Programs are having to make some decisions with the way the portal now is, as you mention recruiting a guy who’s ranked sub Top 50 to a top program (like Tennessee) requires some “up-frontness” and feeling out. You look at our freshman class and you’ve got 2 Top 50 guys who likely won’t see much court time this year, and then another Top 150 guy who’s a likely redshirt. Last year we had Jefferson a Top 50 player who was willing to redshirt, it’s harder and harder for freshman to see the court early with the portal. Tennessee imo has done a good job staying true to what they want to do, which is developing players and gaining experience, while also utilizing the portal. We aren’t going to rely much on freshman and frankly freshman have struggled more often than not under Barnes, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think it’s why you saw a shift in 2024 targets, the guys we brought in and targeted for fall are all in that 50-100 range, guys that likely know they aren’t going to play much if at all as freshman and that they will need to develop.
Everyone is still learning and figuring things out with the portal era, but a guy like Mashack has stuck around, DJ appears to be doing the same as well, BJ would have stayed here had we had the room at the time, which was a negative of Ledlum’s decision that wasn’t really mentioned. We may shift our recruiting focus, and I’m not saying we will ignore top ranked guys all together, but feels like targeting the guys ranked sub Top 50 and them being willing to take a year or 2 to learn and maybe redshirt, and then hitting the portal to fill a piece or 2 each year is the current strategy. Much like Cade Phillips this year I don’t think fans will even really know or talk or worry much about a guy like Boswell as he redshirts or plays very limited minutes.
