2023 Recruiting

I didn't say there wouldn't be great players I'm saying getting them isn't a guarantee. I'm not a half empty guy I'm a guy who can think on both sides of the equation

I didnt say you were a glass half empty person, just you sounded like it….. See two can play that game.

Relax, I’m not wanting to argue whether or not we will get good players from the portal. I believe we will. There are more players than minutes across the country. Just look at other sports, aka Vols football as an example. It is actually easier through the portal to stay competitive.

If we win at the rate I expect us to this season and are an exciting team, we’ll get some players with a year or two under their belts already who want something different. We also still have two more years of:

Marta
Tess
Sara
Karo
BK
Kaiya
Jill

3 more of Justine/Edie and one more of Powell. This alone is Elite 8/Final 4 material factoring development and coaching imo.

Adding 2-3 elite players from the portal who have 2-3 more playing years I’m sure will be the goal and winning makes that easier. We will be fine y’all lol.
marta has three more years if she wants them. first year could be her covid year year. last year she redshirt. So vol nation Marta Suarez is redshirt softmore with a covid year if she wants it. So Edia Darby, Marta Suarez, Justine Pissott not a bad class!!!

I don't argue I state my opinion you or anyone can have an opinion and I'm good on all fronts. I believe in free speech without getting upset at someone else's opinion or statement whether we agree or disagree I promise you that

Who is Tennessee and does it matter? Our coaches seem competent. They are certainly quiet, reserved and the antithesis of flashy. Nothing against flashy. It works for some... but it's really not our style.
Our NIL program seems to be transparent and the eptionmy of NCAA guidelines. As some programs advertise the largesse of their NIL programs, it seems to me, we have shied away from that approach. Time will tell I guess.
We have sixteen young women on a team that only has 15 scharlships. @mudcat1973 is right on target here. On paper we have the best team we have fielded in years. Several of thoes players may return for their COVID-19 year. They probably want ...but they could. I don't think you can honestly discount that possibility if you are being transparent when discussing the future with a recruit.
Until the extra year of eligibility has been exhausted for all players, portal recruiting may be more important than high school recruiting. The extra year of eligibility has created unique situations that require unique recruiting solutions. Our staff seems to be ahead of the curve in this regard.
Our deal seems to be hard work (no short cuts), team first always, and sincerely caring about young women and making the best decisions for their future.
That's who we are and I think it matters. I've never been more excited. Go Lady VOLS.

Marta Should actually have 3 more years due to last years redshirt season. Even if every senior left, which i doubt is going to happen, especially now that they can earn $$$ in college and the fact that Jasmine Powell said she would be doing two years, the cupboard would still be very full and this would be a very competitive team against most of the SEC. There are still 2 all-Americans (Justine and Jillian) in that mix that are going to continue to improve and expand their games and 2 other players in Tess and Marta that have college starting experience and continue to get better every year. Everyone on that list will be competing for playing time this year.

Right I didn’t put an additional year on anyone who hasn’t yet said they’re taking it…

The portal grab was super impressive and IMO barring major injuries UT on paper is without debate a top 4 team heading into this season. Having said that, 0 recruits on ANY cycle is concerning. If Pat or Holly had 0 recruits in a recruiting cycle this board would be going ballistic. Kellie isn't exempt to that because of the portal, but it certainly helps her case. How much? Time will tell. But as of today not one person can honestly tell me not having 1 recruit isn't alarming. How is this even a legitimate debate?

Correct. Be ready for the onslaught! You will be called a negative fan not a true Lady Vol fan and so forth. If you mention anything concerning you get some posters( not naming names) lucy....saying your a whiner, and a troll. You will be accused of calling for the coaches head. Just a warning..

Thats fine. I love this board. Check it if not daily pretty close to to it. I bleed orange and just happened to be UT grad. Will also just say because someone isn't a UT grad you aren't any less of a fan. My 2 siblings aren't UT grads but we all 3 grew up bleeding orange. We all 3 bleed orange. I DVR every football and both men and women's UT basketball games. All 3 teams have had lulls and great times. My opinion is certainly just that an opinion. Great. But I am not a troll or here to wear orange colored glasses. Rick Barnes would be castrated for not signing a single recruit for a recruiting cycle. Why should Kellie be exempt to that? You think the staff is ok with this? Just watch clips of Kellie. Something is off. Countless reasons but let's just call it currently is. High school recruits aren't coming to UT in women's basketball right now. Let's debate why? I personally don't get why.

