2024 Recruiting Thread

The coach at Webb in bell buckle just got the head coaches job at Montverde Academy ! 🤔
I noticed that as well.

Outside the glaring LSU connection conspiracy, I guess its a way for the coach to work his way up to a job beyond the HS ranks in the near future (provided he does well).

Definitely seeing way more kids move around HS these days

We need to get over us not being in her top 7. She's never been a lady vol fan. You can't cram that don't a player's throat who has no interest. Our fanbase has been obsessed with her. We need to let it go.

It was a simple statement of fact that was highlighted in the article. The only one who felt compelled to provide additional commentary about it was you. Who's obsessed?

These rankings mean nothing. Being a part of any recruit(s) top whatever list means nothing.
Tennessee has gotten commitments from two top 30 HS recruits in the country. Finley Chastain Class of 2027 hasn’t received their rankings yet. Chastain is projected to be in the Top 10.
Rickea Jackson was a top 5 prospect. Jordan Horston was a top 5 prospect. Jillian Hollingshead was a McDonalds All-American and Top 30-40 prospect. Tamari Key, Sara Puckett, and Karoline Striplin were Top 40-50 prospects.
Destinee Wells, Kaiya Wynn, and Jasmine Powell were top 100 prospects.
And last but certainly not least Jewel Spear was ranked #82 in the class of 2020. Jewel Spear is an all ACC player three years in a row, and a two-time team USA selection. She is starting for the second time on team USA.
Tennessee has compiled an elite roster. A statement of fact. Anyone that states otherwise is trying to stir the pot.

I don't think too many fans will argue that the LV's don't have a very talented roster, they do.
But is the irony in WinnerCircle's post lost on everyone ?
He/she declares definitively that the "rankings mean nothing". He/she then gives each player's ranking (even one former LV player's ranking !!) to seemingly bolster his assertion of how talented the UT team is !!
Why mention rankings if they don't mean anything ?

Every player I listed with the exception of Kaiya Wynn who I believe has a lot of potential has started for their former team as a transfer or here at Tennessee likely ahead of players ranked higher than them with the exception of Rickea Jackson, Jillian Hollingshead who is a former McD All-American and Tamari Key.
There aren’t many more talented players in college basketball than Jewel Spear who was ranked #82 and is a two-time team USA selection.
Many times HS players rated in the Top 10 or 20 that haven’t stepped a foot on a college campus receive declarations of greatness and praise from fans.
The point is since Coach Harper era many Tennessee players get overlooked that were nationally ranked and their success translated to college.
That is the point. Rankings mean nothing. We have seen that recently. Striplin, Puckett, Hollingshead, Wells, and Avery Stickland have contributed a lot more than some players that were ranked higher than them coming out of HS. The current HS commitments although some are highly rated they will have to adjust to the college game. Yet, the fact is too much emphasis is on certain players coming out of HS as can’t miss recruits and when those players reach college campuses it doesn’t materialize.

No you weren't the only one. The entire rant reeks of irony/hypocrisy, not only using rankings after arguing they're meaningless, in a RECRUITING thread no less, with no relevance to the 24 recruiting class to which this specific thread is for. Not to mention this diatribe is railing against some imaginary argument NO ONE here was making (as you mentioned, who said they don't have a talented roster...?)

Newbs. (although I suspect this isn't really a newb...)

I think the point was you can have great players who were not highly ranked but, if you put stock in rankings and whine about UT’s recruiting check out who UT has successfully recruited.

rankings matter
coaching up not ranked players matters
coaching up players that were ranked matter

Fulmer used to always boast about his Top 5 classes….in a down year of recruiting he would say something to the effect of we’ve identified who we wanted. His way of saying we didn’t get the ranked kids.

That was the other fallacy of the OP. I guess it's coincidence that the programs who get to the Final Four most consistently are the same programs fighting over the top ranked recruits year after year? Players like... Jaloni Cambridge? Once upon a time Tennessee was in those battles.

I think everyone would agree recruiting rankings are, at best, imperfect. One could even argue they are significantly flawed and overrated. To go as far as to say "rankings mean nothing" is a lazy, absurd take IMO...

It’s just July. Come October and November just wait. A completely different narrative will form. In the meantime I’m enjoying Team USA and supporting the dynamic duo of Rickea Jackson and Jewel Spear. Boy oh boy they are good.
