2021 College World Series Game Discussion Thread: Bracket 1 and Bracket 2 (excluding Tennessee)

I'll pass, but admit to watching Yogi jump into Don Larsen's arms after a perfect game in the '56 World Series.

Walked in the door from school that day to see the end of that game. Never forget it. I loved the Dodgers then (don't now) and hated the Yankees (still do). I was PO'd the Evil Empire beat my Dodgers.

Probably best auto I ever got...got eddie George jevon kearse and Steve McNair...but got mike Singletary thru Facebook from his wife that was Like Christmas in july when I opened it...
True story. My son was 7 went to cincy game and went to the pro shop. Had a display with laser autographed baseballs except 10 that were signed by pete rose for the year of selling them.all thes balls were in like crown royal bags and must have been a thousand of them in the display and I told my son go pick one and they opened up at the counter to pay for it for they were sealed up and they had to open and the girl screamed out you got one. the whole place was packed and gave him an ovation. got the certification and all the documentation to go with it. was a good investment for a 7.50 purchase.

About 10 years ago, my wife found some page on Facebook selling Chinese knockoff jerseys for like $22. I ordered one, fully expecting it to be a “Morphy” “Brives” jersey once I actually got it(if I ever even got it)
Long story short, it shipped and was flawless! So I went buck wild and ordered a bunch more.😎
GBO!!

Holy crapola!!!

I saw the Big Red Machine quite a few times kick my Cardinals ass in both St. Louis and Cincy. All of those guys are among my all time favorite players, especially Bench and Morgan. Walked with Morgan from a fundraiser in SF to a theater for a play, he was so nice.

Rose was my 2nd favorite player behind Brock until the betting thing. He is a friend of mine’s godfather. Her Dad was a pitcher for the Red’s back then.

I watched the Baltimore Orioles beat the Big Red Machine's ass all over the lot in one world series.

Its been a long day, I can’t stay up and watch this game, I’ll have to tape it. Don’t anyone text me and tell me the score, ok? 😎

I bet it was! I just can’t help but feel that the game is different now.
GBO!!

It is. For one thing, the umps honored the strike zone in the rule book. They don't any more. It makes me angry they get away with calling any strike zone they want. It changes the game.

Another huge difference is the attitude of pitchers. No one ever crowded the plate when Drysdale or Gibson was pitching. Today, hitters stand right on the plate, and pitchers won't even brush them back. That changes the game a lot.

Also, there was more emphasis on base running. Jackie Robinson was a hell of a baserunner. Lou Brock and others stole lots of bases. You just don't see the great base stealers any more. It's a power game now. Strike outs, walks, and homers. Unless you're a lead-off hitter, no one wants a guy that gets a lot of singles. Not sure Rose would be considered a great player today.

the club house manager for the mets down at spring training in Tampa/St Pete was always getting good tips for food, laundry etc. Dave Kingman was the best tipper and nicest fellow in the world. He said the biggest cheapest prick in the world was the highest paid player aka George Foster. He/Mets hated him once they got him.

Me too. I have a memory of seeing the record Dinger live on tv, but who knows if I actually did. I still have this SI issue. I also have a bat signed by Henry.

I bet you did, it was on tv all the time during those last couple weeks. Every time he walked to the plate ya just knew he was gonna get one, then it was he only needs one…baseball gods, that whole time period formed my opinions on jinxes, and I was in little league/Koufax then so I mean, it all seemed possible.

Good times.

So big take away so far is…we old!
😛

Pretty spot on, but I would say the strike zone now is not as loose as it was 20 years ago. For a long time umps had their own zone, but with today’s technology they are reviewed on accuracy.

Good point, but there is still a bias against the high strike and umps really like to give the outside pitch to the pitcher.
