well his game translates to the nba but I'm no expert. Personally, I hope he has a great year, enters the draft, gets picked in the first round and makes it as an nba player.

I hope the best for him also as he appears to be a quality individual.

I just can't think of a similiar nba player to compare him with. 3" or 4" taller and I think he'd be a great nba center prospect. NBA guys are so long and quick that unless he demonstrates an ability to elevate some more I suspect he will struggle to score in the paint. To date he's not shown much at the NCAA level outside of the paint.

He's got a similiar body to Carl Malone (still 2" shorter)but not the jump shot, at least not shown it yet.

Best comparison is probably Dejuan Blair, who is on the Spurs. Similar build and style, Stokes actually is probably about an inch taller than Blair. Zach Randolph is used as a comparison alot, but ZBO has a midrange game that stokes has yet to show.

He's a lot taller than Barkley who measured 6'31/2 when he got to the league. However Charles had a skill set and explosiveness that Stokes can only dream about.

This. Blair is the best comparison.

No offense to Stokes, I'm a fan. But ZBo also has a low-post game. Jarnell missed way too many bunnies last season. I think it's a good comparison simply based on the fact that they're both relatively unathletic and play below the rim, but Stokes hasn't figured out how to overcome that stuff and be an effective scorer around the basket.

I agree completely. I mentioned Zbo because I've seen the comparison made, and don't really agree with it outside of their measurements being similar. I think Blair is a fair comparison, but Blair averaged about 17 & 12 and was drafted in the 2nd round. I think stokes will go 2nd round and will find a home as a rebounder much the way Blair has.

Jmo

Good call. Hopefully he can make a career on that in the NBA. Nothing wrong with being a role player, especially if you're lucky enough to play for a contender.

We need a big guy like him and only have three or four on our offer board. Bama wants him bad so hopefully this weekend we will become the favorite.

Spoke with Stephen Hurt this evening, following up on his unofficial yesterday. Nothing major to report, he seems pretty intent on taking his time with things with all the opportunities coming his way.

Did say that his parents were with him for the trip and UT made a strong impressions. Seems safe to say the Vols are going to be a factor here all the way but he's going to have a ton of options.

Indiana offered on Friday, Arizona as well and Kansas called for the first time this week.
