Who would win the tiebreaker if both us and Vandy finished with the same conference record since we split the series?

In a TN versus Vandy head to head, TN would win the tie break since we have a win over the 1 seed. In a 3 way tie for 4th, see below:

"How does a 3 way tie work in the SEC?"

B. In the event of a three-way tie, the won-loss records of the tied teams against each other is first considered (i.e., head to head concept). If the teams are still tied, then each team's record against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie is considered.

I think the committee sets their brackets before the SEC tournament begins. They just adjust for upsets in the automatic bid games. Last year made this clear with the UT and UK final seeding.
They have to. The SECT should end on Friday or Saturday. Makes no sense to have it end on Sunday and then have them making the selections a couple hours later. It’s too chaotic.

Potential 4 team tiebreakers if all finish at 11-7 (record amongst teams in parentheses):

3 seed: Missouri (3-0)
4 seed: Kentucky (3-2)
5 seed: Vanderbilt (2-3)
6 seed: Tennessee (1-4)

Tennessee would end up playing the winner of 11 vs 14 which would be Georgia vs LSU in this scenario. If we win that then we would get Missouri in the quarters and then potentially Texas A&M in the semis. Honestly not a bad path to the SEC Championship Game if it works out that way.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but this year, I'm a lot more interested in the NCAAT. I'd like the double bye and won't mind losing our first SECT game. The added days of rest would be most welcome.
I was thinking the same thing about the SECT until ZZ went down. Now I'm thinking we need to play as much as possible before the NCAAT to figure out who does what with ZZ not at the point.

Currently:

** 1) Bama (16-1)(at A&M)
** 2) TXAM (14-3)(Bama)
~~~~~~~ TN’s cut off ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3) KY (11-6)(@Ark)
3) TN (11-6)(@Barn)
5) MZ (10-7)(OM)
5) VU (10-7)(MSU)
~~~~~~~ TN’s cut off ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7) Barn (9-8)(TN)
8) Ark (8-9)(KY)
8) FL (8-9)(LSU)
8) MSU (8-9)(@VU)
** 11) GA (6-11)(@USCjr)
12) OM (3-14)(@MZ)
12) USCjr (3-14)(GA)
** 14) LSU (2-15)(@FL)

** = locked in to seed

TN will be no better than #3 and no worse than #6.

TN has the 2-way tie breaker with VU.
KY has the 2-way tie breaker with TN.
Missouri has the 2-way tie breaker with TN.

TN is seed #5 in a 3-way tie breaker with UK and VU.

TN v Missouri: 0-1
TN v UK: 0-2
TN v VU: 1-1

VU v Missouri: 0-1
VU v UK: 1-1
UK v Missouri: 0-1

Based on this bracket, feels like the bottom side has a far more manageable and enjoyable path to Sunday next weekend. We really need to win and root for a UK loss. A 3-seed would have a pretty easy path.

I think that TN loses every tie break scenario other than a 2-way tie with Vandy. Those 2 loses to UK and the last second losses to Missouri and Vandy pretty much determined those outcomes.

I think LSU should be locked in to last place too. Their only wins are against Vanderbilt and Arkansas. They should lose any tiebreaker with either Ole Miss or South Carolina.

So many uncontrollables, win and see where the chips fall, a win is best thing for the tournament that matters.

Easiest way to get the double bye - Win and guaranteed a top 4

TN wins, KY wins = TN earns a 4 seed
TN wins, KY loses = TN earns a 3 seed (sets up a potential rematch against A&M in semis if we win 1 game).

Additional Scenarios:

KY wins, TN LOSES, MO, and Vandy win = all three would end 11-7 and MO would earn the double bye * since they have wins over both TN and Vandy. TN would then earn the 5 seed *since we have a win over Alabama.

KY wins, TN LOSES, MO loses, Vandy loses = TN earns the double bye as a 4 seed.

KY wins, TN LOSES, MO loses, Vandy wins = TN earns the double bye as a 4 seed

KY wins, TN LOSES, Vandy loses, MO wins = MO earns the double bye, TN earns the 5 seed.

TN LOSES, KY loses, MO wins, Vandy wins = MO would earn the 3 seed *3-0 against the other 3 teams, KY would earn the 4 seed *3-1 against the remaining 2 teams, Vandy 5, TN 6.

TN LOSES, KY Loses, MO loses, Vandy wins = KY would earn the 3 seed *2-1 against the remaining 2 teams, TN would earn the 4 seed, Vandy the 5 seed.

Our ceiling is a 3 seed
Our floor is a 6 seed

Most likely outcome is the 4 seed and we are still on a collision course for a TN / Bama rematch.

Obviously the win is more important for the tournament that matters. But, this is a thread about the SEC Tournament lol. So I’m discussing the SEC Tournament.

I also know after winning it last year people might not be as excited this time around, but I still want to win the SEC Tournament. A trophy is a trophy and I would hate to watch this team and this senior class go out with nothing to really show for it this year. Defending their title would be pretty cool and something to be proud of.

Edited for correction. TN would be the 6th seed (and agree much better path).

I think TN’s floor is the 6 rather than the 5. The 3-way ties and the 4-way tie puts TN at #6 if I’m not mistaken.

Also feel like we would have a better chance at closing out a 2 seed if we go win the thing this year compared to last year. Wouldn’t have to worry about competing with Kentucky for it this go around and it feels a lot more wide open this season.

In this scenario however, TN would be slotted 5th and Vandy 6th. MO would earn the 3, then the three way tie break would go into effect which would have KY (3-1), TN (1-3), Vandy (2-2). KY would earn the 4th spot, then the two way tie break would go into effect, TN (1-1), Vandy (1-1), TN earns the 5 courtesy of our win over AL. I agree though, the path would be easier in that scenario as the 6 seed!
That’s not how tiebreakers work. It’s the cumulative record amongst the teams that are tied. Tennessee has the worst one so we would be 6th.

TN has NEVER won back-to-back SECT championships. I wouldn’t mind that happening.

You’re right. It’s not a tie break then reset.

Three-Team Tie (or more)
When three or more teams are tied, the following procedure will be used in the following order until the tie is broken. If two teams re- main tied after a tiebreaker provision, the two-team tiebreaker formula will be used.

  1. Best winning percentage of games played among the tied teams (Example: Team A is 3-1, Team B is 2-2 and Team C is 1-3 - Team A would be seeded highest, Team B second-highest and Team C lowest of the three).
  2. Best winning percentage of the tied teams versus the No. 1 seed (and proceed- ing through the No. 14 seed, if necessary).
  3. If two teams remain, coin flip by the Commissioner.
  4. If three or more teams remain, draw by the Commissioner.

Yeah, what you said earlier is correct. We would only win a 2 team tiebreaker with Vanderbilt due to the Alabama win. All other tiebreakers we would lose.

Absolutely, I’m just saying it’s impossible to say win or lose or root for this or that because there’s so many moving parts that we aren’t gonna have a clue who is where until near the end of the day.
