2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

I imagine the USA coaches are thinking of ways to get Betts, Rickea, and Reese on the floor at the same time. Didn't they do that the first game? It does put Rickea way out on the wing but at some point she is going to have to play that position.

We need Rickea to hit more of the jumpers she usually hits. She hasn't shot very well, for her. Sure has hit the fts tho.

Probably Rickea, Jewel, Raven, Betts and Angel is the lineup.
Betts needs to anchor that second team. To close a close game? Sure.

I was all for her coming to Tennessee, but is wasn't going to happen wasn't even on her radar. It was UCLA where her sister plays all the way. The only other team that had even a slight chance was Colorado.
Yes I figured that out after, that we wasn’t on her radar. It’s always good to get excited during transfer season.

Heard the first "told you so". A second medal?
Nope, I just want everyone’s opinion to be respected. I find it funny how certain people will bash Reese on here everyday but that’s not a problem, but if I mention a certain player can’t catch a pass or always gets the ball stripped from them by small guards that’s a problem for some reason.

I really wish Jillian Hollingshead could’ve competed in the international 3x3 tourney so we could give her some earned praise! After all she is the big of the future in Knoxville and proved it in SEC play. I’m going to remind a few posters when she earns All-SEC honors this season!

She would still play behind Tamari for possibly two years. That is obviously not what she was looking for considering she wanted out of Cameron Brinks Shadow.
She wouldn’t play behind Key if they put the best player on the floor instead of whose been there longer. Key is not a bad player but Betts is better in my opinion.

she is fine about it

the experience is actually very detrimental to player bc 3 on 3 tourneys have a tendency to focus on "watch me" basketball

Her game (offensively) was the exact same at Maryland. Not much range, feasted off of scoring on rebounds mostly but has the occasional nice moves near the rim

The way FIBA is officiated is vastly different than how NCAA is, you can't get away with the same things and for those with limited international experience, its a rough wake up call... they allow much more physicality and things.

But Reese looks out of shape (endurance) but she is rebounding the ball at a high level at least even when the shot isn't falling. We need her, Rickea and Betts to keep it up, along with hitting the perimeter shots by the guards if we want to take home the gold.
I think a few players look out of shape but no need for me to say names. I’m sure when the season rolls around they will will in better shape.

the FIBA 3 x 3 refs don't call many contact fould unless the hand of the shooter is actually interferred with. Hollingshead would have benefitted if only not shying away from contact in the future.

the US Americup team is too similar to all-star games against country teams who play with cohesion within their talent ability

Based on what? A full season of TK at her peak or these 5 games from Betts? This isn't shade. Just curious. TK broke the all time Betts record and we haven't even really seen how good Betts can be. Not arguing just don't have enough data on Betts to even make that judgement.

I respect your opinion on not seeing enough yet, I’m just going on what I’ve seen and the flaws I think Key has in her game. Not every player needs to be an all American so Key may be enough for us. Key has like 3 years on her, but let’s compare what they do this season and how they look.

It is hard to compare, and it's been so long since we've seen healthy TK. But if Key plays offense this season anywhere near where Betts is playing this tourney, I'll die a happy man.

Key was out last season and just really got into working out. I would say comparing Betts second season where she will be more utilized it looks like to TKs might be better ... but i agree

I’ve only seen Betts play in these games, and I’m snowed. I see no flaws, she’s quick, she scores, she can catch the high passes, she makes most of her free throws, and she blocks like crazy. On top of all that, her attitude/demeanor is perfect, she never looks tired, upset or angry, no matter how many times she gets pushed, or hit in the head. She doesn’t play to a camera, she just plays, and yes, I wish we had her.

What has been good is that both Rickea and Jewel have been looking to the Post often in this tournament. With 6-7 Key, 6-5 Hollingshed & what I am sure to be a much improved Stiplin, teams will have to pack the paint against us and unlike Team USA's guards, we have guards that can shoot a very high percentage from the 3. I think Wells shot just over 45% last season and Darby shot 42%. Jewel shouldn't be the primary scout on this team and I would expect her to have better looks at the three subsequently upping her 3-point percentage. She was at about 36% last season as a first option at wake forest. Give her just a little space and I think she will be well over 40% this season too. Then we have Sarah Puckett who has also proved she can knock down the 3 ball. This Lady Vol team is built for scoring at all three levels from multiple players. If they can put the defense together this season, we are going to be very tough to beat.

Have you been contracted to coach D1 basketball? Didn’t think so. But you expect the board and thread to respect you as though that is the basis of your opinion. GTFO.

I never wanted to be a coach, I just played sports. Everyone’s opinion should be respected on here and if someone doesn’t respect mine they can stay off my comments and keep it movin.

Oh and tell me who opinion is so much more important on here? The answer is nobody’s, we are all here because we love the lady vols, but I will always voice my unbiased opinion on matters because that’s what forums are for, if someone doesn’t like it they can skip to the next post.

Tomorrow morning the EST time will be converted/posted in the FIBA site
I have no idea. glv98 said eastern is 2 hours ahead of mountain time, and your graph says eastern is 4 hours behind GMT. (Was answering before you edited). So, I am not understanding FIBA times at all.

Whatever FIBA posts, I hope someone here will clarify.
GO USA, BEAT CANADA!
