2024 Recruiting Thread

I don't think too many fans will argue that the LV's don't have a very talented roster, they do.
But is the irony in WinnerCircle's post lost on everyone ?
He/she declares definitively that the "rankings mean nothing". He/she then gives each player's ranking (even one former LV player's ranking !!) to seemingly bolster his assertion of how talented the UT team is !!
Why mention rankings if they don't mean anything ?
Well done analysis! @volnationnj if that were a shot it would be 3 points plus 1.

That was the other fallacy of the OP. I guess it's coincidence that the programs who get to the Final Four most consistently are the same programs fighting over the top ranked recruits year after year? Players like... Jaloni Cambridge? Once upon a time Tennessee was in those battles.

I think everyone would agree recruiting rankings are, at best, imperfect. One could even argue they are significantly flawed and overrated. To go as far as to say "rankings mean nothing" is a lazy, absurd take IMO...

agree. Rankings mean less when you rely on one recruiting service. This board relies heavily on Premier.

Ranking players is a side gig for most rating agencies. They are promoters of tournaments and training events. They get a higher draw and can charge more money when highly ranked players are attending their events. It is in their best interest as a corporation to rank players in their geographic market as high as they can justify.

A composite ranking will give a better view of players standing in a class. But remember all classes are different. A top 10 last year may be a second ten this year.

EDIT: the NCAA says; Here are some of the most respected NCAA basketball recruiting rankings:

I haven't been on here in a little while? How is our recruiting looking?

If Harper is still struggling in this area, I worry about her longevity. It's not her fault the program was in a rut for a decade but we should have a lot to sale with our rich history. You almost have to just really bad at recruiting to not get Top 10 classes here.

Catch us up. Are you a "High School Recruiting is Everything" type guy or do you count portal recruiting as legit as well?

Because they continue to do very well with the portal but lose disappointingly on top 25 high school prospects, sometimes after coming really close.

I think high school recruiting should be the bread and butter of an established program like in football recruiting.

Then you'll think they are seriously lagging in recruiting. They're landing some distant future phenom commits and a few 25-40 rated recruits. But still can't quite close the deal on top 20s.

The good news for some of us is that so far they've been way above average making up for that in the portal. Very successful plugging, and even upgrading. the holes in HS recruiting classes.

Fair points. Just to elaborate I do think the 2024, 2025, and 2027 Tennessee commits all have an opportunity to finish in the Top 10s - 20s. Actually Nyla Brooks debut in the rankings listed her at #24. Kaniya Boyd is #29 and has earned high marks in AAU play. Finley Chastain Class of 2027 has not received their rankings yet but her projection is very promising and it wouldn’t surprise me to see her near the top of the rankings. A 2024 target that had Tennessee in the mix before committing elsewhere dropped from the Top 10s to #26 and is listed as a 5 star prospect. These rankings are very fluid. Some are also unreliable. The future HS players that are committed to Tennessee as of today are in the Top 20s - 30s and potential 5 star prospects.

I agree...Coach and staff have used the portal effectively. They used it to get back to prominence and are now focusing more on signing HS players.

She has covered the last bad high school recruiting year nicely with the portal. 2024 looks like at least a year where we will get three quality high schoolers with one already committed.

totally agree though there are those who do not. KJH is doing a good job and i think she has missed out on some recruits due to whatever reason

i have never thought relying on portal is aq good idea..... once in a while there is gold there rickea e g but not a place to rely on to get consistant top level talent

Once in a While? Since the portal opened up the way it did, there is gold out there year after year. We didn't necessarily get the best of the best this year, but we did get quality pieces. LSU bringing in Morrow and Van Lith is a game changer as well as UCLA snatching up Lauren Betts. Tara messed up there. UCLA won the Lottery with Betts

Don’t let this AmeriCup fool anyone. Jewel Spear and Destinee Wells are as good as anyone signed out of the portal. Spear dropped 30 pts in a head to head game against Van Lith. Destinee Wells has as good a resume as any player in college basketball at the PG position.
Against Stanford this past season Lauren Betts was not even a factor without Tamari Key. Tennessee has absolutely hit homeruns in the portal back to back years.

Did Tara "mess up"? she is a very good coach and judge of talent so when she determined that Lauren was not yet reaady for prime time i tend to side with her
and you are absolutely right there is gold out there just IMHO not as much as in the conventional recruiting...... if ai was forced to build a top tier program solely from the ortal i would be in trouble
Again you are correct that Morrow and Van Lith will be good additions for LSU but world beaters? They did not elevate DePaul and Louisville last year

Of Course, they elevated both of their teams. Morrow was a walking Double-Double (25 & 12) and although their record wasn't over the top, without her they don't win half the games they did win. Same goes for Van Lith. It is what they bring with the players that are already at LSU that makes them extremely dangerous. The same goes for Tennessee. We brought in players (Wells & Spear) that were top 5 scorers in their respective leagues. Their teams weren't put over the top by them alone, but you add them to what we have with Rickea Jackson, Jillian Hollingshed and a Healthy Tamari Key and Tennessee is all of a sudden a top ten possibly top five team with the other moving parts that are already here. And yes, Tara should have played the number 1 ranked, 6 foot 7 high school recruit more than 7-8 minutes per game. Tara went all the way down her bench rather than nurturing the nations top recruit for 2022 and in doing that probably lost her younger sister who is a top 5 recruit in the 2025 class as well. That is a "Mess Up"

LSU basically replaced what they loss with Morris, Williams, and Carson graduating. Those players weren’t big names so while it seems these are upgrades it could actually be them breaking even in terms of production on the court.
Watching team USA is a prime example right now of you don’t win with just big names unless they build chemistry and learn how to play together. Tennessee returns the core of rising juniors with Tamari Key also set to join the team following a year long absence. TN beat the nat’l champs in the SEC tourney.
With Rickea coming back and new additions of Jewel Spear, Destinee Wells, and Avery Strickland the team has enough talent and depth to compete with any team in the country. Chemistry, Development, and Luck( yes every team that ever wins a title needs it) are the factors to coming out on top.
