2023 Recruiting

You can’t possibly believe that Kim wasn’t at an advantage when she was at Baylor and Dawn was at Temple…
Mulkey took over a bottom-of-the-barrel Baylor program and turned it into a winner very quickly. Mind you Kim wasn't a head coach coming to the Baylor program, she was an assistant. Kim was not a head coach until 2000 and won a national championship in 2005. Still don't know how she pieced that team together with Sophia Young as the star. Kim has never lost anywhere she has ever been including as a player, olympian, assistant coach or head coach. Dawn Staley had been around as a division 1 coach for 8 years before coming to South Carolina and still took another 5 - 6 years to get that program moving in the right direction and 9 years to get a national championship. The numbers speak for themselves.

Dawn started getting attention when part left and she went to SC.. Made it little high and top players started going there. I remembered when she finds it hard to beat Uconn. Naw some fans say she can recruit, when u make name yes they come.

And the last thing that matters is your post today about a fake disappointment based on recruiting services and ratings….
The news that matters today is..
Three first team all-sec players🟧⬜🟧⬜
Pre-season #2 ranked team in conference.
Truth about recruiting is that Tennessee
Will sign 3 or 4 basketball players in the 2023 class.

Why is everyone so hung up on RANKINGS? (Fans, coaches, colleges) i mean do they get bonuses or money if they pull in a ranked kid over a non ranked kid??
So what if we offer a kid that is not ranked, heck that kid could be just as good or better than any ranked kid, as long as that kid can get it done on the court why not give them a chance. Offer kids based on talent, skillset and the ability to HOOP, not a number by their name.
ESPN hoop gurlz is the top ranking site and I guarantee you they haven't laid eyes on 1/4 of hoppers across the country. So many kids are not even given a chance bc there is simply not a number by their name. PERIOD

RANKINGS mean absolutely NOTHING its someone opinion simple as that

Look at all the kids KELLIE has offered, every single one in the 23 and 24 class is RANKED and 0 commits (i am not saying ranked kids shouldnt be offered), if every school is gonna go after the exact same kids everyone but 1 is going to lose out.
My point is there are kids out there just as good as the kids she has offered that might actually want to come to TN but they won't get a 2nd Glance
Rank that same kid tomorrow who wasn't ranked today....BOOM offer
FACTS

Holly’s teams didn’t lose because of her players.

exactly, Holly's team under-performed bc of coaching (lack of).

I agree in both respects,,,no hoopgurlz can't be in every court, but they are in every main exposure level tournament. And they rarely miss on their top calls.

On the flipside, I as a skills instructor believe I can make a top recruit out of ANY athlete that desires to and work to become a top prospect if they have the innate tools to be so. ANd I am sure I am not the only coach who feels this way

Well damn , there goes strike 3 out 3 in the 9th inning for 2023. Very disappointed the staff could not bring home 1 recruit in this talented class.
I share your dismay....especially with Velez and ADR. We had Velez and something swayed her is dis-swayed her at the end.

You all can always commit to go support another school.. nobody will miss you when you’re gone.
I don’t care what anyone says.. investing that kind of energy into the decision of a HS recruit is simple minded.

SC wasn’t bottom of the barrel?

Well Kim had coaching experience regardless. She wasn’t just thrown into the fire at Baylor she was groomed and prepared. Dawn on the other hand was asked to coach and turned it down initially but decided to do it on the backend of her playing career. You also forgot to mention the first 6 years Dawn was coaching she also was still playing in the WNBA. Hard enough to be a coach but also playing in the WNBA while doing so is tough within itself. Nevertheless she still got Temple an A-10 championship and one of her players went on to become one of the best players in WNBA history. She then decided to just be a coach and move on to a P5 school (like Mulkey had been for 8 years prior) where she knew she could make a bigger impact. Since then she’s won the SEC title multiple times and has 2 National championships. Currently has a 2x WNBA MVP and #1 Draft pick and is set to have another #1 Draft pick hopefully this year. Comparably Kim only has BG (Free Her!) who she doesn’t seem to care much about but yes, continue your Mulkey fest! I’m sure there will be others in attendance as well.

I always get a laugh when anyone starts talking about how smart one coach is vs another. The smart ones are the ones that can recruit and get the best players. Evidence is Geno's first three or four seasons at UConn. He became a better coach when he started recruiting the top players. Same for Dawn first years at SC were quite ugly until she started getting top players and suddenly winning happened. I know some coaches are a little better at knowing how to use their personnel and get the most of their players. Still the best coaches will be the ones that recruit the best players cause recruiting makes winning coaches not the other way around.

We are talking about coaching ability here and putting your teams in a position to win with or without major talent and star power. You seem to forget about 2005 and Sophia Young and Kim's first national championship, 5 years after Kim became a head coach. How many other coaches can claim that type of success so early in a career? Pretty much none; including the Legends still coaching today like Gino or Tara. It took 5 years and Kim did not have nearly the opportunities of Dawn Staley. There was no WNBA and she paid her dues as an assistant to become a head coach. A head coaching job was not just handed to her "just because" she knew how to play basketball which Kim Mulkey had coming through Lousianna Tech in their glory days. The job she did at LSU last year was worthy of coach of the year awards with no superstars on that team and a team that had finished middle of the pack the two previous years and had not made the NCAA tournament in years. When it comes to X's and O's and motivating a team to succeed up and beyond expectation, Mulkey is the better coach and has proven that over and over again. We can agree to disagree, but the numbers don't lie.

We are going to have to win recruits on the court because it is absolutely clear we can't close in the living room.

There is obviously a huge problem with how we are going about closing. If this were the men's team we would know what that problem is because there would be sources of information and people who cover the team instead of just cheer for it.

Well, Kim is done just like Geno. Maybe she'll hire u as an assistant since u kn her history. Do u kn her history for not caring after her players graduated 🤔 😪 😅

SC's 25K is paying off we definitely need to get ourselves some type of similar team NIL deal ASAP. Culture clearly did not help us land recruits this year as money talks and culture continues to walk.

I would look at them adding a 23 player just not anyone that’s highly ranked
There's really no need to add a 23 player, just for the sake of adding one. If they do, it will be to fill a need, which there aren't many. I would hope they look international or just wait for the portal and focus on 2024 and beyond.

25,000 is "minimum wage" at SCar for sharing in team-related NIL. Do you think Boston and Cooke are limited to $25,00) on their "outside" NIL?

Clearly I don't think that. What would you speculate SC is offering through collectives and local businesses to its top 2023 recruits?

I would take a 2023 athletic 6-5+ post as a "project". Otherwise, I'm signaling to our collectives that we need a top 5 PG and a top 5 C for 2024.
I thought we were going to get Collier and that fell through and she ended up at NC St. She might turn out to be better than Del Rosario she was developing fast and had an outside shot. We'll have to find a center that can play elite basketball if Tamari is leaving. I know we have Jillian but she is more suited as a 3 or 4. Now I think you see who gets in the portal cause you need players that you don't have to bring along a year or two we'll need at least two players that can be elite players immediately. I guess if you could find a freshman or two that you think could be a factor in a year you could get them as well.
