2024 Recruiting Thread

Man, the "old guard" is like really old now. They already were back in the glory days 20 yrs ago. How much influence could they still have? Hard for me to see Danny White, from what we know of him, bowing to them. And certainly not Kellie Harper and her staff who are getting clobbered in high school recruiting.

Thank God for the portal!
Wolfenbarger is in there and could be an option. She is 6'5" tall likes to play two guard so don't know what she brings. She is a 26 percent three point shooter needs to be playing inside. I wonder if that is why she left Arkansas cause they wanted her to play inside. If she played to her ranking in her class Tennessee would have one of the top classes in the nation with Boyd, and these two transfers and maybe Blakes. At least two of the four is a reality.

So, after tonight’s performance (W or L) do y’all think NIL will be the biggest reason we aren’t getting elite hs recruits?

It never was! 😩🥴😂 Don’t let these people convince you otherwise! It’s been clear the whole time!

Lol 😂

The performances/results on the court over the course of Kellie’s tenure have NOTHING, absolutely nothing to do with it. It’s JUST NIL. And NIL only.

Kellie’s an elite coach who beat the defending champs 💀

Texas and SC will run the SEC, TN better get some portal help or they are in trouble going forwarded.

The portal is all we've got! We should quit recruiting high-schoolers. Think about how much time, effort and money we've wasted chasing prospects who don't sign with us over the last 4+ years. We've got an 8-national title pedigree and yet have signed, what, 3 HS recruits in 4 years--and one of them was mis-evaluated and left after a year. We might as well be efficient and just work the portal.

Sadly, a modified version of this is probably the best course. Like any organization, if one piece is failing repeatedly a major internal review of what's going wrong should be undertaken. If as claimed the failure to launch hs recruiting is all about $$$, then it probably is best to pull back and devote most resources to the portal unless and until that situation improves.

Doesn't mean you don't scout the 12 yr olds, send letters to the tweeners, and even make offers and have one visit by elite high schoolers. But it is probably time to limit endless visits, etc. when it's clear we're going to be outbid on the signing bonus.

The portal might keep us minimally afloat, but it's never going to make us competitive with teams stacking truly elite players in large numbers. Hard to live off their overflow.

Sadly, I agree.

I'm also sad for our staff and program, because I don't know how they could feel anything but used by some of these players who they eventually probably figure out have no real interest in coming to Knoxville, but are more than happy to suck up our recruiting budget dollars while getting treated like royalty on a visit. 😢

I hate the recruiting game these days. Just venting here.

Counterpoint:

When you recruit high schoolers now, you are not merely recruiting them for their signature on signing day. You are also recruiting them for the possibility that they will change their minds in the future and transfer to you. Y'all were number two for Talaysia Cooper out of highschool (and she might have committed to you if not for the pressure of friends and family in her native state). A year of mop up duty made her rethink her decision and go to the school she loved during hs recruiting. She didnt "shop around" in the portal. She pretty much went straight to y'all.

Look at your transfers (I'm too lazy). How many of the had visited with y'all in high school and formed relationships with Kellie?

Lesson Number 2: Coaching staffs need to NOT be butthurt if a recruit chooses elsewhere initially. If a friendship was made during recruiting, keep it, - even if the player initially committed to a rival.

Almost all our transfers loved us before they left us. Always the bridesmaid never the bride. It’s why I said keep the contact and relationship but curtail the fruitless repeat visits. Establish their price early and that seems to be determinative for us.

We are currently being kept afloat as the school of second choice.

100%, You are building relationships and counting on buyers remorse setting it, if a recruit opts to go somewhere else. Folks have not yet seemed to grasp that with the portal recruiting is an extended process that goes beyond that first commit.
