2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

38 percent from the field today is usually not a win, but they shot worse than we did. We dominated the boards and the inside players did well. The guards were again not doing much scoring except Spear with 9.

Your medal is in the mail. Bathe in righteousness.

Truth is, not many people have seen Betts play before this. That was kind of the point of her transfer.
That’s not what it’s about, I didn’t see her much at all. I just did my research for the transfers and analyzed their games, and I made my decision on who would be good for the team.

Rios was a firecracker. High motor, high skills, high bbiq.

I was all for her coming to Tennessee, but is wasn't going to happen wasn't even on her radar. It was UCLA where her sister plays all the way. The only other team that had even a slight chance was Colorado.

Jewel played well, esp late. Some nice assists. She will help us a ton. USA guard play still very spotty overall.

Betts got another double double and so did Reese. But I swear Reese looks so uncoordinated and ragged. She's dogged tho, have to give her that.

Sloppy, but got the job done. Tomorrow will be tougher, I'm assuming against Canada. Did I hear that Allaya Edwards is their center? If so, those matchups will be interesting.

A healthy Tamari Key or Jillian Hollingshead would dominate international play. The centers on opposing teams are about 6’0 ft tall.

Canada a fairly loaded team with Ejim remember her from when we player Gonzaga she was their big center. Then there is Edwards from UConn, and three or four players that play Pro ball in France and Turkey. We'll have our work cut out for us as I think they should be regarded as the best team in the tourney until they lose. I can see the winner of that game winning the Gold medal cause we just played as ugly as we possibly could when we played Brazil that first time think we could take them in a rematch and I think Canada can beat them as well.

Funny how everyone likes Betts all of a sudden, but when I said we should get her in the transfer portal to start at center, many people said she wasn’t good, I look for certain things in players and I knew she had the game. Anyone can go look up my posts for that for reference.
She would still play behind Tamari for possibly two years. That is obviously not what she was looking for considering she wanted out of Cameron Brinks Shadow.

To be honest, that is how AR played at LSU. I didn’t watch much of her at Maryland. The thing is, the officiating is so bad in college basketball and inconsistent. Reese benefits from getting fouls offensively where she initiates the contact and defensively she gets away with a lot of contact. In international play, they are atleast consistent in contact around the basketball is rarely called unless the offensive player gets the shot up to the rim. Those fouls before making an attempt to score are rarely called and it has definitely taken Reese off her game due to having a limited offensive skill set.

Yeah I never thought she was a Skill Master but I don't remember her looking this awkward, missing shots this badly and getting blocked so much. Also she's out of shape. But hey, suits me fine if AR continues to play like this all season! One of the reasons she gets so many rebounds is that she misses putbacks so much and then rebounds them. I guess the numbers are the numbers tho, and she's finding a way to be productive.

To be fair, this is their 5th full game in 7 days. Surprisingly, they practiced yesterday on an off day, probably didn't do much. They have to be tired. And Rickea and Jewel coming right off a long trip. I believe Rickea has played the most mins of anyone. They both deserve a good vacay when they get home. Probably want to spend it sleeping in own bed.

Her game (offensively) was the exact same at Maryland. Not much range, feasted off of scoring on rebounds mostly but has the occasional nice moves near the rim

The way FIBA is officiated is vastly different than how NCAA is, you can't get away with the same things and for those with limited international experience, its a rough wake up call... they allow much more physicality and things.

But Reese looks out of shape (endurance) but she is rebounding the ball at a high level at least even when the shot isn't falling. We need her, Rickea and Betts to keep it up, along with hitting the perimeter shots by the guards if we want to take home the gold.

I imagine the USA coaches are thinking of ways to get Betts, Rickea, and Reese on the floor at the same time. Didn't they do that the first game? It does put Rickea way out on the wing but at some point she is going to have to play that position.

We need Rickea to hit more of the jumpers she usually hits. She hasn't shot very well, for her. Sure has hit the fts tho.

Probably Rickea, Jewel, Raven, Betts and Angel is the lineup.
