2021 Target List

No, I said by year 3 Barnes should be making the tournament with his pedigree at Tennessee. Which he did, so wasn’t a big deal. Also UT actually went the same record as Crean in year 2.

Crean probably should get at least one more year if he misses the tourney considering the lack of direction that program has had.
Interesting you’d have no issue giving Crean 4 years, wasn’t much asking for patience coming from you about Barnes early on.

Tennessee has higher expectations, Tennessee is more committed to basketball and has a higher national profile than Georgia. I said the same thing with Cuonzo, no tournament by year 3 and he should be fired.

Also I’m not a Georgia fan. They maybe have different expectations so I don’t know.

What’s the meaning of the asterisks next to Huntley-Hatfield?

Jabari Smith becomes a critical piece even more so now. Gotta land him. I think with Banchero committed we can at least double our efforts on Smith which should help.

are we in the mix for Mutombos son? I'd assume he's a Georgetown lock but that would be a nice get.

Yes and no. We have recruited him, but I'm not sure he goes anywhere but Georgetown. He is down to them, Georgia, and Stanford, I believe.

Now No. 5 rated prospect Jabari Smith becomes even more of a priority for this staff. That one feels to me right now like it’s going to come down to the Vols, Auburn and Georgia. We’ve talked to a few people close to the situation this week and have gotten a variety of opinions. Some feel like the chance to win will override the lure of playing so close to home at Georgia while others think that the path Anthony Edwards blazed as a one-and-done player and potentially the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft will prove attractive to Smith.

Either way, it’s going to be a battle and Tennessee has Chandler trying to help all that he can.

Elsewhere, one response to Banchero’s commitment to Duke was that the entire Tennessee staff had a Zoom call with Charles Bediako on Thursday, the No. 22 ranked prospect in 2021.

The Vols also continue to push hard for recently reclassified Caleb Houstan, the No. 9 ranked prospect in 2021.

If the staff misses on Smith and Houstan as well, I wonder what direction they go from there. Surely there are some top guys out there that want to play with the #1 PG in the country.

Gotta put the full court press on Smith.
Holmes, Etienne and Mutombo would still be on the board as big guys.

Something to monitor is that we are competing with Duke for a few guys (not sure I thought I would ever type that), if there’s a school other than us we wanted Banchero to pick Duke was probably it. He’s now their 2nd commit and they are also targeting Bediako, Houstan, Keels and Baldwin...but they won’t take all of them. If Duke gets removed from the equation for Houstan and/or Bediako have to think it helps our chances.

Very good points. And Baldwin is likely headed to Duke (unless he decides to play for his father at Milwaukee), which would put them out for Bediako. I think they would take two wings in Houstan, with Griffin already committed. As it stands now, Smith, Bediako and Holmes seem to be most realistic options in the front court for us.

We are pretty much out of it on Mutumbo.

It's interesting just how kind of unknown what direction this class will go now. So many unknowns. If Smith Jr. does decide to stay home and go to Georgia it seems we might have to start pursuing some who aren't on our big board at the moment. It seems like we're on the outside looking in for both Houstan and BHH. Not sure with Bediako. I think if I was a gambling man it seems we're best in shape with Maschack.

I believe these developments might be a good thing in the long run.

I'm sure many on this board are happy about it because there is a portion who have openly expressed their preference for less talented four year players over more talented one to two year players, which is completely fine because everyone has their opinion on what creates a better program. For me, I'm still hoping we can land the targets we've been pursuing like Smith, Houstan, Bediako, or Maschack.
