2024 Transfer Portal Thread

There are no tea leaves until this week’s one on ones with RB and players. My perception of who stays/goes is definitely shifting, but it’s guesswork until they have a two-sided talk. We have big upside on the team, but the development time needed is gray. Dillione is such a different/better player than his minutes suggest. He is a very good and versatile defender, and can score from the one spot. He was killing it over the Summer, but was a mess after returning from his foot injury. DJ was playing in preseason, but blew it with grades and attendance. Estrella was playing stretch and shooting threes from the baseline early, but grew hugely over the season as a physical defender and back to the basket guy. His hand speed is slow. His foot work is overwrought. He can be very good. Carr has a big spotlight syndrome and is a guy who gets hot with pressure. That’s exciting. Cade is underrated. Not sure how you keep him engaged unless you can really upgrade his minutes. He’s going to be good. Aidoo is tricky. He was sick this week, but that doesn’t explain the softness with bigger guys. You can’t put that much weight on his frame or suddenly make him a beast. In a traditional 4-5 set, with Awaka, that may relieve pressure and get him more space. That said, other teams will be in his ear, saying we don’t understand him and that he’s being used incorrectly. They may be right. He does care. Seeing him walk of sobbing yesterday lets you know he didn’t want to let the team down. Again, hard to judge what is flu, what is Edey, what is tentativeness. He’s a weird fit, but a loss if he goes. The core is ZZ, Awaka, Mashack, and the other pieces are TBD. Lanier has had more contact than anyone. Hes a plug and play. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes. The next two weeks, they’ll be some moves that will let us know what’s next.
Very nice eval and update.
Any word on Santi's shoulder, I thought his shooting never returned after the early season when he landed on his shoulder and hurt it.

Doesn’t matter who enters the portal if we won’t pay for them. Not every kid will do it the Dalton Knecht way.
Huh? Knecht has multiple NIL deals including Spyre and The Volunteer Club. His valuation was at nearl 800k a couple months ago, if that’s anywhere even close, that’s pretty good NIL money for one year.

I got absolutely roasted for saying the same ani it Aidoo a couple weeks ago. I guess I am just very unlikable because I was torched.
A word got messed up in your post, so I'm not entirely sure what you were saying, but I assume it was in agreement about Aidoo potentially transferring. I mentioned that possibility a couple times throughout the season. It's generally met with skepticism by those who don't want to acknowledge the idea that he talked with other teams, last year, and that the team he is returning to next season lost a lot of talent, experience, and cohesion. There are a handful of reasons for him to look elsewhere, which of course doesn't mean he ultimately will, but discussing its potential isn't exactly without merit.

Which way is that? Knecht had UT’s richest NIL deal.
I think the point he's trying to make is that Knecht wasn't necessarily looking to find the highest bidder for his services. He was looking for the best fit in terms of culture, development, and winning opportunity, knowing that the NIL would perhaps take care of itself, which it ultimately did.

My bad, fixed it. I totally agree. I sad two weeks ago I had a feeling he could transfer, and of all the things I’ve posted here(most of them dumb) that got the most backlash

More than anything, he wanted to develop his skills for the NBA. The biggest knock was his defense and Barnes was the cure. Helped that his favorite player is KD, and Barnes connected them.

Thanks for your updates. I agree with a lot of your assessments. Dilione is a guy who just has to improve in his understanding of team defense concepts. He is a good on-ball defender, but his gambling and hanging teammates out to dry defensively won't be tolerated by Barnes.

Lanier is exciting if his sudden jump in production translates to the SEC. I'm still concerned why it took him so long to become such an impact player at UNF.

I had a feeling Aidoo might not make it another year at Tennessee, even when that belief was considered taboo by most on here. Maybe he stays, maybe he goes, but the idea that there was no chance of him leaving was always pie in the sky from people who didn't want to acknowledge how much contact he had with other schools last year.

All in all, I agree. There is a core of returning guys and then a sizable group of unknowns. The next couple weeks will provide clarity on what our roster looks like next year.
I know you and a couple of others (myself included) have been very vocal about us needing to get backup point guard behind ZZ for the past two off seasons. Well we are now to Ziegler’s senior year and off-season number 3 and we still currently don’t have a set in stone backup point guard. Zeigler almost played 40 minutes in every NCAAT game and we all know that’s not sustainable. If Freddie and Boswell can do it next year then awesome, but man I’m not too confident once Zeigler is gone where we are going with the PG position. I’m not sure if either one of those guys are a true PG like ZZ to take over after he is gone.

Ideally we have a set in stone second option behind ZZ this upcoming year. That way we have someone that can be the starting point guard in 2025-2026.

I think finding a PG in the portal/determining if our current guys can do it is priority number 1 this off-season.

Problem is that guys in the portal are wanting to play now. Boswell is in incoming freshman so he's assuming he'll be next in line. Not sure how you convince a portal PG to come unless you promise him x amount of minutes, but how can you when it's ZZ's team and his senior year? Impossible situation IMO.

He hurt his left (shooting) arm early in the season. I don’t know how much it bothered him going forward, or if it’s fully healed yet. Obviously he lost his shot. I hope he’s fully recovered soon and has a long international career.

That’s a very solid point, it would have to be a young guy in the portal that has 2 or 3 years left. But then to your point, you have Boswell which will hopefully already be that guy

I know Boswell has a lofty rating, but he doesn't look like he's got an elite handle and his shooting isn't earthshaking. Looks more like he's built for defense, but smaller, quicker PGs will likely give him fits. He looks like he'd be a PG for some of those really long Louisville teams that used to make our life miserable back in the day. Maybe it's my natural inclination to compare him to ZZ? Seems more like a 2 guard who's more of a slasher than shooter or PG. Just my uneducated opinion.

Aidoo just seems like he’s plateaued.

Awaka and Estrella both have another level they can climb.

Small amount of film I’ve seen, he looks like a combo guard. I hope we can find another PG in portal. One who is capable of alternating off ball with ZZ. Zeigler looked tired in that game against Purdue. Not ideal playing guys 38-40 minutes game.

Aidoo made a significant jump in his level of play this year. He can get better, but moreso than anything he has to believe in himself when competition level increases. Some guys are born with it. Coaches need to work with him.

Well, I set the danged table for him and not a single thanks for poor ol' cav? Geez. Tough audience.
