2023 Recruiting

I keep going back to this: Kellie hasn't won anything yet. No conference titles, no natties or FF's or even an EE. The best she has done in her career is some SS's, and the top recruits are not gonna be impressed with that. She also cannot point to a whole bunch of players that she recruited, developed, and put in the League. And she has entered a recruiting arena filled with coaches who have won big: Mulkey, the UConn dwarf, Stanford, Dawn, etc. If I were a top HS recruit with WNBA dreams and no emotional connection to UT, I'd be much more inclined to sign with one of them than Kellie, all other things being even.

I think Kellie must at least get to a FF before the top recruits will come. That so many have been strongly considering her is a good sign. But she is swimming with big bad sharks when it comes to recruiting the top players. Many of us have pointed to this year - her fourth - as the critical year. Her team is loaded and deep with veteran, top-quality players that she got through the portal and from Holly. Now is time to strike while the iron is hot. Build it and they will come.
Agreed! I'm one of those people in the build it, they will come category. If we get to the FF this season (all respect to Kellie and the coaches for assembling this year's incredible team), our ticket is written for a while. Barring injury, if we can't get to the FF with this squad, especially if we don't make it to the EE, it would suggest Kellie has a coaching ceiling. There is alot of pressure on this team and our coaches, possibly more now than even that first and second year after Holly left.

0? ... remember Pissott?

Yes, I'm cool with discussion. Personally, I'm in yellow flag territory. I'm not at red flag yet but the 2024 HS class will be critical AND may need to hit the portal again. Yellow flag warrants a thorough review of everything we are doing with HS recruiting and a review of everything our opponents are doing against us. None of this is stuff that CKH and staff don't know. Honestly, I would be surprised if the AD isn't involved in improving this process. If this is mostly NIL related (as I speculate that it is) then he may be our best bet to fix it.
I do,,,@GameTime does ;o)

I agree with you fully on this.
Are there not any ELITE kids who are emotionally connected to TN, NONE?? Or are we just not offering or even looking at those kids, the ones who would give there all to be at TN and be loyal?? I know it would have to probably be a TN kid to have that emotional attachment but there has to be SOME right?? 2024 has some TOP TN TALENT

She did beat S.C. last year..correct?

Thought she committed in 2021

Nope, she actually verbally committed October 8, 2020, and no (scholarship) high school player has committed since. Give Kellie credit for being maybe the only college coach to ever go over two years without securing a high school commitment, and it doesn't appear that streak will end anytime soon...

Pat Summit got two important junior college players who help her get seven, eight chamship. Lady vols have three players who might go first round wnba draft. Or they take covid year and stay. 23 recuits do not know whos taking covid 5 year. If playing time is # 1 that could be hurting vols for 23 class. Iwould not mind a player like the two pat pick up out of junior college!

Edie Darby committed November 2021, made it official in January 2022. She is a high school commitment, though no scholarship yet.

Edie Darby, sister of Tess Darby, commits to Lady Vols

Justine committed over a year earlier for the same class. At the time, she was ranked #49, she later was ranked #11.

Tennessee Lady Vols receive first 2022 commit in Justine Pissott

Then we got the best class of four new players from the portal.

High school commits is not the only way to go, anymore.

Nega people on here trying to act like they know what life will be like with the portal. We are a top 5 school today because of it. Two different ways to build teams now. Just have to be good at one of them.

I agree. I’m not particularly concerned. I think being more selective is better.

Everyone keeps saying we only had a class of Justine this season. False. We have Edie Darby as well, who I believe will eventually contribute as a role player, even as a walk on.

And in todays landscape I’m happy to include transfers in the “recruiting classes.”

Really we brought in a class of Rickea Jackson, Jasmine Franklin, Jasmine Powell, Jillian Hollingshed, Justine Pissott and Edie Darby. I don’t know a single school in the country that would be wringing their hands like Lady Vol fans are 🙄.

Plus, we have had minimal transfers out compared to other schools. That is worth more than a couple high school recruits itself. So hard to build a consistent program when you’re continually losing players. Look at Maryland, they have had some of the best high school recruits in recent years, but their ability to retain them is terrible.

Thank u...Exactly what I've been saying. Personally, I love portal because it's like trading in pro sports. Imagine not recruiting well and there's no portal. I'm happy what Kellie is building with portal. Now she can slowly build on high school. Portal helps other schools build when other top schools picks top high schools recruits. Nowadays, there's portal, junior college, & high school so it's more competitive.

The facts are we did a great job with the portal last off season but it's an unknown if we are going to duplicate the same portal success we can only hope but that's not a guarantee even though a lot of posters say we will be fine with the portal.we can just as easily strike out or not get the type of players we just got from the portal

If we win at the rate I expect us to this season and are an exciting team, we’ll get some players with a year or two under their belts already who want something different. We also still have two more years of:

Marta
Tess
Sara
Karo
BK
Kaiya
Jill

3 more of Justine/Edie and one more of Powell. This alone is Elite 8/Final 4 material factoring development and coaching imo.

Adding 2-3 elite players from the portal who have 2-3 more playing years I’m sure will be the goal and winning makes that easier. We will be fine y’all lol.

Sounds like you a glass half empty type. There be plenty of good players available in the portal every year.