There is a problem. Some say they are not a fit. Then why have them on campus?? Playing the portal game will eventually catch up to the team. The 1 and done does not build a solid foundation. Even with C.P. and Catch doing all they can it's not working. Love Kellie, bit she has an issue to fix.

If you can get at least two with more than one season of eligibility then no problem. Then you add a couple who are Grad Transfers or just Seniors looking for another place to play. Hollingshead is basically a freshman recruit as she has four years to play. Powell has two to play and will use them. Jackson has two to play very doubtful she will use them. Franklin has only this season. Nine returnees we need three players one or two must be elite so we'll see what happens for 2023 still can easily be a top ten team and depending on who is available even higher. 2024 you have seven returnees hopefully adding at least two from the portal in 2023 with more than one season of eligibility you are at nine. Another season to try and get two or three high schoolers but you will need a a few from the portal again as well as this would be a big graduation year with only Pissott and depending who stays for a Covid year of the many Seniors we'll have that season.

Barnes evidently has the NIL money backing to get the recruits this time around as it was looking bleak at one time. He changed Phillips with a huge NIL deal and all the other guys are getting over 60 thousand accord to an article I read. I don't know what kind of NIL backing Kellie has but if she has it she needs to use it as this to me seems to be where commitments that look close to coming here suddenly stray to another team. Shade got a phone call on the plane home and committed to UConn on the spot left uncommitted but that phone call changed everything. This seems to be the scenario for many of high schoolers as well so the staff has to know what it takes these days and evidently don't have the backing Barnes has.

I hope we make her pay for that decision. Year 👏🏿After👏🏿Year👏🏿

Truth of the matter is there's not the same NIL money on the women's side at UT as there is on the men's side. It killed us in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Tennessee laws are not as favorable to NIL either as in some states - Louisiana, for example. In Tennessee, a coach cannot contribute to a collective and cannot seek donations from corporations or donors; this is legal in Louisiana, and they have those funds available a plenty (a female gymnast has $2 million in NIL money).

Lady Vol supporters need to join the BoostHer Club, which is the collective for female sports at UT. There are opportunities for monthly membership and one-time donations, or corporate sponsorships. Sprye Sports is the collective for men's side. There's a stark difference in the financial picture between the two collectives.

Many people don't like NIL. I'm one of them. I want student-athletes to have these opportunities, but there is no regulation by the NCAA - it's created a very unbalanced recruiting landscape. That needs to be addressed immediately, but it seems like it won't be and $$$ will rule.

Definitely created a problem for any school that can't pony up the offers and one coach that sees that clearly is Barnes. I'm sure he has some big name boosters lined up with him with businesses around this area and maybe nationwide. Kellie will need that also cause SC and more so Kim already are using it big time.

Rick Barnes Isn't Afraid To Say What NIL Has Become And Where The NCAA Needs To Go

Barnes went out and got the player he wanted that had Tennessee on their final list.

2023 four-star center J.P. Estrella appears headed to Tennessee, and here's maybe why - Hawk Fanatic

You have them come to campus to discover if they ae a fit or not. Duh. Interaction with the player is where you find this out and not by just sitting in the bleachers at an AAU event. Come on. You're smarter than that.

There are all kinds of things that recruits can't know until they go on an official visit to campus and have a thorough look around the campus, the sports facilities, the dorms and, of course, the staff and team in their element.

This may sound funny, but I know a woman whose parents were Tennessee grads and hoped their intellectual daughter would love it when they took her on a visit from their home in Oklahoma. Well, they got there and, according to my friend, "I took one look around at all those hills to climb in between classes on that huge campus and said, "I'm not a mountain climber. This isn't for me!" She ended up at Oklahoma State.

I won't mention her name or what year, but I know of one player who was said to have been put off by "too much God talk."

We had one player transfer years ago because HER religious family thought U.T. was too tolerant of homosexuals.

A player may get on campus, in the locker room or look around at who is in charge and have questions about whether they'll fit in. Depending on their own upbringing, they may look around and wonder if it's "too white" or "too black" or "too strict" or "too wild" or "too hilly" or "too far from shopping" or "not enough public transportation," or "too far from home" or "too churchy" or whatever else.

Bottom line is campus visits can be illuminating for kids.

Coaches have researched and examined these players to where they knowwhen they have to pee!! It's when we are rejected us when they weren't a fit. You think we offer without talking to their coaches and schools?? Cone on,your smarter than that......
