2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

Did someone say they want ZZ gone? Lmao. I'm upset and have plenty of gripes with this roster construction, but that's the dumbest thing I've heard on this board in a while.[/QUOTE
Wanting ZZ gone is stupid, but you do need to take his size limitations into consideration when you pair him with other guards. Have to surround him with size, defense and shooting. I’m not sure you could ever play ZZ and BJ together.

Kaden Shedrick or kelel ware (needs to eat a couple cheeseburgers) would be a nice add to line up next to Aidoo and awaka

Will Barnes play him early? Need shooters and this guy can, but if he’s below average defensively, I am pessimistic that he’ll get playing time.

I like Carr’s potential defensively but he still needs to add more strength at this point, which I think he will eventually. But he may be the best 3 point shooter on next years roster. It’ll be interesting to see how many minutes Barnes gives him or if he decides to redshirt him

Barnes needs to make sure to hit the transfer portal hard. There's a lot of good offensive players in that portal at the moment. Caleb Love just entered, I wasn't a big fan of his game because he takes crazy shots and can brick, but kid isn't afraid to shoot... we need someone with his confidence

Also, give me griard! Glad to hear we are in the running for him.

Also saw that we are going after a kid from uic? Looks like a slashing guard that dunks a lot but can shoot the three pretty good!

Center from Uva entered. Had most blocks in the acc. Offer him

Gotta be honest. When a player of this caliber comes available and from a blue blood like UNC, it raises questions. Yeah, I know UNC has what...half their team...in the portal, but I question what might be happening behind the scenes when it's called a "mutual parting of the ways". Maybe UNC sees it as a situation where they are UNC and they don't sweat any player leaving. I'd certainly turn over all the rocks I could before I went all in on this one.

Barnes needs to evolve, like the Miami coach. Look at Miami and UConn, you have to be able to score to advance. If you have trouble scoring 60 points, you’re generally going to get beat earlier than you should, like UVA.
No offense but that's unrealistic. Between Texas and UT, he's got almost a quarter century of history of who and what he is. His tournament record speaks for itself and he's painfully aware of it. If he were going to change or even remotely capable of it, he'd have done it by now. No, we are who and what we are under Barnes because Barnes will always be who and what he is.

Can I just say that I think we have been lacking in the transfer portal the past couple years since it started. It seems like teams get in on the top transfers so quickly, but here we are just twiddling our thumbs or going after guys like Anosike or Key. I really like Tyreke and I think he added a little bit to this team, but not enough. We really need to hit the portal hard and get guys that are actual game changers. Barnes has disappointed me with the portal so far, but he can get better. Love him as a coach but I really wish he would change the way he does some things.

Would take Caleb Love in a heartbeat, 5 star PG outta HS 6'4" and in the ACC he's played in 101 games for 32.8 mpg and is a career 14.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg player.

The ONLY knock I'd have is his shooting percentages aren't great. He's a career 36% FG guy and just 31.7% from 3PT. Was a top 15 rated guy outta HS.

Not sure he'd be my #1 take for a PG, but if a 3rd or 4th spot opened up and he was interested I'd take him.

Barnes was clearly slow to embrace the portal. When he did, he got burned with the Yuri Collins debacle. Then he goes with Key and that was a disappointment. Hope he's not put off by his recent history and will dive right in and get some guys who can really play to help us next year, but I won't be surprised if he's a bit gun shy. I fear he's going to go slow. He's going to look for defense and fit and we'll end up with another disappointing performance in the portal.

That’s what I’m afraid of as well.

Surprised to see Vandy with so many in the portal.

Noah Shelby I'd probably be interested in, top 125 PG outta TX and a 4 star guy. Only played in 14 games and didn't get many minutes, 6'3" he might not be a starter though, but if he uses a medical for this season he still has 4 years left.

An interesting big would be Davion Bradford, he was at Kansas State for two years then spent one with Wake Forest and is in the portal again. 7' 265lbs but he's really not gotten a ton of minutes anywhere he's been. His FG% is ridiculous and he's 100% an in the paint guy. Despite a lack of minutes he has played in 84 total games in the Big 12 and ACC and his per 40 has him being a 10/8 guy... probably not enough of a scorer for us but great size.

Something is up at UNC too... they have 6 players in the portal now.

So far...the best Santi replacement (imo) would be Cormac Ryan from ND.

6'5" 195lbs was a top 60 guy outta HS. 116 games played and a career 30.6 mpg guy.

10.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.1 spg for his career 40% FG, 35.2% 3PT, 80.5% FT

One reason I like him is he'd only be a 1 year guy, so him being here shouldn't push away any of the younger guys (DJ, Freddie, Carr) but it'd add a lot of experience to the guard group.

Consider, Barnes will have a very young roster with no expectations plus a limited ZZ for possibly the first half of the season. He's got no end of reasons for a lackluster season next year. Zero expectations. He might just roll with what he has or just bring in some "fit" guys for depth but no real game changers. Might be an easier road for this staff. Fans and admin would certainly understand. Then imagine the scenario where he brings in a proven guy or two who then proceed to fade down the stretch like Key and Phillips did. What if those guys seem to disappear like JJJ and ON? How do you explain that? Gonna be really interesting to see how Barnes approaches the portal. Even more interesting to see how any newcomer responds to Barnes and how they progress or regress as the season goes along.

To be fair, that's not completely true. For a long time his offense revolved around a ton of mid-long 2p attempts, and in the last couple years the offense has been revamped to take on a more modern, 3p-oriented look. I think two major things have held us back on that front: rim attack and spacing.

You need more than 3p; the most analytics-centric offenses look for 3's and shots at the rim, and we had nobody outside of Mashack and sometimes ZZ that wanted to take the ball all the way to the hoop.

Second, though we took a lot of 3's spacing was often not great, which was largely a personnel issue of having 2 non-shooters on the floor most of the time (Plavsic, Nkamhoua [most of the time not a threat], Aidoo, Awaka).

In this recruiting class I see a kid who loves to get to the rim (Dilione) and a couple bigs that can stretch the floor in Estrella/Cade. Wouldn't be at all surprised if we see a vastly different/adapted offense in the next 2-3 years.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we don't hit the portal hard this year. Too much roster turnover and too much youth. I don't think you can cover this teams issues with 2 portal players.
Would I be happy about it no, but would I be surprised also no.

I mean the roster will be young, but not inexperienced.

Mashack, Aidoo, ZZ all will be Juniors (granted ZZ won't be playing to start the season most likely, but still experienced and helpful in developing younger guys)

Julian, BJ, DJ, Freddie, Awaka all will be in their 2nd year with the team (assuming everyone returns) and despite only Julian/Awaka playing much going through a season is still good experience.

The thing is thus far at least we've not seen great return on investment from the portal especially when bringing in experienced guys (EJ Anosike and Tyreke Key for example). So this could be a completely different off-season for the portal from Barnes & staff, they may actually look to add younger talent with higher ceilings/potential that are looking for a change of scenery because a coach left. Wouldn't surprise me if we see players with 2 or more years left being mentioned more than grad transfer options that only have 1 year left.

It's funny you said that, I was just thinking about some similar stuff.
ZZ wants to be back by the start of the season, I think he will at least push himself to be ready. BTO and others have alluded to Freddie playing point for some of his minutes at least, and we have JM who the staff used as a primary ball handler at times this year. JM will also be your starting 3 probably getting 30 minutes a game. At the 2 you have BJE and Carr who I've read is supposed to be a pretty good shooter. If you take another guard you have BJE 3rd in line at PG and 3 maybe second depending on how you feel about Carr. That really does run the risk of him leaving. At the 3, even if JP doesn't come back if Shak is giving you 30 a game and the staff feels like DJ can give 10, then why take someone there? If JP comes back that's even less minutes. Tobe is our only 4 so I think a 4 is a portal option, but how many guys are going to want to come in and split time? Also at the 5 Aidoo should be the starter there next year, so how many bigger names are going to want to come in and split time? Depending on how the staff feels about certain guys, I think we as fans are going to be disappointed in our portal additions.

I'd only point out one thing, most bigs that play the 4/5 are more than happy to play in that 25-27 mpg space. Tolu Smith, Johni Broome, Noah Clowney, etc. very few are 30+ mpg guys these days and it allows them to take less wear/tear and also play harder knowing they don't have to play a ton of minutes. So losing ON/Uros and those minutes being available I think you'll honestly have less trouble bringing in a big for next year.

Guard though is a different story, you have Mashack who will start and probably be a 30 mpg guy, then Freddie & DJ both are very good prospects and offensive studs outta HS ya gotta think both will have potential to play minutes being through a season already to get prepared. You'll eventually get ZZ back, I think he might be ready to practice by the start of the season but think they'll be cautious with him. BJ also has a year in the system and if he decides to stay he could get the bulk of the reps as the PG and carve out plenty of minutes. If Julian returns he's starting as well. Then you have Carr coming in who could be the best shooter of the entire group if the reports on him are accurate. So to me I think it'll be harder to sell a guard (especially a 2) on coming here and seeing minutes. A true PG I think you can pull him in pretty easily...there's no one on the roster that clearly will be the starter there at this point with ZZ hurt.
